He needs his max DL higher, because he said a while back he just needs more overall strength. He needs speed of the floor because it's a better transfer to the first pull of the oly lifts than a slow, grinding, max out deadlift. Really interesting link though Dimsum - I'm reading through it right now, even though I'm not big on the oly lifts. I still love the idea of them, and I think After I work on my squat for a while my next goal will be to start working on them. My previous goal was to bench BW by the time I get back to school - I've still got a week for that, but considering I'm not even feeling stuck at 160 for a set of 5, I'm fairly certain I can 1rm at least 176. I'll work on that some more this week, and Then when I'm back at school, it's time to move on in goals. First thing I want to do is hit a 3-plate set of five for my deadlift. Seeing as I've squatted 225 before, I'd really like to push my deadlift to that barrier where I start thinking "wow, that's a big weight." I'm not sure the best way to do that though. Goal after that will be a 260 lb (1.5xbw) squat, but by that time I'll hopefully weigh more. Maybe that will have to be adjusted, or maybe I just want to get better at squatting in general. I know it's certainly my least favorite lift, and the one I typically spend least time worrying about or improving even though it's so important.

I hung out at 4:32/km for the first 5km, then when I was nice and warm I took off my shirt, engaged boss mode and took it down to 4:28/km. It was amazing to watch everyone else's pace drop off as the race progressed. I would say around 90 per cent of the people around me went out too fast, and some of them started dropping off as early as 12km into the race. I had my GPS watch to keep my pace steady, which was a major boon. I'm sure if I had just matched pace with people around me, I would have gotten too far behind in the first 20km to make it up in the last half of the race. Anyway, 4:28 did me real good for most of the race. I hit some mean high-fives with roadside spectators, including four dudes dressed up as Elvis, and generally felt great until around 32km. I felt pretty good about overtaking some people who had swaggered by earlier in the race. Also, at 30 km my brother and his wife cheered me on with wicked hi-fives and the theme from "Chariots of Fire" blasting from a boombox. I feel privileged to know such awesome peeps. With 10km to go, I felt so good I decided to hit the jets. I went down to 4:12/km and started kicking ass and taking names -- broke away from the group of three other dudes I was running with and just went berserk. I'd get someone ahead of me in my sights, imagine a rubber band between my waist and theirs and just reel them in. It felt pretty good to feel so strong when everyone else seemed to be flagging, but that just makes me think I should have gone faster from the start. In any event, I passed the second-place female runner with about 1500 metres to go. At 800 metres I imagined I was up at the track doing my last Yasso 800 ever and nearly flew across the finish line. Big shoutouts to the TL fitness community for your kind words of encouragement and informative advice. You dudes are ace in my books! Right now, I feel a nice mix of satisfaction and chagrin. Boston in 2012 will be great. And the qualifying time for New York is 2:55.

I'm not quite sure when I want to make a really serious attempt at setting a new PB -- probably next summer, but it depends a bit on what's going on with my life around then. My current job ends in October, but there's another one on the horizon that might keep me in Edmonton until October 2012. If I end up staying I'll probably attempt to qualify for New York at this time next year, but if I move to Vancouver or Toronto or elsewhere things get a little harder to predict, but I know I want to make a damn good effort at breaking three hours at some point in the next few years. We'll see what the future brings. For now, I'm just going to go back to ~ 70 km a week (i.e. have a life outside of running and work) and get back into swimming, which is so good for one's joints.
