Well the way I figured it is I was very curious about barefoot running because I had been experiencing a lot of discomfort in my other running shoes that got so bad I eventually could barely walk in any pair of shoes I put on my feet. But I noticed that whenever I took my shoes off my feet felt fine. This motivated me to at least take a good look at quality running shoes and ultimately led me to barefoot running. As far as I'm concerned they are just as expensive (and often less so) than a high quality running shoe which I was in need of anyway. As far as pure lifting or whatever yeah they are pricey but as I said I do get a lot of functionality out of them since I originally bought them for running and wound up using them for other things as well including lifting.

I had 70kg on the bar, sat back for the first pull, extended my hip for the second pull, and got under the bar as quickly as possible. The bar landed in the perfect position and I front squatted it up. 70kg is of course light weight and I think that if my technique were right I could do at least 90 (at least it feels that way) but that felt awesome. I'm gonna keep inching my way up as my technique allows. One problem I have though ... whenever I jerk a weight, no matter how small, I get a shooting pain in both of my shoulders. Today I tried to jerk 30kg, but it hurt like hell. I'm not all that interested in clean and jerking, but rather cleaning and snatching, but this is strange ... I think my shoulders may be holding my OHP back too considering I find it hard to fully extend my arms.

Not to sound harsh here, but in the past three days I think you might have half the posts put on this thread. Yes, lifting is serious and yes, if you do it wrong it can be bad for you. But at these weights, you are not going to injure yourself, and the best way to learn is by DOING. That said, I'm watching your videos now. Hard to tell exactly with a loose shirt like that, but your lower back arch seems to be failing in the bottom half of your squat. Concentrate on it; squeeze your abs as hard as you can to help you hold it, and continue stretching to get the flexibility. That will come soon enough. Seems to me like your weight might be a little far forward as well; the way you're standing I would say it's at best mid-foot when you start out, and shifts forward as you go down. This will cause your knees to travel forward, and make it harder to stop them from buckling in at higher weights. Knees traveling forward is HUGE when it comes to knee injuries, it's probably how I hurt mine. Sit back into the squat more rather than letting the knees go forward. You're also doing them pretty low-bar. I've always done high bar, which would involve you putting the bar on your traps rather than your shoulders, and keeping the back as a whole more vertical. It requires more flexibility, and you can't use as much weight, but I like them better. This is personal preference of course. As someone else said, grip that bar. You shouldn't have a bent wrist when you're holding, and all your fingers should be on top of the bar, as that makes it easier to ditch if you fail a weight. I also like to pull hard against the bar for the whole motion of the squat, digging it into my own traps. Mostly a mental thing, but I almost feel like I'm "pulling" myself out of the bottom as well as pushing with my legs. All that said, these are common issues, and they're not HUGe problems right now. You know what you need to do. You're going to be fine in learning how to squat if you just get up and start doing it bro. GL HF. @Dimsum: Sick pics. And that's before I take a look at the bar and realize you're cleaning more than what you weigh like it's NBD. Going to squat for the first time in a month tomorrow; my knees seem to have actually reacted positively to deadlifting. I'll keep it light, and worry about my form, but I'm absolutely going to do it.

I'm two weeks into Insanity and it's going great, my cardio is improving lots. But here's the thing: I need to bulk up and build muscle as well. My limbs are incredibly scrawny. I'm lifting free weights every other day. On one hand I want to lose the fat around my body, especially my gut (beer for the looose). On the other hand, I need to gain weight and bulk up my arms/shoulders. I feel like doing all this cardio is kind of counteracting the weight I'm trying to gain. Am I mistaken? But I don't want to stop Insanity because my cardio has been really bad. Before all of this I hadn't done any strenuous exercise for years. Will I be able to fulfill my goal of losing fat yet bulking up if I continue what I am doing? For the record, I am also consuming whey protein and casein every day. I take the protein once after I wake up and once after my workout and I take the casein before I sleep.

Was at the office for 14 hours today, couldn't even go to the gym @ lunch b/c I was making presentation slides for the VP for 5 hours straight. >_< Wasn't going to let that get in my way - got to the gym near midnight anyways. Was pretty gassed but didn't give a shit. M.Press - 105lbs (+5): 5-4-2 Power Clean - 145lbs(+15): 3-3-3-3-3 - I SERIOUSLY need proper shoes for this. Push Press - 125lbs(+?): 2-2 BW Pull up - 4 BW Dips - 2 M.Press - 45lbs: 15 ate a left over sandwich in the car, got home and ate 2 pieces of chicken, now I'm going to drink tons of water, shower, and sleep.

I'll start with the ss format with the exception of sweeping as I have neither the equipment or physical capacity to do so. Also in general would it be good to join a gym. Finally in terms of diet I'm not sure what to do but I'll figure that out after at least a week of doing stuff unless if it is important to do so otherwise. I'd say take out power cleans and replace them with bent rows for the first few times and see how your body reacts and grows. (I'd like to hear others' input on this as well) As for space, I imagine you could move furniture in your room around and make some space? Any room in the garage? Attic? Basement?

But keep in mind that they are very technical and really the only way to learn them properly without a coach involves alot of reading and experimenting with videos (checking your form etc)

For the record, I am also consuming whey protein and casein every day. I take the protein once after I wake up and once after my workout and I take the casein before I sleep. I found myself in a similar situation a few years ago. I can tell you from experience that I wish I had just started with the regular lifting programs outlined in this thread before doing any program like Insanity or in my case, P90X. Losing weight and fat was not a problem for me and I did wind up losing 30 pounds in 2 months. The only problem was that I kept losing it and was definitely not making the muscle gains I needed to by just doing body weight exercises. I finished the program just to say I got through it but although I had significantly less body fat I'd say I was disappointed by the overall results in terns of strength gain. To put it this way; yes, I had muscle definition and was technically what you might call "ripped" but what was the point if I had so little muscle anyway? I just wound up looking awkward skinny, so I decided to lift because there is really no substitute for heavy resistance training. Short answer is no, you will probably never see the muscle gains and weight gains from a program like Insanity. Not to demotivate you or anything and if you feel you are getting the fat loss you want through the program then great. But from my experience if your overall goal is to develop muscle while burning fat programs such as that are somewhat inefficient. In fact, it's very hard to do both things at the same time regardless of the program. If you do stick with the program and eat well you will probably come to realize (like I did) that cutting fat is actually not as hard as you may have at first thought, but bulking up with muscle is harder and takes more time. So if you aren't overly concerned with body fat for now then look into lifting for a few months before doing a shredding program like Insanity.

I completely agree with you about the fact that bulking + cutting at the same time is inefficient but it is possible. You just need great recovery and loads of clean, nutritious food. Also "lean" bulking is often the best way to look more muscular and less fat since you will just fill out better and not look fat while staying at the relative same bf%. also: tl h&f > studying...

Don't worry if you can't do a proper squat without a barbel or with only the barbel. I find it way easier to squat when I have some weight on my back. Awesome pics dimsum :D
