Do you love old school RPG's? Classic RPG boss battles? Do you miss games that offer a challenge and require actual learning and strategy? Well if you're feeling nostalgic, I'd like to take a moment of your time to inform you about my new game, A House of Champions.

Why TeamLiquid?
I chose to sponsor a thread here on TL because I know and love TL. It's my home. I feel that you guys (and girl(s)) are the exact type of people who will enjoy this game. It's a real challenge to finish the game undefeated, yet it can also be beaten by almost anyone, as your characters grow stronger even in defeat. I think TL's users will really enjoy the nostalgic design, and I'd imagine a few of you will have the perseverance to go undefeated and get featured on the A House of Champions website.
Congrats to So no fek from TL, becoming the first undefeated champion!

This demo allows you to combat the first two Champions. Keep in mind that the first one isn't particularly difficult, but it should give you a great introduction to the flow of the game. Unfortunately, save files will not transfer from the demo version to the full version.
FAQ
Q: How much is it? A: $7.49 USD.
Q: How many hours of gameplay? A: ~12-18 hours for the first playthrough for all my testers, and I've gotten reports from players of anywhere between ~7-15 hours since release. It takes longer if you're attempting to go undefeated, and much longer if you plan on attempting to go undefeated without reloading saves. I can personally go undefeated in about 6-7 hours since I know all of the tricks and can skip the dialogue.
Q: I like the art/music/design! How'd you make it? A: It was developed using a version of Enterbrain's licensed RPG engine that was modded to fit the needs of the design. I coded these modificaitons, scripted, designed, and wrote the game myself. The music is done by Kevin Macleod (and trust me, you'll love it). Large portions of the art and sound are used via royalty free license from several sources and not produced by myself, the rest of the art (including production art) was done by myself.
Q: You used royalty free art and a licensed game engine, lame? A: I chose to go this route primarily because the engine and graphic assets fit the game very well. I opted to focus primarily on the gameplay, writing, and design, in order to deliver the funnest experience possible. This doesn't mean it's untouched, it's actually modded quite extensively. I apologize if you dislike this, but if you're disinterested in purchasing, simply do not purchase.
Q: I enjoyed this game, how can I help? A: Spread the word! Tell your friends, tell your friends to tell their friends as well. Rate it or write a review on GamersGate, tweet about it, share it or like it on Facebook! Link it on other forums, hell even making a recommendation here in this thread would help a lot.
Q: I hate it, now what? A: Sorry, I can't offer refunds or anything, but if you contact me personally perhaps there's something we can work out if you can't get it to function or something. I think there's enough information available for you to make an informed decision previous to purchasing.
Q: Why Should I Buy? A: Support indie development! It's inexpensive! No DRM! It's fun! Support a fellow TL member! (3k+ Posts, staff writer).

I really like the music is there any way i can it without getting the game?

Hm
Was this made with RPG Maker? Also, not all art assets were created for this game, meeaning that alot of those portraits are sourced from somewhere else. Care to explain before I decide to purchase?

I'm kind of like in a retro gaming phase so this look really interesting ! I'll try the demo and see if I like it enough to buy it. I hope its really is as challenging as you say tho :D !
EDIT: A few question: Is it possible to play in fullscreen mode ? Also, can I change the control to play with a controler or remap the keyboard key ? (like an xbox360 controler)

Looks cool OP but sad that there is a lot of those royalty free art stuff though.

You can press F1 in game to change keys directly, and use alt+enter to toggle to fullscreen mode. It -should- fullscreen by default though.
Also, it's quite challenging to go undefeated, especially your first run through. Keep in mind that the first boss is a bit easier than the others, though.

That's good to know. =) To be honest, I was quite worried the demo would turn people off... The tutorialish battle and the first boss are a bit less exciting/challenging than the rest!

Cool, I might check this out once exams are over

wow very nice .. thanks for posting

Very nice post, I will look into it. Just a suggestion: a poll that rates the game from 1-5 (or 1-10, or whatever) may be a nice asset, in addition testimonials/reviews as they come could be included.

I do work in teams quite often, I'm actually spending this entire weekend working with members of my new design studio. =) I simply didn't for this particular project, as it started as my 'pet' project which quickly got out of hand and ended up being pretty beastly, haha.

Added testimonials. =) Thanks for the idea.

this remidns me of final fantasy legends 1-3 ! man did i love that game on the gameboy back then

Looks pretty cool, so I picked it up. I'm a big fan of old school games that put a emphasis on gameplay, so hopefully I won't be disappointed. I don't think I will be, but if it lets me waste a couple of hours and supports a TL member, can't say I'll regret my purchase.

anyone have a torrent for this? i cant afford the game.

Does this really cost money? It's an RPGMaker game with 20 fights and nothing else.
|
Sorry if you're not interested, STALLONEZONE, but I feel that the OP clearly addresses what you're saying here.
edit: And as a side note, Enterbrain's RPG engines are just as powerful, flexible, and customizable as many games engines out there. They just happen to be mass-marketed under the 'rpg maker' moniker because they're quite easy to use at their core.

It's a bit much when the majority of mobile games with far more professional development cost less than something you made in RPGMaker. Especially when your RPGMaker game doesn't even stand up to every other free RPGMaker game out there. Apparently the dude doesn't understand that his pricing model is totally screwed, because he just tried to shrug it off, so I figured I should maybe break down his pricing model to a simpler example he might be able to internalize.
Considering he probably wants to make the money back he spent on this sponsored thread he should probably drop the price.
EDIT: I can play SC2 custom maps with higher production values than this 8 dollar flash game.

where's this derailing exactly i'm giving him advice about the pricing model of his game based on the context of the current market what else could possibly be more on topic
i mean, i can't exactly give him advice on his game considering the only playable element I can review is a tutorial

This is pretty cool. I'm at the statue guy right now and my perfectionism is preventing me from continuing with a loss so I keep restarting my save to try different things. ><; Spent a bit on it & will continue to play later. Thanks!

Hum, I used to make these when I was 11 :3 Won't be buying this, but still it's nice if you can get some good money out of it even if I think that this kind of games should be just released for free since the community had always done that
|
Added a few testimonials, as I've been getting a lot of positive feedback!
Also, if anyone is having issues with the game not automatically fullscreening, use alt+enter to toggle it. I apologize for this, but it seems some computers just aren't automatically resizing to fullscreen properly.
Lastly, I've gotten word that someone is currently 15-0, so we may have our first confirmed undefeated player within a day or so. =)

I just played through the demo and really enjoyed the experience! I accidentally selected "tap out" once on the 2nd challenger. WHOOPS! Then I had all this experience and time to gear up my defensive mate. I'm sure the 2nd boss would have been more difficult without me having the time to buff up everything.
Anyways, I dig the game and the concept. I liked having to think about which abilities to use when and it had excellent gameplay. Everything interacts the way I would expect it would. I'll be purchasing the game soon.
Constructive criticism: some more varied sound effects during battle would be nice? Like just a couple more hit sounds for a little more variety. Not a big fault. Also, I could not find out how to "backspace" a character in the naming fields. For instance, I accidentally typed in "Derekk" instead of "Derek" and could not find a way to remove the extra 'k'. If it already is implemented, I would suggest making it more user friendly to find out. If not - then I suggest it to be added.
Overall though, very happy with the game and as a programmer and developer myself, I will support you on this.
P.S. I remember you from the TSB TL league a while back
|
Thanks for your input EscPlan9!
'x' or 'esc' should remove a character. You're correct though, the first time in this can easily be overlooked.
P.S. You are a Tecmo Super Bowl machine. lol

Hey, any plans on releasing this on steam? I'm interested in this but it's easier for me to have most of my games on a single platform. Looks interesting though, and I'll probably pick it up either way.

It will not be released on Steam. It's kind of a small-scale deal and Gamersgate and Impulse suit it a bit better. The Gamersgate version is standalone, so you can add it as a 'non-steam' game into your games list, I believe? Thanks for your interest. =)

It seems very interesting. I haven't been able to try this out yet on the demo but looking at the video it makes me feel a lot of nostalgia. Are you planning to support smartphones in the future?

Due to the inflexibility of the game engine in supporting other platforms, and relatively small scale of this project, supporting additional platforms is unfortunately a bit too problematic to be worthwhile. Sorry!
|
Okay! I am trying the demo, seems a nice game!
|
I've been trying the demo for about 40 minutes now. It looks intuitive, although from a user perspective there's a few basic things that I miss or would advise to look into changing with a future update :
1. Combat feels a little slow early in the game. I PM'd you about this. Not too hard of a system to play though, pretty nice.
2. It would be highly usefull to give a short introduction to the keys used by the program beforehand, like a confirmation dialog.
3. My biggest complaint is a lack of check on the tapping out feature in the demo. I've been tapped out three times due to it now, which counts to your win/loss ratio. A confirmation box would fix this problem
From what I've seen, if 2 and 3 are considered to be pushed at a later date then this is definatly a game to buy if you like to experience the oldschool game-style!
|
IMO the tap out feature shouldn't be there. Wouldn't it just kill the challenge of the game because you can just tap out at the beginning of each fight and get xp? I haven't tried this myself, but when I got xp for tapping out when I knew I couldn't win, it made me think of that.
|
You only get the experience once. Any further tap-outs won't grant experience from what I've seen.
Edit: If you win you do get the exp tho
|
I finished the demo and it's damn bloody addicting! Sure it has rough edges, but this is quality! I really like the game so when I am able to put the cash aside, count me in!
|

Yeah this was actually a difficult design decision. Later on it's especially annoying if you get in an unwinnable situation and have to just watch yourself die. It -needed- the tapout feature for this reason... Imagine not being able to 'gg' out of SC games until all your buildings were destroyed, it's the same deal. Originally, tapping out didn't give experience, but that ended up being poor since you were punished for quitting even when the battle was already 'lost'.
The eventual model, if I recall, gives you diminishing experience rewards based upon how many times you have tapped out. Yes you can continually tap out, but it kills your record and you can only do it 2-3 times before the experience rewards are slim.
Thanks again!

Purchased and enjoying it!
Keep the good work comin'!

Now that I've purchased the full version and played it a bit more:
* I agree with others suggestions there should be a confirmation dialog for the "Tap Out" to avoid accidentally quitting the battle. It should still be kept in, just improved upon.
* I would like a way to clean out the clutter with the obsoleted equipment. Perhaps instead of "taking" the new equipment, it should be Upgrade or Exchange to replace the current gear. Is there any reason it isn't implemented this way? I didn't see a way to change equipment mid battle or any other useful reason to keep the obsoleted ones.
* For more variety and additional replay value, there should be a somewhat significant differentiation between the blue or red corner. Again, if there already is one implemented, there is no information on it to suggest so. If none will be implemented, the choice should be removed from the game IMO since it serves no purpose.
A couple questions:
1) When you select defense, how many turns do the stat increases last for? The next turn until you're attacked? At the conclusion of the next turn? Or 2, 3, etc turns?
2) What effect does being "scared" have? When the 2nd boss howled my characters would sometimes get scared. I didn't notice any effects?
Both those could be cleared up by better in-game indications. I really like how you show the current buffs during each turn. I think it could be a little more information in some areas like mentioned above though.
Again, this is all just constructive feedback to improving the game. Still love the challenge of the game! I'm definitely going to be finishing it! Only past the first 3 bosses now so it'll be a while.

1. I'm pretty sure that you only get stat restorations in the turn that you defend.
2. Being terrified drastically decreases your damage, I noticed. When I was terrified I'd do around 9 damage or so, as opposed to the normal 60-ish.
|
I guess I never noticed the difference since I happened to be defending a lot at the same time.
Am I missing something, or is there no way to improve the newcomers in your party when they just get introduced? Having the 4th party member join but being completely useless other than a punching bag was pretty lame.
Dunno if we should also discuss strategies in this thread. Don't want to derail it too much. I'll just spoiler the next part.
+ Show Spoiler + After fighting the 5th boss, the stone boss, I have no idea how someone would go undefeated in the run. I tried, but after 30 minutes and not bringing him down to even 50% I just gave up (I also was out of items and had little MP/power left). That or I suspect I don't fully understand the mechanics of that fight. I hope it isn't a fight meant to last > 45 minutes! Anyone who found a good tactic without requiring any retries, I'm interested in hearing it. PM me or spoiler it here. Thanksssss!
|
EscPlan9, the newcomer thing is certainly something I'll think about looking into. It'll require a bit of balance changes though.
And as far as the 5th boss goes... It's certainly possible on the first run. =) Discussing the game itself is fine here, just spoiler anything that's... A strategy or other spoiler, obviously.

Down to the final 3 now, undefeated. It's a lot of fun. Haven't had too much trouble yet, though Alycia just kicked my ass (only the second time I've had to bail out of a fight and reload - the other was the first time I fought Envictus and blew through all my SP/items right away.)
+ Show Spoiler [some tips/general suggestions] + From my experience, being terrified noticeably lowers the damage you deal. May also increase damage taken, but I don't know.
I don't really remember the Stone boss fight that well, but I do think you had to chip away at him. I don't remember having too much of a problem with him though.
+ Show Spoiler [other boss related spoilers] + I think the string of bosses in the 4-6 range are way too easy. Hammer seemed like it would be a somewhat challenging fight, as I expected I'd have to go through 3-4 rounds of him being vulnerable. Had him down to about 75% with a good amount of mana left, and he just up and died on me. Alexi was just a complete cakewalk given the proper armor. Alexandra wasn't hard, but certainly annoying with the constant freezing. Still, I was never really in danger, even with 3 of my party members frozen.
I really liked the three fights before and after Envictus; most of them had something really cool going for them. Znu was probably my favorite; wasn't really hard, but it was nice to deal with a constant stream of damage and having some options in how you wanted to go about it.
Is there any difference between the fight if you steal away the blue corner?

Played through the demo and loved it. I like the feeling of the boss battles even in the demo. Glad to support indie games like this!

+ Show Spoiler [Stone Boss] +There's a specific ability one of your characters gets at level 6 that does a massive amount of damage to him in particular. The damage is high enough where it's worth holding off attacking except to use it on him in the way one of the NPCs tells you to.
|
Very nice So no fek, glad you're enjoying it. Sounds like you're kicking some ass, haha. I'm noting your points on difficulty. No word on the guy who notified me of being close to finishing his run earlier today, so perhaps you'll end up being first. =P As I've heard from many people who have played, and people who have tested, you seem to be doing excessively well. You must be taking great care to pay good attention to the dialogues! (As was definitely intended.) =)
A lot of times the difficulty came down to mathematically calculating randomness. For example: + Show Spoiler +The Alexandra fight can be REALLY hard if she keeps freezing your healer/debuffremoval ability, as can alexi if he gets some good ability rolls. Alexi also seems a bit easier since he's a pretty 'quick' kill in comparison to the rest of them. I attempted to remove a lot of randomness whenever it affected this greatly, and even did so in that fight, however. In many cases, the difficulty was scaled back slightly whenever randomness occurred.
I also wanted to make sure that if someone wanted to go 'pure' undefeated, without reloading saves, that it would be possible, yet still very challenging.
Thanks for all your feedback (and everyone else too!).
I think you'll have a pretty tough time against the final 3, they're a bit of an endurance race, haha. =) I personally struggle the most with #2, but everyone else who has played claims to struggle with the final one more.

Going to be busy for the next couple of hours, but hopefully I'll be able to finish it tonight. Even better if I end up being the first to do so!
For anyone having problems, as Mikilatov said, definitely pay attention to what the other NPCs say. There's a lot of valuable advice in it.
+ Show Spoiler +#3 was easy the second time around. I used a lot of SP in her first phase, which turned out not to be the smartest thing. After that, it became a pretty easy fight. Just pure attack for the first phase, attack/heal in the hard phase, and cool off/light attack in the easy phase.

Sorry to say this game doesn't look very creative.
You just used RPG Maker VX and mostly RTP images (images that come with the program when you download them) as well as very little original scripting. For example, you use a completely unmodified menu and the battle system is completely stock.
I'm not trying to be a snob about it but i've been around the RPG maker community and i've seen some truly awesome games come out of it (Final Fantasy Endless Nova) but this one just seems like many uninspired games that people crank out by the boatload.
I'm not disrespecting the hard work you put into making this though! I've made my own game before and it takes hundreds of hours... I wish i could get someone to pay for one of my games!
|
So no fek, + Show Spoiler +Yeah, she's a bit easier once you realize you've just gotta use your resting periods well and burst out of them.
42x10, sorry you feel that way, but the OP is quite conclusive in what this game is. Many have purchased it and I've gotten a ton of positive feedback, and no negative feedback beyond minor suggestions from any of them. If you're not interested, just don't purchase it. PM me if you'd like to discuss it further, please!

Just beat it, and really enjoyed my adventure. Definitely a solid bit of pure gameplay. I don't think there was a boss I didn't like, though some are certainly more fleshed out than others. Would highly recommend this game to anyone considering it; you'll wont find many better deals for the $7.50 - works out to less than a $1 an hour if you play all the way through.
+ Show Spoiler [Addressing an earlier point] +The Alexandra fight can be REALLY hard if she keeps freezing your healer/debuffremoval ability, I actually had this happen a few times, but it wasn't that big of a deal. She was never really a one-shot like danger to a particular character, and was more about chipping away all characters at the same time. I basically just saved the all purpose ailment cure and freezing cure items until my healer was frozen, then used them. There was a time or two when I'd use it, and he'd just be frozen again. But as I said, it wasn't the biggest deal as long as I was able to get a heal off every now and then, and just bandage/first aid kit a character if really necessary. + Show Spoiler +Damn, those last two bosses were great. Seriously, easily the best two in the game mechanic-wise. + Show Spoiler [more detailed on bosses 1/2] +I thought Natalie was going to be tough with her 3 hit normal attack and occasional instant kill. But after I got the hang of remembering to use the Soul catcher, I don't think there's a way to lose. I also managed to dodge the instant kill more than once, so that didn't hurt. But I basically kept putting the Guardian in harms way so he could die and I could revive him with full health/mana. That's seriously an OP item right there. Still, even though I didn't really feel any sense of danger after I saw all her abilities, I really enjoyed the fight.
Number one on the other hand, was actually a really fun challenge. I wasted a bit of mana at the start, before I caught on that he goes through stages. After that it was pretty easy. Was also nice having health/mana reset for the second phase.
Man, fuck Massacre. I went from 50-0% without Agility. I had decided that I'd save my souls for Defense, so that left my less potent traditional item for everyone else; I'm thinking I used one of each in the first phase. So by the time I got there, bringing everyone up after Massacre and hoping they didn't get one shot if I didn't have the mana to heal.
Came down to the wire. I had run entirely out of HP/SP/revive items by just after the last Massacre. Basically was a whole lot of All defend/Lifefall/Light's Wrath/repeat. With the occasional larger heal on Defense. Power died at around 5%, and I celebrated almost a bit too prematurely; I had done a round of attacks and the bar looked entirely depleted but it wasn't a kill. I had about 600 HP on both Strength/Defense at this point and not enough to cast much on either. Luckily I was able to defend a round an end it with a elemental attack/Light's Wrath overkill.
Was a really rewarding fight to win .

I wanted to nab the demo after reading the OP but the site is down Must read better...demo isn't on the site....but the site is still down.

Is that what these types of games are called? I always just called them "Old NES FF type games". Looks good though, might have to check it out.
|
downloaded the Demo, immidiatley felt like 15 years back playing Final Fantasy 6 on a SNES and the likes. Bought it, downloading atm. More then worth the 5€, espicially supporting Indie devs.
|
is there any possibility for this to come out on some sort of hand-held device or the iphone? i dont think i would beat it so im not sure whether i should buy it or not...
|
Well sir ! I will support you indeed ! If you ever need some 3D work for your future project do look me up. I might just stream this to get the word out for you !

See response in page 2. Quick answer: very unlikely.

Congratulations So no fek! You're the first undefeated player, beating out someone else (I don't think a TL user) by 3 hours and 28 minutes, haha. Good work. Glad you liked the last two a bunch.
I'll be updating the undefeated page very soon. Updated the page, also updated the OP with more testimonials and a congrats to So no fek. =)

Sorry about this. The site has recieved a bit more traffic than expected and keeps blipping out for 3-30 minutes at a time. If it's ever out, it should come back shortly.

played about two hours now, still loving it. Also like the way H to the otbid handled those guys just churning out hate. I payed 5€ for a game that will entertain me for 10 hours+, if you compare that with lets say 60 Euros for all those Assembly Line produced games like CoD or MoH that have a 5 hours single player campaign, i got more than my moneys worth. Heck, going to the movies costs me 15€.
Anyway, love the game, and getting tired of all the haters. If you dont like it, dont buy it, and dont go on my/our nerves with repeated posts why you think 5€ is too much....
good work

Just beat the game undefeated - was really fun, overall a bit on the easy side though. Took me ~7hours, but I beat almost all the bosses on my first try.
Definitely worth the money if you enjoy turn-based boss battles.

A couple of you guys are awfully speedy, haha. My testers took much longer on average and tended to struggle with ~half of the bosses. I'm glad you still enjoyed it!

the fight with hammer was awesome up untill + Show Spoiler +he randomly one hit ko'd himself

A few of the bosses towards the start seemed difficult, but afterwards has been pretty easy. It may just be because I've gotten better at the mechanics in the game and adjusting in battle. Also, since I am not going for an undefeated run from the start, I've been able to buff up my characters a few times when I messed up the fight.
As long as you talk to all the NPCs you won't have much trouble finding out the general strategy to use. Finding the specific ability(s) to use at the right time can require some trial and error though.
I'm down to the final two now!

Yeah, really chuckled a bit at that joke. Also Miki's Cloak is so amazingly overpowered. <3

Heh, yeah, I've heard this from 2 people now, and here's my thoughts.
+ Show Spoiler [On Hammer and Difficulty] +The original design required you to kill him, but recieved a bit of "well, once you know what you're doing it just feels REALLY long" from testers, and I agreed. So I actually INCREASED his abilities a bunch and turned it into a bit of a survival thing. The other issue was that previous to changing it, he seemed very plain in comparison to other bosses. While I wanted a couple of the bosses to feel very 'standard', Hammer wasn't one of them.
Regardless of all this it seems you guys are weathering his storm a bit easier than expected. I think the skill levels of my playtesters was simply lacking. During testing, the best performing tester had to replay 10 of the bosses, many of those multiple times, to get through it undefeated.
Despite this, I hope you guys are still feeling relatively challenged, and are enjoying the fights still.

I finished my first playthrough of the game. I never go for 100% completion on first try, so it wasn't the undefeated run. I'll give that a shot at a later time. Anyways, took me just under 9 hours (with about 5 dies/retries) to complete it according to the playtime.
Thoughts... + Show Spoiler + With the last 10 bosses I was losing interest. I only had to retry once in those last 10-12 when I realized I REALLY needed to wear some Ice elemental gear. Otherwise I pretty much just stuck with gear that benefitted each members stats the best.
I think part of the problem was with the combat system as is, there is limited options you can do to increase the challenges of the game. For additional challenges and complexity, there would need to be a revamped combat system. If it is going to stick as a turn-based menu-style combat like this, there could be more options to choose from during battle to allow for greater variety. Otherwise, a real-time, or semi-real-time battle system revamp would make it much more interesting (though require a LOT more time, and dunno how expansive the RPG designer is).
I also think instead of NPCs simply telling you the tactic to use, it could require solving a puzzle-type-quest thingy. It would make the game a little less tedious and offer some additional mental challenges. As is, after every battle, you walk around and talk to everyone, check for new gear, take out whatever is new, restock on items, "spend" xp to level your characters, and then just fight again.
When you lose a battle, I think you gain too much XP from it. It really lowers the difficulty of the game. I had my healer up to level 15 very early on in the game because of XP gained from a few early deaths. I figured levelling up my healer would allow me more survivability while I hone in on the mechanics for the new fights. It worked out even better than I could imagine!
Sorry if this seems entirely negative. Take it as constructive feedback if you decide to update the game, or for future releases? If you update it, let us know and I would be happy to try it out.
Thanks for sharing the game!

I managed to put this together... It's nothing too expansive. =)
Patch 1.03 http://www.mediafire.com/?62xfrfxd143l6md
+ Show Spoiler [Patch Notes] +-Added a prompt at the start of a new game which informs the player of the game's controls. -Slight difficulty tweaks for most Champions. (Nothing major.) -A couple (very minor) bugfixes.
Unzip, grab the files and paste them over the installation. Your saved games should be fine, but it wouldn't hurt to back up the original files.
If someone's feeling up to a task, going through all 20 undefeated, and taking detailed notes (specifically on difficulty, while levelling characters equally) would be helpful for future patches.
I feel that the game is great how it is, but as us SC fans know, balance can almost always be improved upon. =)
EscPlan9!
+ Show Spoiler +With testing, we quickly found that the game was MORE difficult if you tried to stack one character, but considering you weren't going undefeated, perhaps you hit some sort of sweet spot with your strategy. Although others have been mentioning the difficulty thing, I feel that your beginning game losses probably compounded into creating your pretty good run towards the end.
I've been taking notes. =)
Thanks everyone.

Hey, i haven't tried your game (yet) but i suggest you talk about it to people on The Escapist because they are organizing some awards kind of focusing on indie games.
|
Thanks skindzer, but I don't plan to submit this to any competitions, as it doesn't quite fit the bill for such things.
On that note, I'm working on the follow-up to my IGF honored game/experiment, which should certainly attract some attention in such competitions. =)
|
I'll try to say it in a supportive way : I would really be interested even there was a stronger emphasis on the story. I do like the idea of a difficult game, but when i play rpg, the story matter a lot to me.
Maybe the next one will be more to my tastes, i'd love to help a fellow TLer while playing RPG between GSL/TSL matchs
|
Hehe, that's funny that you mention that Fushin, because I actually am the same way. =) In fact, almost all my projects are heavily narrative focused (although not RPG's), but I wanted to take a break from that and focus on pure gameplay for this. While it's not focused on narrative directly, I was very careful about constructing the characters themselves.
The goal with the characters was to actually NOT have them talk much, but to have them take archetypal roles that players would immediately relate to. They're inevitably one-dimensional and predictable but that's what's so memorable about them in the context of the game (at least I hope). This game would be hindered rather than helped by a deep story, I feel. The character's entire personality is generally wrapped up into one defining word. + Show Spoiler +Lisa(Blue), Alexi(Honor), Envictus(Faith), Nafarious(Friendly), Arcturus(Troubled), Vandorian(Insane), etc. etc. You probably won't get this if you haven't played the game, but I'm sure if I asked someone who played this today, in 5 years, what 'Lisa, the Blue Girl' has to say about something, or what 'Alexi, of the Royal Flight' would say about something, they'd be able to tell me. + Show Spoiler [Answer] +"blah blah blah, something about blue," and "blah blah blah something about royalty/honor/hisfather." I like to compare it to the 'Punch-Out' games, where all these characters say like 2 lines of dialogue total, yet are very memorable and defined in people's minds. I feel like I know everything there is to know about a character like 'Glass Joe', yet I have only read like 4 lines of dialogue from him in total.
That was lengthier than I wanted it to be, I hope someone finds it interesting. =P

Any plans to distribute this over Steam?

On April 13 2011 23:35 shinigami wrote: Any plans to distribute this over Steam?
This was mentioned back on page 2, but sorry it will not be released on Steam. Gamersgate and Impulse fit it better, since it's a bit small scale. The Gamersgate version is standalone, so you can add it as a 'non-steam' game into steam games list if you'd like.
|
Thanks, that definitely helps because I really dislike Impulse.

Is it a bug that Malvo doesn't have a hp bar?
I don't know if i am fighting him right now without it
|
There's a few bosses where there either is no HP bar for the entire battle, or just for certain phase(s) of it. Was Malvo the illusionist one? Talk with the NPCs and you'll be able to figure out which one you're fighting. I'm sure not having an HP bar there was intended - you need to know which ones are "adds" and which one is the boss himself. It would be too easy if the HP bar was shown and went down when you hit the right one. (Correct me if I'm wrong Mikilatov)
They still will die after some time - just you don't get privy to that information.
|
=) It's not a bug. A couple bosses don't have it for one reason or another. Malvo's being because, well, he's a sneaky bastard.
+ Show Spoiler [Malvo Tip] +If you still can't seem to beat him, try to pay close attention to his debuff status manually (since you don't get the luxury of seeing his hp bar / debuffs), and try to keep 'ATK Down' on him.

bought and undefeated now rawr ~ ty for making this <3 oldschool rpgs
|
Ok, Thanks EscPlan9 and Miki
I just have to try harder then, i thought i was doing it wrong because of it (silly me).
|
After trying the demo this was bought quickly, love the concept. It reminds me a lot more of SMT games than other turn based RPGs though as there is a tactic other than "overlevel and destroy the boss in one round" needed .
|
Just bought this and really enjoying it However sometimes it will launch into full screen (even though i have the option unchecked) at random, is there a workaround for this or am i just being an idiot? In windows 7 64-bit if it matters
Thanks again for a really fun game :D
|
Panictek, try using alt+enter! That should toggle fullscreen on and off for you.
|
Hey everyone, this is gonna get closed up soon.
Thanks to everyone who supported this, and if anyone needs to get in contact with me for anything related (or I guess unrelated) to the game, feel free to PM me.
I've yet to have anyone who purchased it tell me they didn't like it, and I've gotten TONS of emails/posts/pms from people telling me they loved it, so I'd say it was an overall success!
It'll still be up on Gamersgate and Impulse for quite some time, so tell your friends about it, and if you're happening to stumble upon this after it gets closed, you should still go check it out. =)
Thanks again! <3 -Miki
