I think all media should have subs by default.

So my coworker just told me that he's never seen any Star Trek other than the new movies. And that he considers himself a sci-fi nerd and doesn't feel the need to watch them.
I'M A BIT MAD RIGHT NOW.

I'M A BIT MAD RIGHT NOW. I'm triggered just reading that. It's time for you to dust off your old hatchet and go to town.
Has he at least read Asimov's work? Maybe he can claim Star Trek isn't good enough sci-fi!

BBC's Sherlock takes some serious immersion to finally catch everything for me.
Also I tried starting one of the Star Trek series since it was on Prime and couldn't get through the first episode It was the one where they meet the mysterious Qi who manifests himself as a pompous judge. I couldn't do it, I'm sorry

I have a number of friends who struggled with a lot of BBC shows circa 2005. Rose's accent from Dr. Who was indecipherable to them, and I can see why. A lot of the consonant sounds are either completely different or skipped entirely, and combined with vowel sounds that are also often completely different you end up with something incomprehensible to people who are diving in headfirst.
I can imagine some US accents being similar.

TNG's first season was, like many first seasons, really rough. I think if I was introducing someone to it today I'd start with something later.
Original though, should be seen end to end in all its glory.

John de lancie is a goddamn national treasure. Watch basically any other episode with him in it. Him and Patrick Stuart have great onscreen chemistry. They tried to recapture it with Janeway in voyager but it wasn't even remotely the same. (That first season IS really rough though.)
I can't bring myself to watch tos episodes. They truly make me cringe. I understand it was a different time, and it was groundbreaking and whatnot but just... Ugh It's like comparing batman: TAS to 60s batman.

Both Batmans are excellent for entirely different reasons.

Q ep is pretty rough. You only really need to know that encounter later on in the show iirc. Can just try out watching from season 2 or when Rider gets his beard. Can't remember if that's S2 or not.

'so bad it's good' isn't a reason. It's same reason I can't enjoy stuff like 'the room' that everyone gushes over.
I just don't find that stuff enjoyable.

I definitely needed subs for parts of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell

Freak I got the name wrong. I knew it sounded wrong as I was typing but couldn't figure out why. You taking about TOS not TNG though? Was Q also the first ep of TOS?

I will also say something else about major Sci fi franchises.
I think star wars is extremely overhyped and overcelebrated. This may seem kind of obvious given the more recent sequels/prequels but I include the original trilogy.
I DO, however really appreciate and enjoy what Lucas was attempting to do in having us begin viewing in the middle of a 'serialized adventure.' very cool concept and great vision on his part for doing so. I think a lot of the vision was lost when the ideas had to be fleshed out and that's why we have most of the garbage pile that the series is today.
I will also say what the various (non-canon now, apparently) extended universe authors did with the series is remarkable. Never read many of them but I admit to wasting a lot of hours on wookiepedia on more than one occasion.

I also consider myself a scifi nerd and have only a brief passing relationship with startrek. it just seems weak in general to me. the best startrek film is galaxy quest and the newest one literally concluded with surfing on waves of baddies that were exploding to the beasty boys.

I can understand English mostly fine but the day I cave in and watch The Wire, subs are certainly going to be on.
Never saw any ST that I remember. And I think Lucas had planned all 6 movies ahead, but felt the special effects and budgets for the first trilogy weren't something doable then so he went with 4~6 first?
