Since we're still clearly talking about musicals and I definitely didn't miss this discussion, and as it's my right as a white person, oblig musical ranking list.
1) Les Mis obv 2) Phantom of the Opera 3) Wicked 4) Rent 5) Lion King 6) Book of Mormon 7) Spring Awakening 8) Chicago 9) My Fair Lady 10) Momma Mia (God I'm white) 11) Grease 12) Avenue Q 13) Mary Poppins 14) Spamalot 15) Hair 16) Dreamgirls 17) Singin' in the Rain 18) Pippin More musicals than I have age, wtf
Someone mentioned Nimona earlier, but if you are not reading it yet you are an uncultured barbarian. I'm also super fond of Unsounded. It's painful that there was an entire discussion of Rap and WuTang only got mentioned in jest and the opportunity to make fun of Waka Flocka went unused. Also I figure most people here have had some exposure to Blue Sky Black Death (esp since Day9 used to play it all the time), but And Stars, Ringed is awesome.
I'm really sad that the sequel to Phantom of the Opera was so bad.
Well, Love Never Dies wasn't that bad, it's just that it was literally impossible to live up to expectations. Still, it was kind of corny. Or rather it was kind of Coney.

Okay I'll shut up now.
Music was haunting but honestly pretty ok.
The story however... how could someone with any amount of self-respect do that. Like, George Lucas PALES in comparison to the fact that every little nuance and message in Phantom killed for some dumb murder/intrigue/sexscandal wannabe.
I really liked "Till I Hear You Sing (Once more)", and"Love Never Dies" was good, but honestly felt like something was still missing. I really feel like the setting was bad, they should have gone to China or India or something.
I used to do musicals all the time back in High School/uni.
Did some pretty obscure shit---Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Ruddigore,' for one.
Best musicals probably: Les Mis Into the Woods (FUCKING HYPED FOR THE MOVIE HOPE THEY DONT RUIN IT WITH STAR POWER) Ummm... Those two are probs my faves. I like about half the others that GhandiEAGLE listed. Spring Awakening, Rent and Grease, those can go choke on a dick. Mamma Mia is like the musical equivalent of achick flick.
My wife and I went to see Spring Awakening in the height if its popularity and we both absolutely hated it. It's as if it was written by a 17-year old. I mean, I guess that's the point, but it's really annoying to watch. The songs too.
Have yet to see Book of Mormon, we're going to try to get tickets to that. Heard great things though.

I didn't like Spring Awakening's plot all that much, but I enjoyed a lot of the songs. Must be my darned youth.
Book of Mormon was amazing. It feels really weird to laugh so hard at a musical though, lol

Weird to laugh at a musical? Where's your Avenue Q cred?

Avenue Q was funny too, but Mormon blew it out of the water imo
