World of Warcraft basically put the development of future Warcraft games on indefinite hold as WoW is basically the only title to continue developing the Warcraft mythos. For Blizzard, this is more or less fine because they have other IPs they can develop while WoW keeps churning forward. Game Freak's only real successful IP is Pokemon, so if the Pokemon MMO didn't actually pan out, they'd be in a pretty weird bind. Developing MMOs off existing IP does this weird thing where it puts the possibility of sequels in a limbo state while work has to be done developing new content for the MMO. You basically have to reconcile the fact that a brand that essentially functions on forcing you to buy new versions to get new content now has an iteration that is supposed to get regular content updates. For Pokemon in particular, the business model is driven by frequent sequels on a somewhat regular basis.

Pokemon would have a big advantage in that it has a huge fanbase and tons of content to work with in the form of pokemon that have been made and the battle system and such, but lots to work on in terms of game building and economy and making it work for large populations like the system of being a trainer but playing from you pokemons perspective sounds sort of like playing a shapeshifter or sort of marvel vs capcom thing where you switch out constantly for epic combos I would argue that the Pokemon battle system is an incredible hurdle to making a Pokemon MMO, not an asset. Pokemon would have to undergo immense core design changes to become a game playable in parties and welcoming of 'massively multiplayer' interaction.

It'll be like the difference between playing the new bw campaign but not being able to use the new bw units in 1v1's or something.

I mean that as a brand image issue where trying to market both the MMO and the regular games in parallel is a bit troublesome.
