Fetchlands act as a very efficent form of Mana Fixing, while having the added bonus of improving draws by:
1. Reducing the amount of lands you in theory would draw (deck thinning). 2. Making the top of your deck "live" if you have manipulation (scry/brainstorm/ponder/Jace ect.) 3. Fixing your mana base for you as most dual/tri color decks rely on a certain amount of a colored land in order to function. Fetch lands allow you to pick which lands you need where.
I'm staying up a bit later tonight to install some HOTS, then play MAYBE a game before bed.

Fetchlands also have the advantage that they can provide basic lands, which gets around Wasteland, as well as adding another card/card type into your graveyard.

Thanks for the info, not sure I get everything tho. What's mana fixing, the whole optimisation of your draw and the amount of terrains in your decks in comparison to your curve/needs?
How do you make your deck "live" if fetch lands make you shuffle once you've chosen a land? If you've got nothing interesting coming up according to your manipulation you just use a fetch land/if you've got nothing interesting but a fetch land you put it on top so next turn you can reshuffle your deck and hope for better draw RNG?
I assume you choose the amount of lands in your deck wrt probabilities to draw them, regardless of how much you need in the long term, especially because of accelerators/mana generating cards/combos. You're looking for "how many lands do I need to reliably hit that 4 forests mark by turn 5 where my combo can kick in" rather than "how much mana do I need to make this combo work, total"; putting a fetch land in place of a basic land reduces your total amount of available mana but doesn't hurt your mana base/curve since you'll never use every terrain from your card during a game?
Gosh I suck at being concise.
^ It doesn't seem that big to me, but I guess non-basic lands make up more lands than I'd think in competitive decks because of the advantags they provide and deck optimisation?

Also, Alaric, bear in mind that in formats with both fetch and dual or shock lands, the fact that the shock and dual lands have the basic subtypes means that a fetchland can reach for colors the basic types the fetch searches for does not actually provide (e.g. a Bloodstained Mire can provide white mana by fetching a Godless Shrine).

Yeah, it's like getting into DotA all over again, "that doesn't seem that broken. - That's because you don't know yet of that other thing that combos with it."
But you replace 110 heroes and 40 items with hundreds of cards. @_@

I'll give you a very basic example.
You're dead on your opponent's next turn. Let's say you also have a sensei's Divining Top in play (Not modern relevant but the easiest example), at the end of your opp's turn you spin top and look at the top 3 and see that all 3 cards have no chance in giving you the out you need in order to win the game/not die on his next turn.
With a fetch land you can crack it at the end of his turn (Assumning the fetch won't kill you.) get your land that you would have had to have in order to use the fetch for mana anyway, and MAKE THE TOP OF YOUR DECK LIVE again because those 3 cards that wouldn't have helped you are gone and you have a fresh 3 cards to look at (potentially 4 after your draw.)
The same thing goes for brainstorm effects where you draw 3 put 2 back, (2 you dont want) and then crack the fetch and shuffle so the top of your deck isn't stagnant.
|
Oh crap divining top looks super strong as long as you've got something else to draw and put it back in play without waiting for the next turn. I get it better, thanks, for some reason I was operating under the assumption that effects like these were stuck on "play then discard" cards, having it on just a mana cost or even tapping effect makes it much smoother.
Hm, as I thought, the melody is pretty darn good and the... I assume it's a vibraphone? little background tune is entrancing, but the whole thing has more potential. Gotta go around and check unofficial arranges in hopes of finding a more "complete"/less repetitive one.

Friday is a nice day.
So my sister wants to apply for a job at my company. She wants to move back to Chicago and hasn't found a teaching position here yet, and was thinking that maybe she wanted to take a break from teaching and do something else. On one hand, I want to help her find something, and if she got hired I know she'd do a good job (also I would get a bunch of money for referral). On the other hand, wouldn't it be weird to work with a family member at a full time job? I mean, it's one thing if it's a family run business, sure, but just a regular job seems different, no?
