How hard is it to start a website? Assuming you know nothing of coding. Can you just like hire people to make you a website? How much would that cost? I'M SCHEMING

Depends on how complex it is. Like $20 for something REALLY simple, and tens of thousands for something complex.

Then there's hosting costs. If it's just a personal thing that no one will visit you can use shared hosting for around $10-15 a month. If you have traffic plus a website that requires processing time it can start climbing.

It would be something big. Like I'd like to own it but probably hire people to work on it, an investment I guess.

LoL-related, Shake?
Because as optimistic as you may be, what 'market' there is incredibly saturated right now. I wouldn't advise it. I've had long conversations with DURR about this.

Yes and no. It would be a part of league which is not at all saturated.

That surprises me immensely as I was pretty sure that didn't exist. I'd be very interested to know what you're going to capitalize on, though I can understand if you're trying to keep it a secret.

Yeah, sorry. I know my age makes me sound naive but I'm at a spot where I can make this work and I'd hate to regret taking a small risk like this down the road.

Well best of luck!
I remain extremely skeptical considering what I've seen of the failure rate and people's intentions and promises, but I hope to be proven wrong!

shake, your question is way too vague. what do you want to website to do from a functional/technological point of view? you also need to be aware that there's a huge difference between a functioning website and good-looking functional website that people will want to use. your use case may be compelling but the website has to be equally compelling.

It's vague for a reason. It'll be down the line, just trying to gather some knowledge now.

Realistically there is a 1% chance that your idea is obviously awesome, and a 99% chance that people will think it's stupid and not worth bothering with. If you really think it is good you will have to forcibly make people listen to you.

Also, if it's not that complex a site someone can probably clone it really fast unless you have something magical on the backend. The network effect can help if you jump out of the gate but you have to work hard to maintain a lead.

All of this will be pretty tough if you aren't able to implement this stuff yourself.

I still feel like there were far more resources to help yourself improve at SC2 compared to LoL. Lots of sites like lolpro, mobafire, team solo mid have some pretty useless guides, and the guides quite often don't explain why they use a certain rune/item/mastery.

LoL still needs a Day9 IMO. Although i'm past that stage, would have been great about 6 months - a year ago. Actually who am I kidding I would still watch a Day9 style show for LoL

As a software engineer who has done mostly web work for the last year and a half or so... it depends. Simple sites can get thrown together in a week, from a technical perspecitve. Art assets take time. Developing web tools can take weeks to months depending on the complexity. Even something as "simple" as search and sort features can become complex depending on the nature of the data.

You may need licenses, you'll need a server (or outside hosting for the site), you'll likely need an on-call webmaster for at least the first month or so to watch for bugs and respond to users. Costs add up rather fast, depending on how fancy/simple you want it.

My old consulting firm booked me out at about... $180 an hour for the first few projects? Maybe a bit higher, I can't remember. You can get amateur to do it on the cheap, likely, but still have to front the cost for technology and the like.
