There is nobody who is a smart bet vs Maru in a match vs him. He is currently good at everything.
If Stats makes it to the finals and wins, he would be beating a Maru that is better than he is ever been. Pretty cool.
No, man. Maru was definitely better than this two years ago! His TvZ didn't impress in Kings of Battle, his TvP looks the best and his TvT is incredibly good(would like to see him against TY); he is back to potentially be #1.
Stats has beaten a stronger Maru in the past and his PvT looks better than ever.

Trap took the maximum damage he could have possibly taken there. I need to re-watch that fight. For a second I thougth Maru might be in trouble then Trap just evaporated. Honestly Maru seems unbeatable TvP right now. It's very fun to watch. Good point he did advance 2-0 in a group with PvT masters after all... I raise you that Stats also looked unbeatable in PvT in that group. In SC2 when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object we tend to have really disappointed one-sided series anyhow. Was it Dear that was on this crazy undefeated PvT streak before randomly getting bopped? Dear was on a 20-0 PvT streak and lost 3-1 to Maru in GSL last year, the year before Classic was 22-0 and then lost 4-1 also to Maru. Trap had a good shot. Outside of playing well himself obviously he probably needed a few rubs of the BO dice and/or Maru not to hit God mode.
Not an all-time classic, but a decent playoff match and really we haven’t had a huge amount of those in recent seasons.
Despite my fanboy bias being a factor Trap put in a good showing, just Jesus Maru today (and recently) is playing insane Starcraft.
You’re playing a guy who ekes out edges by doing things other players don’t do, so you’re behind vs where you’d be with all your other practice, then he doesn’t make any bloody mistakes either, so you can’t claw it back.
Case in point the last set, which was in fairness a disaster looking at it but I feel an explicable one.
It’s hard as hell to ever kill Maru’s reapers (see that famous clip of him killing an adept) when they’re poking, and he retains them really really well just poking for information.
One such repair danders by for an additional scout, times a perfect grenade to bounce a stalker and sees the SG and a void
Must be tremendously tilting playing someone that good. I’m convinced Trap was going to do that void glaives bust and surmised that Maru had sniffed it. Then he improvises something else with the path he went down and, well we saw how that went out.
Oddly enough despite that scout, that bust well could have worked if he’d just committed anyway. But hey mind games in SC2 are huge and amplified further by teammates facing off.

We’re going pure eye test here off a limited sample size, I think it’s certainly been quite a while since Maru has been looking so terrifying across all matchups. He’s probably had higher peaks in vP and vZ but he’s looking super rounded at the minute.

I feel like Maru 100% does not lose his Marines in his first push during game 3 vs Serral in a no ping environment and that changes the entire game. Maru was so far behind after that first push failed and it was completely avoidable. Just compare the speed he picked up his bio during this series to that engagement and that's the most clear loss to latency ever.

It’s good to have low latency combat once more, indeed iirc GSL is via some kind of LAN right?
There is close to zero chance I see Maru picking up a clump of bio while a disruptor shot is en route with much more delay. Likewise Trap probably isn’t pulling off some of that crazy Collosus/prism loading and unloading with much latency.
What’s really impressing me about this current iteration of Maru is he doesn’t need as much micro. It always helps and we saw plenty today, but his overall approach in all matchups is so solid in all sorts of other areas and it’s like trying to dislodge a limpet given how good his defensive positioning is.
Sure nobody is absolutely perfect but how often recently has Maru been caught unsieged, or his army being way out of position?

They'd still put him at number one in the Power Rankings over the GSL winner.

armani looking like he might take this entire tournament down.
