It also helps that the scene is very euro-centric right now, the big tournaments are generally hosted in EU. Most of these online events happen at good time for EU, bad time for KR also in the middle of a GSL season.

There's no reason to believe that reynor isnt at or beyond maru's level mechanically

reynor has the mechanics to beat serral in ZvZ (can't blame balance) offline....and serral's mechanics are superior to maru's

Reynor isn't close to Serral mechanically. The reason he can sometimes (and not often mind) beat him in ZvZ is usually down to tactics, of which Reynor is extremely abusive. Mirror matchups (across the board) are typically where mechanics matter the least. I'd bet on Serral to beat someone like Maru offline, but not Reynor.

The problem with what you say is that Reynor has never quite proved he's at that level mechanically. Maru has been the best in the world in that department enough times to give him credit. Not saying Reynor 100% isn't, but the responsibility goes on him to prove that.

Mechanics matter the MOST in mirror matches, contrary to what people thing.

You can't fall behind macro wise and you are stuck with the same units as opponent, so if you dont micro better you have a problem.

Yeah no, this has been shown time and time again. Mirror matchups tend to be closer between openents that are otherwise vastly apart in skill based on the other MUs. Mechanics can be very easily overcome by tactics or build orders.

In TvT and PvP it's a bigger deal, you often see weaker players take series off 'better' ones, but it applies to ZvZ as well. Players like Elazer and Lambo aren't likely to make a scratch against the top terrans or protosses, but them winning against any zerg isn't a suprise.
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

We're looking at the possibility of every EU player advancing and 3 of them winning their group, and a Showtime, a UT or an Elazer in the place of HM doesn't sound to bad.

Not sure about mechanics overall, but when it comes to speed I think Reynor is faster than Serral and Maru.

At least Rotti said he was mindblown when he saw Reynor play offline and he is the fastest player out there. And I'd say Rotti saw every top player there is play offline.

Based on their streams and first person views I don't think so at all. It's way harder to keep up with what Serral and Maru are doing.

Wonder if anyone has screen-per-minute stats for these kind of things

It would be pretty interesting indeed.
Serral might be very sightly better than him mechanically but this impression might be caused by the playstyle of both players, Serral focus a lot on the standart/defensive zerg gameplay with a lot of emphasis on the creep while Reynor is more agressive and tend to lose a bit more glings in consequence. (these traits really remind Life, I dismissed it in the past because he was still not at this level but nowadays...)

Well not only those two. Those guys are the best but that's also due to the fact they have decent practice partners. Elazer, Lambo, Clem, ShoWTimE, HeRoMaRinE, uThermal, souL are all players that are capable of taking games if not series from top Koreans these days imo.

It is a bit disappointing that clem did not get out first from the group because then all groups would have a foreigner as first and this would have guaranteed four Foreigner (European) vs Koreans at ro8.

To be honest, I like Clem a lot too.

I just don't want to not see all TvT, ZvZ and TvZ for the rest of the tournament.

Maru and Serral are probably top 5.
