Gonna keep an eye on Mana-Fanta, sOs-Cure, Keen-Clem/Heromarine to start the first bracket and Showtime-Stephano/Harstem, Scarlett-herO and Trap-aLive in the second one.
I hope there is plenty of stream

geesh these are tough to predict

bracket1 i literally don't feel confident with any prediction but i'd go sos, fantasy, keen

bracket2 ill go showtime scarlett trap, but the top half of that bracket makes me sad because i'd love to see scarlett, showtime, stephano all go through

Yup. This is going to be an awesome day and a really sad day. Plenty of top players are going to be going out early.

Unless (T)KeeN secretly has good enough TvP to beat (P)Dear and decided not to show it when going 0-4 against (P)Dear and (P)Trust in his GSL group to start the month, I have a hard time seeing him get out of the group because I would say he'd be a pretty significant underdog to either (T)Cure or (T)FanTaSy as his TvT results over the past year are basically limited to repeatedly beating (T)aLive and generally losing to anyone else with a pulse.

I am going to do a "certain, likely, unlikely but possible" ranking, because I think that's the best and most useful way to make predictions.

Bracket One
Certain: Dear. His bracket is pretty easy.
Likely: sOs, Cure.
Unlikely but Possible: Leenock, Keen, Heromarine, Fantasy, Mana

Bracket Two
Certain: No one. Anyone could conceivably get taken out twice.
Likely: Trap, Showtime, aLive, herO,
Unlikely but Possible:Scarlett, other foreigners.

Personally I want Mana, Fanta, Heromarine and Showtime, TLO, Nerchio

I know it's not gonna happen.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

Bracket #2: (P)herO ~ (P)Trap ~ (P)ShoWTimE

the other 2 brackets are much harder to predict

ShowTime, Reynor, Lambo and Scarlett are the only open bracket foreigners that seem possible to advance.

No chance I'm going to be up for the Bracket 1, but I'm stoked for the second. Feels good to have IEM kick into gear tomorrow. I even prepared and have popcorn in the microwave ready for breakfast. + Show Spoiler +
Mostly because I forgot to get cereal at the store, but hey, popcorn and SC is just as good.

Crossing my fingers for a few good Snute and TLO games to watch later.

idk, I think of PvZ as being sOs' worst but also the one we see him the least in. The only Zerg here who's consistently had his number throughout his career is soO. He probably can't beat Serral either. He should be fine against every other Zerg in attendance though.

It would be EPIC to see Serral vs Maru in grand final. Or even Serral vs Stats again. As my brood i keep my fingers crossed for pl stuff ( Elazer/Mana/Nerchio/Soul/Art/Geralt/Ziggy), but nowadays and after last balance Re:Generation shows it will be a slaughter for non-Korean players. I wish we had more tournaments like IEM. It has the same type of lustre as the WoL MLG days with tournament lives on from the start and super competitive brackets. Hoping for some great games and fingers crossed that (T)FanTaSy makes it out!

Big questions:
1. Will stats still be in a slump?
2. Can alive recapture the magic from his last run here?
3. Do foreigners still suck?

The amount of downtime (i.e., time spent outside of games) is disappointing. We're missing out of so many great games!

2. ESL_SC2b (Wardi)
3. ESL (ZombieGrub)

Mana's so stubborn with Nexus first and no Stargate openers. Leenock is one of the most aggressive Zergs out there, what did he expect?

i hope he qualifies to ro24. he has entertaining games and he's beaten maru on ladder before. maybe his 0-4 GSL round motivates him to prove himself offline

Fantasy flying all the way to Katowice to get Protossed out of the tournament is a sad state of affairs.

I don't think he has the time to get to the skill level necessary to make a living as a pro SC2 terran... he should go back to SC1 or retire or switch to Protoss or something

He's become much much better in only some months of practice. Pretty sure that if he keeps going like this he should become a GSL Ro16 regular.

Also, we don't really know if he's had a bad day

Misread bracket. But actually I would favor Namshar, I think he has one of the best ZvZs in Europe.

meh, didn't he get 3-0'd by denver several days ago? it can go either way, but I'd definitely favor leenock here

He knocked out rogue 2-0 at HSC so he can't be too bad.

To IEM Technical Service Stuff: pls check and change refresh rate in your monitors, some of them work in under 60Hz (f.e. ragnarok monitor, ragnarok vs keen). It is easy to recognize, when streaming camera shows participant's device (blinking).

I exaggerated, it's not "by far" the weakest. Bracket 2 seems a joke to you because there are too few koreans? Trap and herO are still pretty good and top foreigners like ShowTime and Scarlett are arguably better than non top koreans like Ragnarok(who played very good and advanced deservingly), Keen, Leenock et cetera.

Keen/Ragnarok was good. I'll also pass forward the recommendation for Keen/Heromarine Game 2.

To be fair, we didn’t really get a good gauge of Ragnarok’s strength in GSL because he immediately hit Maru, who is on another level of Terran than Keen, and we never saw his ZvP.

True that. But its not a insurmountable challenge like facing any of bly, scarlett, nerchio, tlo, even risky?

During that game 3 vs harstem it came to my mind a couple of times that if it was showtime steph woudnt have come back like that, but lets see

Yeah, it will be a close series.

Might be a little controversial but I wish they would have showed other games on the main stream. Even though it's a qualifying match, I feel like other games being played now on Bracket 2 would be more hyped.

I'd be okay with games -> interview -> break rinse and repeat...they did that the first time iirc, and the rest have been games -> break -> interview -> break...it's a bit excessive to say the least.

Dear seems on point today, aside from that series vs Ragnarok. Hopefully, he'll deliver like last year's IEM.

Or game - break - interview - game, if they need the break to set up.
I bear this sig to commemorate the loss of the team icon that commemorated Oversky's 2008-2009 Proleague Round 1 performance.

Nydus received 4 buffs:

1. 100% increase of load and unload speed.
2. 50% HP buff to nydus worm.
3. Nydus worms now 2 times cheaper.
4. Nydus network 50 gas cheaper.

My understanding was that he had a large influence on any major Blizzard-sanctioned event for SC2, and this would absolutely be one of them.

No. Scarlett rushed nydus with lings and queens in game 1 vs herO. In game 2 herO cannon rushed in response to Scarlett's cheese in form of proxy hatchery at herO's natural. Game 3 was roach ling cheese.

I'm amazed that Trap lasted that long considering he had under half of the Z supply and almost no workers in the early game. 15 min game out of a 5 min gg

Bly confirmed not worthy of being compared to Has. Even if he had lost this game, it would have been a lesser throw than Has vs Maru or Has vs Dark.

Has was on 6 base to 3 (2 for the longest time) on Vaani Research Station and didn't think to tech past blink stalkers for the longest time. Eventually he decided to go into colossi but he blinked like 25 stalkers into Maru's main and lost them all for free before his transition was done so he died to the counter attack.

They need to stop inviting a list of observers* to each game that are playing on shit laptops, the game engine only runs as fast as the slowest PC (if one player/obs can't simulate a tick in time, the game time literally stops until they do) and they've had constant issues with it since i started watching hours ago.

*saw it once on ZG stream before one of them problematic games and they had like 7 people in a 1v1 game

How many players have to pause games in the middle of a fight to complain about it before they take note?

You kinda have to pay people to start out. Especially for streaming, you have to give reasons for the people to move over so you can actually develop a sustainable ecosystem. It usually fails. In terms of video hosting, I think it'd be a bit easier because youtubers are already trying to find ways to escape youtube

57k. We should smash that, but it's hard to predict considering the sheer hype of the Katowice Major in CSGO. Heck, I'll be watching Liquid during that myself.

Well, WCS Winter NA had nowhere near this much lag and it was online competition with players halfway across the world from each other.

Ah, how do we know that? So then we blame tournament organizers? Though I'd still blame activision-blizzard for forcing PC1 to sync to pc2.

well the internet is big and lag is difficult to predict, which is why it makes no sense to not have a LAN mode.

Most likely the game stuttering and slowdown is caused by the observers running on slow PC's. The game can only run as smoothly and fast as the slowest hardware in the game, even in an observer position.

Last year peak was at 40k. Also the average viewer is higher than last year but it does not mean anything yet as last year was a 10 hours show while this one is at 8h30 atm.

What did the finals peak at last year?

57k. We should smash that, but it's hard to predict considering the sheer hype of the Katowice Major in CSGO. Heck, I'll be watching Liquid during that myself.

It was a Zvp finals last year, and a rough 4-0, we should smash it easily, even more with a TvZ

CSGO major final is a big deal, a lot of people will be checking the sc2 final to see when it will start.

Granted they aren't real fans, but I'd expect the views to go up anyway

It is not on the same stream though. ESL might host the SC2 stream who knows.

they are playing on a mod that makes the skins not show up for the players so blizzard can shove their horrible skins down our throats without affecting the players.

They can at least limit the chat in some way (like sub or slowmode) if they don't want any mods to read the chat. If they do, ez 3 day bans on the people doing it bnet accounts linked for the loot

It influences every zvp, either there are a bunch of nydus's coming up or you have to play as if there will be. I think we'll see a ton more of them

Oh yeah, they definitely over-buffed it, and considering the state of the ZvP otherwise, it's going to be used basically every game. A lot of games will be won or lost on the back of nydus play, which isn't exactly rewarding all the time, for either side.

There has always been, but only in China. Wc3 is in China what BW is in Korea.

But with the announcement of reforged and thanks to Back2Warcraft and Grubby, wc3 is also making a comeback outside of China now.

Newbee has Lyn (Orc), Lawliet(Nightelf) and 120(Undead). All of them are among the very best of their race.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

WC3 is still pretty big in China, and it will get a bump from Reforged.

Earlier they were putting some effort into moderating, bummer that they still don't do a great job when it's really needed but... I guess at least they tried a little bit for once. Maybe this year one org will finally figure it out.

People always complain that the Korean scene is dying and there is no new talent etc etc

But now we get to see an up-and-coming Korean Terran play Showtime.

I for one am very excited!

Neeb has been solid for a long time but somehow manages to flop or get really unlucky in the big events.

On the other hand, your analysis is exquisite.
ShoWTime isn't exactly sharp, lately, but there weren't really major upsets among foreigners' ranks today.

Don't count out Showtime, just because he didn't perform today. He can play way better and Reynor, Lambo and Elazer are still in it.

I mean PiG called him out and it went EXACTLY like he predicted.

Showtime looks good vs Terran and then just.... loses. It's inexplicable.

The only explanation I can even try and muster is that European Terrans are just THAT rare and THAT bad that he just never gets the practice that he should so that when he actually meets quality Terrans, Korean or otherwise he just doesn't have the honed practice to really know how to put them away.

yes it does. they changed it in the last big patch.

well to be fair a T army up two upgrades with equal tech (ghosts vs HTs) should indeed not lose

Upgrades are enormous for bio, lings, zealots etc. It's a massive uphill battle for all 3 races if you're fighting with those units while down multiple upgrades.

Rotti specifically mentioned gateway units because it was the P playing at the upgrade disadvantage but i see no reason to make it about racial balance.

I don't think Alive was microing that badly, but he was definitely trying to do too much when all he needed to was to focus on the main push. After the big early game advantage he should just get 2/2 and bunkers, what could hero do then? Roll over and die pretty much.

yeah I don't get why he never got a defensive stance. It's not like he didn't know herO was kinda broke too, with no forges. Just get bunkers indeed.

He kept trying to push out and counterattacking while knowing just how few probes herO's got. Probably pressure got to him that he didn't notice the lack of forges but yeah, once you saw herO keeps trying to attack you, why not just stay back and maybe build a bunker at the third?

rotti is objectively among the least biased casters. of course he sees things from the protoss POV because that's his race, but he's aware of his own biases, calls them out, and also counteracts them by making valid points from the other races' perspective too. if you've ever watched him stream you know that he has a pretty great competitive attitude toward balance

I dunno how you objectively measure caster bias. Personally I also don't think he's that biased relative to his peers, but I don't think that's in any way objective.

I don't disagree with this - it's just something I noticed that the Protoss POV he sees the game from sometimes shines through despite his best efforts. Not really a criticism though, the only casters where I couldn't tell which race they play if I didn't know are probably Tastosis.

when people say "objective" in this context it means that i have made an effort to consider the subject from multiple points of view. this is common usage, and you should probably adapt to it since we are not writing essays or performing experiments

Painful looking at aLive after that loss.

Playing that series must have been excruciating. It's almost 6 am in Korea, these guys must be completely fatigued

I'm more of an aLive fan but I predicted herO to advance out of the winner's bracket. I don't know what the hell is up with ZvP right now, but the fact that Scarlett and especially Ragnarok wrecked this group so bad completely busted this portion of my bracket.

Have you made an effort to consider the subject from multiple points of view? I couldn't tell. 'Objectively' evaluating caster bias is about as objective as appreciating art objectively.

Priceless to hear Rotti speak about how useless gateway units are against superior upgrades and then watch herO win with only gateway units

Yeah it becomes sometimes quite obvious he plays Protoss in his casts even if he tries to be as neutral as possible

rotti is objectively among the least biased casters. of course he sees things from the protoss POV because that's his race, but he's aware of his own biases, calls them out, and also counteracts them by making valid points from the other races' perspective too. if you've ever watched him stream you know that he has a pretty great competitive attitude toward balance

I dunno how you objectively measure caster bias. Personally I also don't think he's that biased relative to his peers, but I don't think that's in any way objective.

when people say "objective" in this context it means that i have made an effort to consider the subject from multiple points of view. this is common usage, and you should probably adapt to it since we are not writing essays or performing experiments

Have you made an effort to consider the subject from multiple points of view? I couldn't tell. 'Objectively' evaluating caster bias is about as objective as appreciating art objectively.

I think it's just common misusage of "objective" to mean "of the majority opinion" nowadays, the same way "literal" became literally "figuratively."

But even if so, I can't see how one person can claim to represent "of the majority opinion," so I'm with Zigg here
Jung Yoon Jong fighting, even after retirement! Feel better soon.

Painful looking at aLive after that loss.

Playing that series must have been excruciating. It's almost 6 am in Korea, these guys must be completely fatigued

Jetlag doesn't exist - it's just an excuse for when koreans lose to foreigners.
At least that's what I've been told

Yeah, well I guess it can be real when it is Korea v Korea.

aLive definitely made a lot of mistakes which seemed to come from him having a hard time keeping track of everything going on. Looked like someone worn out from a very long day.
