Thinking of the WCS Global Finals being decided by a game on either Interloper or Catallena makes me wish the map pool were 2 maps larger. Yeah, choosing something like Frost or Whirlwind would give us maps we've seen a million times, but we are going to see the same few maps over and over. If Blizzard wanted to keep the pool smallish to be easier for the players to prepare, they could just swap those 2 out.

Which is why we should have a ladder pool of size 11 (or 9 or 13) and make tournament map pools a subset of that pool. Tournaments could thus avoid maps that are failures, and also have some leeway to select a balanced pool.

Also I don't think Frost or Whirlwind would fix anything, since they're pretty bad. Whirlwind was part of the super tournament pool and was vetoed a ton.

A larger ladder pool would be better though of course if you only use a subset, you'll likely have players complain that the maps which blatantly favor their race are not included.

I mentioned Frost and Whirlwind since they have been included in the map pools of recent Korean tournaments and are ones most pros have played a million times. There are probably dozens of more interesting maps that could be chosen.

Using a subset gives a better pool. If ladder has 6 maps that are zerg favoured in PvZ, 4 maps that are protoss favoured, and 1 that's balanced zerg is better off after the vetoes. Whereas using a subset means the organizer can avoid maps that have shown themselves to be problematic and get a more balanced pool. If you have players complaining that you didn't include the totally balanced Prion Terraces, let them howl.

In an eight of the time, and a twentieth of the passion? I dunno Kev.

If we can convince The_Templar to post at his 2014 volume, we could make it.

Yea...I don't think so. ITH and I don't really post now, and elentos being here helps, but I doubt it's enough.

Considering how long his career went on and that he's been in the military, qualifying for blizzcon 2018 would be really impressive.

For the record I think Interloper is a pretty okay map. It has a few problems such an overabundance of rocks and LOS blockers, and it isn't the most popular, but I don't think it's bad per se. It's just that Interloper is a smaller, chokier map and that in every match-up there's a player that wants to play giant open maps, and since half the pool is giant open maps it's easy for that player to get his way.

Do you have any examples of good pro games on the map? The one game I remember was Neeb TRUE in Montreal and that entire series was a bloodbath.

I can't remember any that were exceptional (mostly due to how seldom Interloper is played, but also since I've been pretty busy recently and haven't had much time to watch). Dear vs Dark at Master's Coliseum 2 was pretty good I think?

So what are people predicting as far as TvZ goes at Blizzcon. Mech or bio?

The bio TvZ meta has been mapped out for ages, and the consensus seems to be that LBH is favored but not unbeatable. Mech on the other hand is in a bit of an interesting spot right now. I recently rewatched the vods of Dark vs Inno in GSL, and Rogue vs Inno in the ST. Having seen the way those games played out, I'm reasonably certain that Inno specifically crafted his build to counter Dark's build, and Rogue in turn specifically crafted his own build to counter Inno's.

Insofar as I understand it, Dark's anti-mech play revolves around a big BL-based deathball, supported by Hydras, Vipers and Corruptors. The idea is to neutralize the Terran's AA via Abduct/Parasitic Bomb + Hydras/Corruptors and thereby allow the BLs to go to town against the Terran's tanks. Various runbys are sprinkled in for harass and countering.

Inno countered this style by using double-Starport Banshees for pressure and to keep Dark back while he macro'd up into a sufficiently large Siege Tank count + Hellbats and Vikings. Defensively or offensively, the Tanks and Hellbats are gradually traded out for more Thors and Vikings until a maxed push (emphasis on positioning between the hatches) ends the game. NB: Mass thor is surprisingly effective. Also, splitting the mech army works quite well against Dark's style, since BLs are slow and the Zerg deathball must stay together.

Rogue countered that style by using SH to continually pressure Inno and gradually starve the Terran economy with a soft-contain while building up a massive bank himself. When Inno finally made his maxed push, Rogue traded out and remaxed several times, ending with one-two combo of a mass bane transition to take out the Hellbat screen, followed immediately by a mass crackling transition to finish the job. Ling/Bane was the counter to mech all along?

A counter to Rogue's style has yet to be demonstrated, if it even exists. Theorycrafting, I would say that battle mech would probably be a decent starting point, to try and exploit the cooldown of the SH. Turtling is just a slow death sentence.

A little bit? Negative (mapmaker of both Interloper and Terraform) himself admits that Interloper is basically a remix of Terraform.

Terraform was a great map to rape Zerg, I'm glad now you can at least 12pool on it before archon immortal amoves into you through a lurker field

This is good read, I also tought about battle mech but I don't see a lot of it since it got kind of figured out (maybe I need to watch more Gumiho)
