During Montreal, PengWin got into an argument saying matches played from the Korean server to US West are entirely invalid because
Even I could beat someone like MajOr when they were playing from Korea.

I challenged PengWin saying he wouldn't even be able to take 5 games off of MajOr in a Bo39. He happily accepted the challenge, believing strongly in the power of cross server lag. MajOr heard about this and thought there was no way in hell PengWin would take that many games off of him in a Bo39, much less a Bo69.

Do cross server games hold any value or can PengWin prove his point that even he can knock out a top level player like MajOr when he plays cross server? Whose ego will be battered and bruised? Find out on the grudgematch!

Prizepool
Starting prize pool is $100. You can raise it if you decide to contribute! You can also add $1 by using the code specialpengwin.
https://matcherino.com/tournaments/8047/description

Format

Here are the rules.
  • PengWin has to win 5 games before MajOr wins 20.
  • Games will be played on US West while MajOr is in Korea and PengWin is on the East coast of the USA
  • 80% of the prize pool goes to the winner, but most important so does all of the ego and right in the argument.
  • Map pool will be the current ladder map pool and the SSL/GSL map pool.

Beautiful. Not sure if this will be the most boring or most exciting event in history but it's gonna be interesting nonetheless

Pengwin is 1100 rating vs Special's 2300. Special outclasses Pengwin. It should be like a low-mid GM vs Neeb sorta stomp, but according to Pengwin, cross server lag means that massive difference won't matter

Major will win easily, I don't even think I could win 20% be major. USW ping from KR is usually only like 120ish, maybe 150 max. 150 is annoying but it doesn't destroy your play.

Major is gonna win 20-0 if he dont play around. This is like a 1.5k mmr difference between these 2 players.

It would probably be fairer if you make it PengWin have to win 1 game before MajOr wins 100.

PengWin might be able to take a game with some really hilarious cheese though, you never really know. Although statistically he's gonna get thrashed.

ZvT on Arch of Janus is probably Pengwin's best chance. Though I don't it would say much about the effect of cross-server ping.

Shouldn't the games be held in US Central or US East since PengWin is in US East? I live in Toronto and the ping to US West is around 100ms.

Ravi's kinda just going with the "latency" thing as a storytelling mechanism, which is fine. Major and I both agreed to West. I do have about a 60 ping advantage (90 to 150) so it's still kinda an advantage, if not so large

The most depressing thing is that Pengwin could do that to most of us so easily... The gap is just so freaking huge.

not depressing at all, it shows how much work and practice goes into advancing beyond the dia-master casual high level, which i think is pretty cool :D

kind of a reason for the rest of us to just relax and enjoy our rank without feeling like everyone has to think they're innovation

to people saying "easy to win 5 games" - those ppl clearly dont understand level.

the step from bronze to low-mid gm is smaller then the step from low-mid gm to top 10 foreigner. to win 5 games out of 25 consistantly, you have to be a stable high gm player.

The skill gap between me playing at 4000MMR vs an opponent at 4800MMR is already huge... Why would you say bronze to low GM is a small skill gap?

But that's false. I mean, both gaps are large, but KW is clearly exaggerating.

I'd say the gap is more similar to like, Plat 3 --> ~130 GM and ~130 GM --> top foreigner being about the same. Obviously Bronze is an overexaggeration, but it's a massive skill gap regardless

There seems to be a huge misunderstanding of the skill gaps in the low levels. Obviously, it's difficult for me to compare with the "GM to pros" gap, but the idea of Bronze - GM gap being somehow "small" is absurd. I am low Diamond and I am pretty sure a "genuinely" Bronze player (that is someone who has not tanked their MMR on purpose, not is Bronze just after placement and ready to climb quickly) would never take a game off me. I even think I can win almost 100% games against a common Gold player, if I am told in advance I am playing a Gold player, allowing me to play super safe and thus avoid any cheeses - against a fellow diamond, such play would leave me too vulnerable to macro builds, but that doesn't matter against a Gold player. Between 130 GM and Bronze, you can probably fit 4-8 levels of "A will always beat B will always beat C ...", so the gap is really immense.

They are talking about skill gap, not who can beat who in head to head gap.

The learning curve (in term of time spent playing) of starcraft 2 is logarithmic I would say, so you don't need much time to go from bronze to top master / low GM, but it takes A LOT of time and dedication to go from low GM to being a threat for other pros in competitions.
