This tournament is this big because Alibaba the giant company is the ones who have re done this World Championships. They made it good for sc2 and all individual games but the team games like CSGO and Dota 2 which they are doing tournaments for as well it not as good.

Personally I think mutual match (head-to-head) first in a 2-way-tie is the better option, as it emphasizes match wins (bo3) over map wins.
