Which is sad. I gotta feeling the blizzcon lineup is gonna be meh this time
The instant you provide tournaments all over the world is the instant you decide a yearly ranking will favor the people who go to all these tournaments on top of the regular leagues. I don't think it's happy or sad, it's just how it has to be.
Situations like these are where the description of chess is really demonstrated. What Polt traded was like trading a bishop for a rook. Granted if allowed Macsed can rebuild said rook, but he swept a leg out from underneath macsed and that should be game with standard play.
It may be a bit more like trading a knight for position or a bishop, depends on how you like to play chess.

GSL just needs to award way more WCS points, a RO4 in it should be almost a guaranteed invite to blizzcon.
I'm still debating how much I'd like WCS winners getting seeded into blizcon and then have the remaining 7 be the next best 7 ranked. There would be pluses and minuses with it

No, Korea should have some weekends tournaments (3-4 yearly). Foreigners dont visit it for obvious reasons. I dont know why sc2 dont have it oO wc3 had 4-8 weekends tournaments in korea yearly.

He's done nothing to deserve being there this year.
If Blizzcon wasn't hard capped at 16 players I'd have no problems with him being there.
But Jaedong at Blizzcon over Maru, Innovation or Soulkey? Hard to justify.

Yeah, if he deserved it, which is hard to call based off his WCS performances.

Well he's earned the points, so he deserves to be there.
Kespa teams don't want to send their players abroad to foreign tournaments to earn WCS points. It'd be unfair to give those players free tickets over those who have been to dozens of tournaments to work and try and earn their place. Regardless of the fact players like Maru and Soulkey may be better.
That said, WCS is meant to establish who is the best player in the world, so it is a little silly. Perhaps having more than 16 players would be better.

How doesn't he deserve it, he has gathered WCS points through the WCS system, just like everyone else. Maru and Soulkey has done nothing to deserve a blizzcon spot.

The system is fundamentally broken due to the way it doles out points to 3rd party tournaments. Who "deserves" to be there is entirely up for debate.

If there were 32 players at blizzcon you would always find someone sitting a the 40th place better than someone at 25th place!

Best solution is probably to offer WCS points in Proleague.
I think Rotterdam in the U.S. has learned this phrase "firing up" fell in love with it and uses it at least 3 times per minute.
"We're firing up the game" "Polt is firing up the upgrades" "Polt is firing up the marauder" "he needs to fire up the bane speed or he's doomed" "He's getting ready to fire up some units"
ahahahahaha Rotti I love you man, but you gotta change it up.
Jaedong has earned the points just for GOING to the tournaments. He's earned a majority of his points off of placing 3-4th in 2 Dreamhacks and two IEMs.
In what way does that qualify him over Maru who's made it to back to back Ro4s in GSL? Jaedong wouldn't even QUALIFY for Code S the way he's been playing.
The whole system is completely screwed up. It rewards players on successful teams that just travel a lot. Results hardly matter.
Holy fuck he does deserve to be in BlizzCon he has worked his ass off flying to all these tourneys so that he can go he fucking deserves it. You're saying that Maru should go because he's better but it's not a contest of whos the best ffs
To be fair, one could quite easily say that several people at the last Blizzcon didn't deserve it because they were only doing well in a couple of WCS events (such as Alive or, ironically, sOs), while the points from having consistent results at all sorts of events weren't enough for someone like Hyun, who basically did last year what Jaedong did this year.

if that was sarcasm you're amazing, if not think about what you just said in context haha. i think non-WCS tournaments shouldn't give any WCS points tbh.

I get how people are jealous of people traveling around and gathering points. But no one is forced to compete in WCS or their 3rd party tournaments if they don't like the system. Doesn't mean those that do deserve it less. There are tons of good players in other sports that don't have the funding to travel travel and compete in large tournaments abroad, doesn't mean that the ones competing are less deserving. If anything they have been better at choosing their path and acquiring sponsors or teams that let them.

Agreed. Foreign tournaments shouldn't be worth WCS points at all.

you guys have both fair points. Jaedon flew all over the place and was pretty consistent and that's a great achievement; on the other hand someone like Maru who hasn't traveled but has played vs some of the best players in the world ALL THE TIME and placed twice top 4 in the GSL which is far harder than most foreign tournaments is penalized and likely won't attend. It's a shame because I feel the current top 16 is not bad but could be better if people like Maru were able to make it in. The system is not perfect and unfortunately probably never will.
We can hope Maru finally wins a GSL and gets enough points to jump in the top16, other than that, there is super low chances of Maru attending Blizzcon even tho I would LOVE for him to be there, I agree he deserves it.
Find it funny how people wanted higher prizepools for KR and slightly higher for AM and EU in exchange for no season finals and now everyone is whining about that...

It's almost as if "the community" is not a single organism, but a diverse group of people who have differing opinions on how the system should work.

The Season finals produced easily the best games last year. They were the best events, they even trumped Blizzcon in terms of pure entertainment value.
Blizzard got rid of them because they were "too hard to follow" which makes about as much sense as Diablo 3's Elective Mode fiasco.

FTFY
Jaedong gets points because he's on EG. The system rewards the teams that already have money. That's a bad thing in any sport just ask MLB fans.

I'd argue that it's the Kespa players who literally don't have the free plane tickets to attend tournaments all over the world. They actually have to earn their WCS points the hard way, by practicing hard and being better at the game than everybody else.

I'd argue it was better last year with the end of season tournaments. It allowed the 3rd-5th place players in the GSL a better chance to attend Blizzcon.

Blizzard got rid of them because people on reddit, TL, battle.net forums, etc were clamoring to get rid of season finals. People said it cheapened the winners of each regional and that it disrupted storylines.

What's wrong with that? Easy.
Jaedong's "hard earned" WCS points come from stomping foreign players and lower tier Koreans at Dreamhack and IEM. The competition he faces to earn those points is laughable compared to the competition in the Korean scene.
His point total doesn't reflect his actual results. It's not like he's Taeja who gets his insane point totals from WINNING every single foreign tournament, he gets his points just for placing. His 350 points from Dreamhack and IEM Ro4s are equal to a top 12 placing in WCS. Jaedong hasn't made it out of the Ro32 in WCS AMERICA all year and yet has more total points than finalists and semifinalists from other WCS regions.

If Maru, TY or Soulkey wanted to participate in more tournaments, I am sure they could acquire a foreign team willing to send them to some. If they don't want to do what the EU/NA koreans are doing and instead focus on Proleague and a single WCS tournament, then that's their fault. They do not deserve to participate in a tournament they don't even try to qualify for. Jaedong is so undeserving, building his name and skill and acquiring a good team on the back of it. Heh.

My problem with your argumentation is that you say X,Y and Z deserve it more cause you think they are better. While i think that is certainly true when they can prepare, i am not so sure if that is true for weekend tournaments. Weekend tournaments and tournaments like the gsl are basically 2 different things entirely. You say JD takes the easy route, but you can't even be sure that Maru for example would have done as good at these tournaments at all. It is all only speculation and if he can't attend, well should we give him the points casue we think he is better? No sry, that doesn't make any sense. Blame his team for not sending him to any tournaments, not the other players who play these and do well.

Your reasoning is totally arbitrary. You think he doesn't deserve it cause he didn't win X or Y. Fact is he has enough points cause he attends and actually plays tournaments and does well enough. People like you would rather vote for the top 16 players cause you think "they deserve it" instead of having a competition. If Player X or Y can't participate in enough tournaments that is hardly a reason JD (or any other player) doesn't deserve to be there when he DID actually compete. I am also pretty sure that kespa WOULD have enough money to send their big guns to enough tournaments, they choose not to do so, well flame them, not people who aren't at fault.

Its no ones "fault" but Blizzard. This WCS system is beyond flawed. Hell if for every 10 weekend events outside of Korea we had one in Korea worth the same WCS points you'd still see an even better quality of players. Not to mention if you're argument is just "well they should just go to foreign teams" that would literally break the infrastructure of SC2 in Korea. If all the best players were going around the world there wouldn't BE a proleague.

Well no one knows for sure if they would excel at weekend tournaments because their team refuses to send them to these weekend tournaments. Kespa cares mainly about Proleague. How often do we see someone from Kespa participating in these weekend tournaments? I will say this upfront that I will not be going to Liquidpedia to dig up the results, but from all the weekend tournaments I watched (quite a lot), there weren't more than a handful of Kespa players at each event.

We shouldn't give any free points but tournaments with better players should give more points. The WCS point system this year is complete bullshit. It just totally sucks.
Last year's was way better. They should give GSL double the points of WCS America and Europe at least.

How doesn't he deserve it, he has gathered WCS points through the WCS system, just like everyone else. Maru and Soulkey has done nothing to deserve a blizzcon spot.
Mainly because the team sends him everywhere to rack up those WCS points? A lot more deserving people deserve the WCS points instead. Players like Maru, TY, or Soulkey for example. He's basically taking advantage of the fact that the team lets him travel.
Heh.
What you don't realize is that blizzard doesn't want the 16 most skilled players at blizzcon. Blizzard wants the 16 most famous, fan-favourite players, which is a reasonable choice marketing-wise. And to get them, you just look at who wins the most at foreign tournaments. Sure GSL and proleague are the highest level competitions, but how many viewers do they actually make, compared to a dreamhack or an IEM?

Korea is one country and blizzcon is a global event. And yes, the greatest players reside and train in Korea, and that makes proleague and code S fantastic. But it doesn't give them the right to participate in global events on the back of playing good games against each other. Your point of having more WCS tournaments in korea is good, though.
But being a professional is about making the best out of a situation. And right now the situation is that if you want to compete in WCS tournaments, you need to have the financial backing from a team that wants you to compete in them. Clearly these players do not want to complete in WCS tournaments more than they want to reside in korea and play in Proleague.
@The_Red_Viper No I won't blame KESPA for this mess, this mess lies entirely on Blizzard for choosing to A: Reward WCS points to 3rd party tournaments and for B: Awarding SO MANY GODDAMN points to said tournaments.
It'd be one thing if the point gains were small and really only served as a tie breaker, but they aren't.
750 points for a top placing finish at Redbull Battlegrounds or G3? That's worth a Top 4 placing in WCS which takes place over a 2 month period and has enormous qualifiers that is open to anyone that wants to compete. G3? 3 players of the 16 in attendance qualified, the rest were invited.
Redbull Battlegrounds? Same story made up almost entirely of players that were invited.
That's a problem. Those tournaments should NOT be worth as many points as a top 4 finish in WCS. It's one thing if IEM or MLG that have enormous open brackets are worth a significant point total, but these other tournaments are awarding tons of points just for being a popular player.
It's not a fair system. It rewards popularity and team popularity more than anything else. If we wanted the system to be fair and accurately portray who is deserving of a Blizzcon spot, we'd multiply the points issued by WCS tournaments by a factor of 3. That would mean a player would have to win 3 foreign tournaments to earn the same amount of points as a top 4 finisher in WCS.

If Proleague and GSL was in the morning or afternoon in Europe or America? Probably similar to the amount of viewers that IEM or Dreamhack gets. A lot of people don't watch VODs because there is already so much to watch. Way too much.
Polt's Hellion/Banshee control was really showing back in WoL when he used a Hellion/Banshee build against Protosses to great effect. After losing to HyuN 3-0 against Roaches I bet he wants revenge against the build.

Are you sure about that? I remember LucifroN or GuMiho playing that but not Polt.

Did it against Creator a while ago and he demolished him.

I would say Polt and MC are the most consistent players considering they are performing really well since the start of SC2.

youre right, everyone can lose to just about anyone.
Yep that's the whole part i don't like in sc2 tbh.
Happens in other sports too. It's not like any random player can just win a series like this vs these guys.
Indeed, there is not a single sport in the world where the "better" player or team wins every time. Even in the 12 most dominant regular seasons in modern MLB history, only 5 of those teams wound up winning the World Series.

You will have this opportunity with Red Bull Battleground Global this weekend. Many TvZ are waiting for him (if he doesn't get swept right away)

Man Oz just rolled over in the last game. Happy for Jaedong of course, but he will die to the good Terrans right now, I hope he works hard on his zvt and gets ready to win that damn Blizzcon!
But for now he is through and there is still time .
