Goal difference ala football is not analagous to mapscore in starcraft. A map in starcraft will be won by one person or the other. It's binary. There is infinite permutations of goal difference.

The reason goals scored is the next tie breaker after goal difference is simply to encourage attacking footballl. 4-3 is better than 1-0 to encourage exciting games. Do you see why this makes NO sense in SC2 as a comparison?

It probably has to with the fact that 5 wins 4 loses = 55.56% winrate, 4 wins 3 loses = 57.14% winrate.

This also happened at 2012 DreamHack Open: Summer, Group Stage #2, Group G. 3 way tie between Seiplo (5-3), Mini (4-3), ToD (5-4). Seiplo and Mini advanced.
