The usual: Don't flame casters or players. Don't discuss balance in this or any LR thread. Don't call your fellow posters idiots. Be excited, happy and entertained. |
Well, Flash did well to make it all the way to the finals on the first HOTS MLG.
He needs a bit more time to refine himself even more. Sad that he keeps on running into Life nowadays, but you can't really help it right now. He'll probably meet Life again some time in the GSL Code S soon, so he has to be much more prepared for Life's strong zergling attacks.
The sad thing about the whole finals is that Flash should've known that Life likes to time his primarily zergling-baneling based attacks when the Terran player is taking his third. If he managed to watch a few of Life's games against Polt or Last, then he quite possibly would've been able to prepare for them in my opinion. He couldn't adjust that well and decided to stick to mines instead of siege tanks, which would have been better for him on both those games where he lost from the timing attacks.
Overall, from a Terran perspective, I learned a lot of 'what to do's' and 'what not to do's' from watching this series, though I don't have the mechanics to implement them yet.
Great match.

Im not making excuses but flash looked really tired near the end of that. I know mlg takes a toll on the koreans you can tell all of them were really tired since they obviously are not even awake normally during the hours all the games are played. They dont get any time to really adjust to our hours. Flash would have lost regardless but it could contribute to mistakes or slower reactions. Flash really needed tanks, and I think a part of his losses was kind of lack of experience playing zergs the quality of life. Its a learning experience though I am sure flash will go through those with his teammates and figure out what he needs to adjust and get used to playing hots like everyone else. The cool thing is he can take the replays from those games and resume at any part and play out spots where he felt the game got away or he made mistakes. That is going to be a huge benefit for everyone very good feature.

So this is the new LeeSsangRok.

The only thing this MLG showed in terms of balance is that.. foreign-SC2 scene looks pretty bleak unless they step up their game and start treating their teams seriously.

Yeah, I was having a discussion with my cousin about this. I know some people have said that maybe Korea will always just be in a league of their own and might just have their own tourneys separate from foreigners. Hurts the scene, though.
How are they supposed to step up their game?

How are they supposed to step up their game? Hiring experienced coaches? Training regiments and vigorous training schedules? A team with the same goal? (Like KT team...outside of Flash, they could care less about how they do individually, its always team first, individual 2nd) (EG is somewhat all over the place in that aspect) Getting good practice partners

Makes perfect sense. Is this what BW was like? yep. and to be honest, tbls held the top of bw for way too long. the scene stagnated towards the last few years with very few new talent breaking through. Life is the beginning of the next generation None of the last three OSLs were won by TBLS....

Foreigners also travel too much I think compared to koreans. They have the money to go to many tournaments and tend to use any bit of skill increase to rush off to win money. People that go to korea to train stay only long enough for a boost. Obviously there is a lot more issues than this, but its one possible issue for some like stephano.

Does anyone know if MLG is going to be releasing the replays? (like they used to before?)
|
I wonder how many times the expression "Life Flashed before my eyes" was used after the final
|
Just watched the games, Flash and Life are incredible, look forward to this rivalry!

Sadly I didn't get the chance to see the finals live, but its crazy to see life take the tournament at a time when zergs are struggling so much, that kid is just on another level.

He's found the weakpoints of several HOTS build orders and took heavy advantage on most of them by either going for timing attacks or exploiting the opponent's build orders as much as he can, gaining advantages in resources, tech and army before the opponent even realizes. He's just really good that way.

Is there a reason Flash wasn't using Hellbats?

We saw a ton of Mothership Core + Oracle as well as Hellbats + Widow Mines + Medivac boosts, but we saw a little bit of the Viper and really none of the Swarm Host (to my recollection). The only difference I noticed was that we saw more Hydra Roach, since Hydras get that speed upgrade now. Granted, I didn't watch everything this weekend, but still.
Leenock showcased a few games that highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the swarm host. Check out the series against BabyKnight.
HoTS zerg might not have new units until around hive tech, but there is still the option of getting earlier burrow + ovie speed. Also, buffed hydras and mutas give a lot more options for the mid game. Not necessarily new units, but the buffed hydras might as well be considering how little people used them in WoL.
All in all, i think if Flash was playing at his peak (assuming Life was playing at his peak), then I think Flash could have taken the finals. His lack of experience in HoTS builds really became clear once he was up against an opponent of Life's caliber. Defaulting to the same reactor hellion -> bio mine, and consistently moving out at very bad times. Very little use of speed vacs with success, and almost no incorporation of hellbats into his builds. I feel like he was just using bio/mine as a template because it is popular in the metagame (if you can even call it that). The only other notable series against zerg (ro16?), it was clear he won with better mechanics and late game expo management.
Also, that series against Innovation was very close, and I honestly think that Innovation might have had a better chance at beating Life's playstyle. Unfortunately for him, he had to play Flash, who clearly had better late game mechanics + tactics.

The upgrade required to turn Hellions into Hellbats and vice versa requires the player to add a tech lab to their factory. It's much better to get mines for the earlier stages because of their utility and ability to take map presence.
Hellbats still use armory upgrades too if I recall, so they wouldn't mesh well with a bio force as quickly as mines would. Plus they don't hit air.
If Flash went for a mech composition, he might have had a better chance, as mines, hellbats and siege tanks would have slaughtered everything Life had to offer while Thors, ravens and vikings would take care of mutalisks, broodlords and corruptors. Life would've switched his builds as soon as he spots mech though (but the casters have mentioned that Life DOES have problems with mech Terran). Maybe Flash only practiced for bio mine heavily in this tournament?
Eitherway, Flash couldn't adapt and it cost him the series.
