Thanks for a great tournament, IEM. Personally I decried the choice of HotS over WoL, thinking it would lead to a random, imbalanced end to a tournament half a year in the making. Well, it did, but it also made for a much more interesting tournament than yet another installment of WoL. Good choice, my bad!

This was a good tournament over all and although I like a lot of what HOTS has brought to sc2 the lack of mech in tvp is somewhat ruining my viewing experience. Mech tvp was a goal of blizzard as an option, and although I still have hope we will eventually start seeing it once people get more time to play, watching tvp in HOTS is almost painful for me right now. I would be fine if we had a mix of this bio style with mech but nothing but bio just makes me want to skip over whole matches.

I wonder if maybe tanks could be given an upgrade/alternate mode (like the new Thor) that makes siege tanks shoot EMP's instead of normal shells - with an identical effect to the ghost emp (no damage, but removes shields/energy)

That way Tempests would be crucial for a Protoss to get close, otherwise they would need to by-pass the tanks with prisms/harassment options.

In an attempt to make mech more 'viable' for T v P

Mech is not just constant turtling. My favorite unit in bw was the siege tank and my favorite match up was tvp. I love positional play. tvt mech vs mech is my favorite match up in sc2. It is a play style with plenty of action, highly skill based, awesome transitions in the late game, and it allows legit comebacks.

I didn't learn anything new about balance from this tourny. All the stuff that seemed imbalanced was well known and criticized before. The biggest balance issue is that it's way too easy for terran to delay Zs and Ps third expansion. Widow Mines against zerg are so strong because you need overseers to take your third. That's nothing 'zerg can overcome with 'new builds'. No detection means no expansion and no way to attack the terran. Hellions, Reaper & Window Mine is simply too strong early on and reapers can scout everything zerg is doing pre speedling.

I do like drops and action all over. If I had it my way, instead of nerfing medivac speed, warp prisms would start out with their speed upgrade and nydus worms would be cheaper/quicker to deploy. Maybe I shouldn't say, "instead," as I don't really know how related these three things are in terms of balance, interaction with, and prevention of one another. I just like the action!

so no greedy 3 base openings that are nearly impossible to punish?

Gotta agree here. I absolutely loved Terran in Brood War, I was heartbroken to see how they play in SC2. I find mech far more interesting than bio. I find bio Terran to be god-awful - you can just spam tier one units in every match up, and since they're ranged units, they all control the same (run and gun) on one big fat hotkey. Yawn.

I loves me some good mech play. I wish it was more popular.

Perhaps I am watching the wrong games then. Every time I see someone go mech they sit there with their tanks, turrets and planetaries (only moving out to occasionally raid with hellions) until they are 200 supply and then they either win or lose.

Bio is just so much more fun. Drops, splits and action everywhere!


I think mech is sort of like the protoss ground deathball in WoL(colo, sentry, zealot, stalker, HTs) in that you kind of need all the units there because each plays a specific role and they are much weaker without the other. The only harass units for mech and ground toss is zealot warpins (and HTs drop) and hellion runbys. You won't see 4 colo runbys or 6 tank runbys because these units all need protection. Even blink stalkers don't really move too far from the main army because it is just too expensive if they get caught and then protoss has nothing vs the vikings.
