Actually been following this tournament more than Dreamhack, Mainly because I stay up pretty late, and then sleep in while dreamhack is on. Been really enjoying it IEM. Rooting for Zenio and Grubby!
If Revival can beat VortiX, he has a really good chance of making it to the finals. I want to see Revival win a tournament for once beyond Playhems and other Euro online cups.

For a moment there, it looked way closer than it should've been. Lucifron made a horrible engagement, donated 2 full medivac drops for no reason, and misrallied his medivacs into Sting's army.
Sting either way has no chance of comeback, he is super behind on economy and upgrades. Even if Sting had the greatest engagements of all-time, LucifroN would still be ahead.
The guy knows there's a bunch of SIEGE TANKS waiting for him. Despite that, he doesn't even bother positioning his marines, he was like "zero fucks given", just a-move the whole ball.

sc2 is basically my life. its kind of cool this weekend because dreamhack has been on in the morning/afternoon and IEM at nighttime. also, i thought lucifron was just dead, but great hold there against the 1/1/1. woooo

lucifron really shouldve had his marines at his third instead of the natural. The natural is very wide open and he could easily run back up to defend it whereas the third is much more vulnerable esp after just finishing. meh. sting takes a considerable lead

not to devalue the guy but he is kind of random. Aside from his really great run in TSL4 he hasn't really done much else, and he had one brief appearance in Code A this year. Lucifron had a big lead in the cloud kingdom game but just traded very inefficiently and despite having the better econ for pretty much the entire game he just couldn't get into a good position to kill off stings army.

Well he was on NSHoseo and then teamless, which means Code A was actually the only stage he had available. And a lot of excellent players have bitten the dust in Code A and the preliminaries.
I wonder how much Lucifron has practiced for TvT lately, looking at this tournament/BWC I wouldn't think he would be putting in that much exrat time on the match up.

Their story line is kinda special in that they literally came out of nowhere and started kicking ass at The Gathering 2012. I'm not even sure they were really practicing that much before that, since Lucifron said he stopped playing to focus on his studies. And there's also the fact that they're brothers.
Sting's been around for quite a while, and hasn't done anything too significant at all. The only reason anyone really knows him is because of TSL4 where he did all-ins every game.
But of course, foreigners are still awful compared to random Koreans, which is quite sad.

I never forgot about Sting because a lot of GSL players thanked him for practicing with them in their interviews.

when Lucifron said he stopped playing I think he meant "not as much"....SCII is not something you can just stop playing altogether and still kick ass

TSL4, practice partner for most Korean gosus and he was a KSL regular.
I love the Artosis/Kaelaris combo, funny jokes and great analysis. I watch so many tournaments but this is seriously the best cast I have seen in a very long time.
three games, three entirely different builds from vortix. really switchin it up against ninja, and getting beat by multiple builds in mirror matchups has got to be demoralizing

That was a great game by Zenio! I feel like HasuObs plan is to win through out multitasking with warp prism drops but he can't actually keep up with the multitasking of Zenio. WP!
It didnt really look close at any point there - As opposed to tree.hugger, I really like this patience from Zenio. He has historicly always been a very aggressive player and this has sometimes been to his disadvantage in the form of many thrown games that he should win. When I think back on Zenio's GSL-games, I always remember him getting ahead with clever attack-play, but then botching his advantage with overagression, which makes him look sloppy sometimes.
These games, nothing was left to chance, really minimizing risks and only took clever engagements.
Really need an analytical caster these two are just wrong calls on top of wrong calls on top of entirely vacuous statements. Edit: I recant, PiG is good for a first time caster.

There was lots of intricate micro, very well thought out mind games on both parts and a variety of gametypes (straight cheese, midgame timings, macro, bio, mech). What more do you want???

I do appreciate Stings skill in playing out the series, he made good build order choices and that made Yugioh look bad.
But the games themselves were crap and Yugiohs performance was bad.
g1: Yugioh gets a build order win because Sting is unreasonably greedy g2/3: Yugioh uses an incomprehensible response to 2 rax g4: Yugioh scouts a half assed 2 rax, holds easily and then crushes a bitbybit attack g5: Yugioh botches his counter attack and falls to Stings slick 2 step timing
It was a bad series and neither of them could get past Revival/Vortix

Thats no excuse lol, MC could have rallied a probe to do a few things and immediately went back to his army, you can shift click a probe to go do something right after its done with its mining meaning the probe would start making things while MC was looking at his army. Was just MC not playing well and Grubby hoping for good luck.

Thats no excuse lol, MC could have rallied a probe to do a few things and immediately went back to his army, you can shift click a probe to go do something right after its done with its mining meaning the probe would start making things while MC was looking at his army. Was just MC not playing well and Grubby hoping for good luck.
Yep, you are right. It's a huge risk. It takes a champion to make the decision to take the right risk at the right time, without it you will never win a tournament.

the dts killed most of mc's probes he was down to 10, grubby pulled his probes and just had enough to pull it off, and mc could no longer reinforce because of his poor economy.

MC beat 4 zergs in the group stage, including Vortix, so it's a bit silly to disagree with the fact that MC can beat the rest of the players. That doesn't mean Vortix don't have a chance but MC would still be the favorite.

Stalkers will get lifted and murdered by this many phoenix.
If one player stops making them and the other keeps making them, you win a phoenix battle and then you win the game because you pick up everything on the ground and all their workers with your 20+ full energy phoenix.

MC vs Naniwa (or was it Huk vs Naniwa?) finals at Homestory Cup III was amazing as well.
Beating MC in a bo5 is always impressive. Grubby shows he can definitely compete at the highest of levels. That last game he pretty much outplayed MC with pure decision making and macroing, MC was a step behind the whole game.

Yeah PvZ is a hard nut to crack, for Grubby as well as for pretty much any other toss nowadays. Yet I am pretty sure he can give like everybody still in the tourney a good run for his money
and as much as I love Grubby, MC lost that final game by fighting over the Archons. Grubby was a step ahead by making the Archons, but MC made a -massive- blunder by underestimating them psionic balls

And he was already screaming after his wins even back at his WC3 days when he beat the best of the best too. He became one of them.
I don't think I've ever been so emotionally invested in a starcraft match before. I know I've definitely come close with some Naniwa MLG games or HerO's Dreamhack win.....
But I think this one takes it. Since the first few days Grubby began streaming ~1.5 years ago (already a good 3 or 4 months into sc2 maybe a little more) I remember checking out his stream because of the higher than usual stream numbers for a protoss other than White-Ra. And even tho he was clearly not playing nearly on the highest level, there was still so much to watch. He played very much in his own way even back then. He would lose a lot of games but he would do it in a way that you knew he had near infinite potential. He would then go on to entertain for countless hours on his stream, doing battle with his internet cup rival Stephano and even defeating him once or twice in epic bo7's. Now after all this time, to see him here today realizing that potential is really something special. Just wanna say thankyou to you Grubby and goodluck.
But as I finish writing this it seems it may be a bit premature. Although defeating MC like that in an ace match with both your tournament lives on the line did in fact feel like a finals, there's still 2 matches to go. I have absolute faith that this is more than just possible to accomplish. I actually feel very similar to how I did as Grubby was going into the first game just now against MC. Its a strong optimistic feeling, I know he can do this, and yet incredibly nervous at the same time. Luckily tho Grubby not only appears to be at the peak of his sc2 career in terms of skill, but also at the top of his mental game. Incredibly balls deep strats that you rarely ever see in a high level PvP, especially one so deep into a major tournament. If he can continue the path he's been on then there is no doubt in my mind Grubby will be the next IEM champion. (please dont jynx it. please dont jynx it. please dont jynx it. please dont jynx it.)

Yeh it is really strange. I'm not sure if it benefits Grubby or not. He knows he will have to play a PvZ just the opponent is unknown. Whereas the opponent knows who he will face tomorrow if he wons the QF, but has to do a ZvZ first.
Haha it's kinda amazing to see a player like Grubby who won about everything in his pro gaming carreer already, still be as happy by beating an amazing opponent. The guy has an amazing pasion and true competitors mindset for gaming that's for sure. Grats to Grubby.
And yes the last quilifier tomorrow seems rather unfair for Grubby, he knows that he faces a zerg but not wich one, while both zergs know they will face Grubby if the beat the other. Oh well.

Eh, I'm not sure when the convention is closing but there really aren't that many games tomorrow, and the day should be pretty short. Unless for some reason the convention wants to close much earlier, which they might since it's the last day, or the games go on to the last game for every set, I think we'll have a short day tomorrow!

People always bring up MLG, despite the fact it consistently misses all of the top European players, bar Grubby and occasionally Stephano.
Amazing fucking tournament. So happy that they finally hosted an IEM in Singapore. I hope they continue to do so, its a dream come true, watching high level Starcraft 2 is my passion, and to have such an event in my home? Priceless.

Grubbys first appearence was nasl season 1 which was 12-04-11 while starcraft 2 came out 27-7-10, so he missed out 7 months and the beta (15-2-2010)..

What's the point? Those 7 months he missed don't matter at all seeing the number of patches and the fact that the metagame has evolved since then too.
Didn't he also play quite a bit of WC3 during that time? So it's not like he was a guy who just happened to pick up RTS either. Admittedly most RTS games don't have the same ideas in terms of how you play the actual game itself but basic mechanics aren't bad.

All the kespa players were playing brood war. Not like they were out of practice when it came to RTS either..
I just watched Grubby vs MC on the VODs, found them on sc2casts.com... Hadn't paid any attention to this tournament but O M G.........I am just stunned after this Bo5. If there's any type of match of the year award later, this should definitely be one of the nominees. Such an awesomely fun series to watch.
