MLG is considered a major championship and as long as you have one major championship you're no longer really a kong. On top of that MKP took out DRG who is snow a GSL champion which further legitimizes his championship IMO
Wow you do not know what kong means.
1) This was not a regular MLG. Do you consider Arena of Legends to be GSL? Cause MKP already won that too.
2) Beating a champion in a special event doesn't make it a major championship.
MKP definitely still the King of Kongs.
Your points are terribly flawed. You're right, this wasn't a normal MLG, in fact the field was much stronger than any other MLG outside of maybe Providence. Sure some of the European's and American's made the field slightly weaker but it was still by far the most stacked tournament outside of Korea.
MKP is still a Kong, but only because you need more than a single championship to get out of the kong line (even Yellow agrees with that).
I don't know. To me, any tournament with <50k usd prize money is considered a small event to me. Thats how we know which are the tournaments that really matter like the GSLs or MLG providence.
I don't see how prize pool is more relevant than the skill and size of the player pool. The only argument that I could see here is jet lag but even that is a stretch and all the Koreans were under the same effects more or less.
They're friends, for god sake. Its not like Genius will end their friendship because some taunting. I don't know why people here got so hurt by a friend playing with the other. Chill guys.
Well, you could say DRG is the best player currently but you could also say that for all GSL champs after they just won their GSL. I think we have to remember this is the first GSL that DRG has done well in although he has had great GSTL and foreign results.
I don't think we currently have one dominate player at the moment like during MC, then Nestea, then MVP eras. Several players are all very close to each other like DRG, MMA, MKP, Nestea, Parting, MVP and many others. So the major tornaments coming up will be very interesting with GSL S2, mlg Columbus, iem world championships, iron squid, ipl4. If someone manages to win or get to finals to 2-3 of these, then maybe we will have one dominate player again.

That's exactly what they should be doing.
I'm not sure where to start. Do you watch traditionnal sports?
Oh boy. Continue, please. If you have a point to make, make it - but lose that condescending tone asap.
But if you prefer, I'll clarify - Do I really think they need to make every single little thing sound "the best ever"? No, but I definitely expect them to hype it up, regardless of the reality. I wouldn't expect anything less, and I doubt GOM wouldn't either.
Edit - Or hell - they really could have even believed that it was one of the best finals ever as they were caught up in the moment.
I certainly genuinely think this is one of the best finals ever.

The loss breaks a lot of players, that's why something called the "runner's up curse" was perpetuated as a joke-curse, however it actually does have real impact upon a player. The thought of how close they came can very very easily consume players and rather than practicing afresh they dwell on their loss far more than they might otherwise.
Honestly, I don't think any runner up fluked their way there, yet so few runner up finalists remain in Code S from our history of GSL. There's actually something there perhaps. People talk of the mindset of a champion, and it's definitely a real thing.

Mind games victory goes to DRG, and you can hear in Genius' speech what he thinks about that. Maybe building carriers is a bit BM but doesn't warrant mid game booth BMing. Considering how tight rules are ingame about chatting only reserved to pp and gg. In between game unspoken rules were broken by DRG imo. Going into another player's booth during a finals no less should not be considered acceptable. The gap at the top is so small and anything can affect you at the highest level. It really takes the shine of DRG's victory and first GSL. Now I look at him in a different light.
Felt really bad about that. Lost a lot of respect for DRG.
You could see how Genius was shaken by that
Lol. You seriously are going to use this as excuse Genius lost? And not that DRG played better?
Not really an excuse for the loss, but rather disappointed that DRG somehow took this over the top, disrespected his friend quite a bit in my opinion. A thumbs down in his own booth is something else than going into someone elses and dragging his arms up.
...
Really?
I agree with Xax actually. Friends or not, if I'm one of the sponsors I wouldn't want to see the final competitors trivializing the moment by these sort of antics. If I'm GOM, I wouldn't want them doing it either. Not a HUGE deal either way, but I can see why it would turn some people off.
Yeah I agree as well, this is the Code S finals. It's supposed to be the most important match of their careers and they are messing around after the games, it really ruins the mood.
I don't like teammates in the finals either, it just makes the whole thing seem less important than it is.

I prefer honesty in community.
The honest truth is they'll get fucking fired if they don't apply some spin.
NFL Casters don't get fired for saying "What an epic superbowl! Amazing!" instead of "This is already the greatest finals ever" after three games.
I don't even think they're lying. They acknowledge when finals aren't good, but do you expect them to say "damn that was a crappy finals", no they're just going to talk about something else. Tonight's series WAS excellent.
Nobody asks them to say the finals were shit. They werent, it was fairly entertaining but certainly not "the best finals ever". Sports commentators can spin storylines and plays a little but they dont make obvious lies to hype a product.
obvious lies? what obvious lies? does the world revolve around you now, and that because you didn't like the finals, that is an established fact and tastosis not thinking or saying so makes it a lie i.e. a subversion of this fact?

TvZ, TvT, TvP, all great matchups imo with TvP the worst but still watchable.
Gogo MVP,MMA,Jjakji,Polt!
No Gumiho and Alive?
Not even a MKP.
But yeah, happy we got a PvZ finals. Would unfortunately still prefer a terran in finals since those matchups are so much better figured out as a whole and interesting.
I wonder what the big issue is with PvZ? I wonder if there's a big part of there still not being enough super high calibre Protoss or Zerg players in Korea, whilst Terran can easily list 10 off the bat?
Protoss struggle to harass Zerg in a meaningful way (due to their units being stronger in a ball, and expensive to throw away in small groups), but also have a worse macro mechanic. Also they cross the map very slowly, which means the defender's advantage becomes very big for the Zerg, and he can drone up without fear (against many FFE variations).
Also, Genius still seems to think that FFE->Stargate can work without trickery. Unless the Z is *completely* unprepared, it's fucking worthless to FFE->Stargate due to Zerg getting up to a full economy without any trouble. These builds were phased out of the metagame last SUMMER when P realized that they had to do something different.
But in general, Protoss just struggle to deal with Zerg's macro for a variety of reasons, and even if you cover most of your weaknesses, the one that you leave uncovered is the one the Zerg will exploit for a win.
The winrate isn't *completely* broken though, because if the Z doesn't respond well, he literally can't stand up against the army in the field due to the hard counters that P can put in the field. So if the P forces army engagements at the right times, he can win. That or if he hides an All in and the Z gets caught droning.

Good job DongRaeGu you certainly deserve to be the champion! Hopefully next season we get a protoss champion though, it has already been a year since the last one! DRG Fighting!

Yes, Genius made a lot of mistakes, but like most RTS, games are often decided by the mistakes you do and don't make. I found the games to be highly enjoyable, especially because of Genius's unorthodox play. It's definitely not the worst ever GSL finals, by far.
You're not alone. I loved it. A lot of the games came down to perfect timings from either player. The only thing I really disliked about the finals was Crossfire. I wish they'd stop using that map.
Anyway, DRG! Yes!
I partially agree with this. Loved the series, loved this season of GSL, and I'm glad to see no more Crossfire in the map pool.
That said, I think that last game was the most exciting to watch. Sick finals. Maybe not the best so far, but definitely one of my favourites.
