These 2 players, along with lzgamer are horrible (for progamers). I don't know why EG keeps em around, my only guess is incontrol does other stuff for EG and machine/lzgamer must play for free or something.
This isn't me being a dick either, I'm objectively saying something that can easily be determined as a fact.
Lzgamer probably has banked credit from being in EG the longest from BW days. He's good for that atleast. And he doesn't live in the team house, so less expenses paid for him.
Machine is marketable as fuck, and has a pretty good fanbase because he streams so much, a bit of a cult favorite. He's a very likable character who wont mind being thrown out for team leagues against far better players when HuK doesn't want to play cross. He's great for commercials as well. He's an asset to the sponsors, and thus EG then.
Incontrol is easily one of the biggest names in the game as an ambassador for both the team, his numerous podcasts on SOTG, ITG, etc. He's well worth the money.
All in all, they all have valid reasons to be there.`
Machine had some decent results in 2011. People forget he spent almost the entire year in MLG Pool Play which is solid exposure.
If you watch Machine in their practice sessions, he just isn't very good. I enjoy watching him play and root for him since he is a really nice guy, but that doesn't change the fact that the teamhouse hasn't really done anything to improve the skill of these guys.
Demuslim is like a level above everyone of them in both understanding and mechanical skill, yet even he struggles to get any results these days. The competition is just getting harder and harder, and no matter how many times Incontrol claims that they are practicing really hard over there, I just dont see it in their play at all. I think there just isn't enough pressure/motivation for them to become top level players any more.
Incontrol's stream where he, Demuslim, Machine and then a random assortment of non EG pro's (usually Goswer, Spades) play customs is my most watched stream by far so I know exactly what you're talking about.
I agree that Machine's play doesn't impress me when I watch that but the fact that I and many other watch it is in of itself a reason why Machine is worth keeping around.
A lot of people seem to think ESports is about winning, it's not. It's about sponsor representation, or basically ROI. Incontrol streaming to 2-3k people every single day of the year with his sponsors logos right there on the screen 100% of the time (not to mention SOTG, ITG etc..) is worth more and makes him a more valuable player than random foreigner like Happy, Slivko, Titan, Nightend, Feast where most casual/semi casual fans have a hard time remembering exacting which team they play on, nevermind which sponsors those guys have, even if they are objectively better players.
I'm sure we all agree that in an ideal world it would be like football where an Iniesta who keeps himself out of the public eye and is quietly the 3rd/4th best player in the world is worth infinitely more money than a Balotelli who has less skill but is always in the public eye.
But it's not like that, and Machine is a guy where everyone who frequents this website knows his face, they know his voice, his race, his team, his playstyle, what tournaments he plays in and even his teams sponsors. That right there is ROI and is what makes Machine valuable to a team. Regardless of how good he is at the game.
very, very well put I think when these sponsors are sponsoring teams like EG they're not saying: ' we want 3 players in the top 8 and always want someone in the final. If _________ doesnt win a tournament in the next 6 months if you dont fire him we'll stop sponsoring you' i dont think sponsors give a shit about results. The leader of steelseries couldnt care less that incontrol never won anything, all they care about is the name getting put out there. Have you noticed in incontrol stream chat, or his twitter or fan club or something, there are so many people that say they've bought goods that sponsor EG, like steelseries headsets and mousemats and whatnot. Thats what the sponsors care about, not the face that idra/HuK are in a slump atm

All of these points are surprisingly valid. I think I had a bad case of "speak before you think" when I said that.

Machine has improved since joining the team house. He qualified for IPL3, and was really steady at all the MLGs. His results aren't SUPERB but they aren't bad either.
Terrible take on Demuslim. He is a few levels above machine and incontrol but he doesn't struggle to get results - he GETS results. Look no further Sao Paulo and the Winter Arena.
Furthermore, stuff like the Idra = machine joke is exactly the exposure the sponsors want. Does anyone know what Titan, Feast, look like? No. Who can name Millenium's sponsors? Not nearly as many that know EG is 'intel, steelseries, kingston, monster, beyond gaming, sapphire...' Heck, even I know them and I don't even try to.

Well, I don't think its pointless but its not an amazing tournament either. If they had PuMa, JYP, Huk, Demuslim and IdrA round robin tournament for us to bet on then I think it would be really fun to watch (for me personally). Ofcousre, it'd be really hard to get all those players to do it seeing how busy they are with practice and tournaments. But it would be really cool to watch the best of EG duke it out in some competitive games. I watched IdrA and Huk and loved it but was kind of put off after the machine and incontrol match. But Incontrol and machine casting PuMa vs. Demuslim or JYP vs IdrA or something like that would be nothing short of amazing.
Therefore, I don't think its pointless. Its a chance for fans to bet on matches, win awesome prizes from various sponsors, watch your favorite EG players compete against each other (and not in a tournament!), and sets up some cool stuff for the future. I think that's an awesome idea and would love to see more of this kind of this from the community. In that sense, the concept behind this tournament is quite unique. I'm going to continue to bet on the matches and tune in when I can.
Just watched the match between iNcontroL and IdrA. They should just have deleted those games and do another Bo5. Game 2 was maybe the worst performance by iNcontroL to date, I don't even understand what happened there, or what he tried to achieve. I don't want to watch IdrA vs Machine now...
