4v4 TeamSpeak TL SC2 Open #23 (NA) We're doing something new this week: a 4v4 tournament on the Blizzard 4v4 maps.
Prizes: 1st place team - $200 2nd place team - $100
First, big thanks to TeamSpeak for sponsoring this and the TL Open Series. For the teams participating, please use the TeamSpeak 3 software to communicate with your teammates and help support our TL Open sponsor!
Once you have TS3 installed, feel free to use the official TL server to talk to your teammates:
TeamSpeak has also provided us with an official TL TeamSpeak 3 server which has been running since November 2010. You'll see many TL users hanging out there at all hours of the day, and our staff use it as a place to play team games, watch movies, and interact with the TL community. Check it out!
Special 4v4 Rules
1. Only the team captain registers.. If you have a team of 4 players, make sure only your captain registers, as all contact will go through him. Make sure it is someone who is responsible and will be there the whole time!
2. If you are missing players or can't find one, look through the thread to pick up free agents. At the time of the tournament, we will have an IRC channel (#TLOpen on Quakenet) which will have players looking to join teams.
3. If two teams are set to play and a player is missing, that team will have five minutes to find a replacement. If no replacement can be found, a referee or admin will join the game and leave at the start, and it will be 3v4.
4. Note: you can only play on one team! Don't plan to be on several, that will only delay the tournament. However, if your team loses, feel free to go to the channel and pick up.
For those that haven't participated in a TL Open before, it's a great opportunity to play in a well-run event broadcast by some great commentators. If you'd like to help cast the earlier rounds of a TL Open, feel free to apply here.
Can't find a team? Don't worry! Use this thread to find a team, and if you still don't have one when the tournament starts, go to #TLOpen on Quakenet and teams missing players will look for replacements.
About our Sponsor The TeamLiquid SC2 Open is proudly sponsored by TeamSpeak Systems GmbH, developers of popular TeamSpeak voice chat software for online gamers and now, with their latest TeamSpeak 3 SDK product, virtual worlds and integrated solutions. TeamSpeak enables groups of people to speak with one another over the Internet using their Windows, Mac, or Linux based computer, much like a telephone conference call. Android and iPhone support are also expected to be released in Q3 of 2011. A TeamSpeak user will typically wear a headset with an integrated microphone and connect to his guild or clan's TeamSpeak server to chat with fellow team mates, discuss strategy in real-time, or facilitate online events.
TeamSpeak 3 features include: in-game overlay for DirectX and OpenGL games, simplified permissions system with advanced user toggle, firewall friendly file transfer, BBCode enabled info panes, voice encryption toggle on a per-channel basis, global public web server list, tabbed multi-server connectivity, tabbed text chatting with logging, user avatars, friends lists, offline messaging, and a fully customizable client UI supporting skins, sound packs, and plugins. TeamSpeak is FREE to use for non-commercial entities.

LOL, this is amazing, great way to get all the casuals in to sign up!
Whaaat? This is sweet! Hahaha Going to be so much fun
my goodness o.o supson to do 2v4 please :p
chance of a lifetime cant wait for this one
4v4, lol, this is going to be awesome, so much fun to watch, so much action everywhere
this sounds so interesting.
makes me wonder if koreans will participate lololol
Haha there are like countless threads about how we lack a competitive 2v2 SC2 scene, but TeamSpeak and TL go two steps further and throws down a 4v4 tourney!?! Amazing.
Although the winning team is probably gonna be a quadruple 10pool or quadruple Mango build.
THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER
Mmm... EG should take advantage of its teamhouse: Puma/IdrA/Huk/DeMuslim 4v4 (don't tell me Huk/Puma are in Korea. I want a 4v4 team, not excuses)

We tried quad 7rax a few nights ago and just died to a guy who made hellions
I won't be playing, but looking forward to seeing if any big names sign up for this haha
Shame it's 2am for Australia, not sure I'll be able to get people up for it.
3. If two teams are set to play and a player is missing, that team will have five minutes to find a replacement. If no replacement can be found, a referee or admin will join the game and leave at the start, and it will be 3v4. Isn't this a tactic that people actually use to get extra mins at the beginning for a rush?
LOL 4v4 Can't wait to see the finals
not sure how many big names sign up, might see a few pro team players which just grab 4 1v1 guys and play without much coordination, but it still might be fun to watch
awesome idea, would love to see a teamliquid team! TLO, Sheth, Ret, Tyler haha

You boys and girls best start getting some practice in.
will this 4v4 sc2 open also on EU? Or is this like 1v1, only on NA?
Oh dear god, I didn't think April 1st was here already.
Why does it have to be during college football.... I'll be at the Ohio State game.
OSU CSL might get a team together of people without tickets though.
Lol this is gonna be so baller. White-Ra NEEDS to join because of this.
This is amazing. Monobattles!
Lol, a 4v4 TL Open announcement by Hotbid... looks pretty legit...
Am I dreaming or this is real?!
WOW. This is going to be interesting. I shall watch this.
Do we have to do teamspeak during the tournament, or do we just use teamspeak to support them? They are helping E-Sports, so why not : )
You'll need 4 casters too
LoL. Should have started with 2v2 imo but this is still great
I'll be interested to see if the teams with progamers get very far, or if they'll get knocked out early by high-level amateurs who have much better team cohesion and experience.
I'm hoping that the Fenix-Nestea-MVP-Losira IM Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Foreign Tournament Hit-Squad signs up to own it up.
Awesome, I can't wait to see who will sign up and play in this. 4 Horsemen (Fenix/Nestea/MVP/Losira) sounds like a good team, or maybe CatZ/Drewbie/Destiny/Minigun.
SlayerS vs SlayerS final. Boxer, GanZi, Ryung, and MMA vs. Alicia, Puzzle, Coca, and Sleep. gg.

I predict that protech and his friends or those LMnt people are going to demolish everyone else in this.
When are maps going to be chosen?
Lol, this is so cool! I can't wait to see who signs up and what the results are.
To cast a 4v4 would be sickening. Its the only game mode where my computer will be able to hit a 1 digit fps sadly. I will tune in!
its great to have nice tournaments every week but i dont understand why are you ignoring europe for more than a month now...I thought it would be something like eu-us-eu-us but now its us-us-us-us-us...Can we europeans please have a TL open anytime soon ?
wow this is really cool. I'll see if I can get a team of some of my friends on campus to do this.
Anybody interested in building a monobattles team? PM me!
This actually looks totally legit seeing as its sponsored by TeamSpeak, and voicechat certainly has more utility in team games than in 1v1s
heck yeah, can't wait for teams to pull out the most hilarious strategies
Lol this is going to be like whoever have the best computer wins.
leave it up to TL to liven things up!! so pumped to watch these!!
I'll be watching, just because the mass-cheese we'll see could be amusing.
looks like this will be fun
4v4 will be fun to watch, but i think it will be too many cheese.

i am interested. seeing if a team would like to pick me up :o
I'm so hoping for an EG versus TL, 4v4.
A guy can dream, right?
4v4 should actually be pretty easy for an organized team as long as shared unit control is on. Two players can just focus on macro and let their team mates control the units they are pumping out, the other two can macro a little and but focus more on using the full strength of the combined armies they control.
E.g., player one makes mass speedlings, macros like a boss and techs purely to get upgrades, spare resources between rounds of speedlings can be sent to team mates who need it most. Player two is going marine, medivac, he's semi-teching and doing adequate macro but his main concern is controlling his army output and player 1's mass speedlings. the same would go for players three and four. Most voice communication would be at the start of matches to decide strategies and then between players two and four since they'd have control of the armies.
I look forward to seeing what kinds of crazy goodness comes from this regardless of how teams end up communicating or organizing themselves. ^-^.
Wow, I am eager to see whether some progamers would participate, just for fun, and see how they fare in that unusual format. ^^
DO IT WHEAT!!!! ow and wacksteven ofcourse ^_^
why why why always on NA not on EU
Great ! unfortunately its on the NA damn those region locks ! How much does a NA account cost these days ?

3. If two teams are set to play and a player is missing, that team will have five minutes to find a replacement. If no replacement can be found, a referee or admin will join the game and leave at the start, and it will be 3v4.
It concerns me this rule. This means the 3 man team will still have the 4th base? This is believe it or not, acutally quite difficult to hold off as a 4man team, as the mineral income of the "leaver" is shared with the 3 allies. Therefore the 3man team are forced to mass basic units, and rush like mad. Its very difficult to to stop if the 4v4 map has bases split up and is not on shared base maps.
I would have thought a "walk over" would have been better.
ahah this is so smart too o.o makes me want to try teamspeak!
too bad i'm moving in that weekend. maybe i will muster up a team and neglect all unpacking needs in order to play.
Whyyyyy 4v4? Please use the money to support the 2v2 community and not some useless 4v4.
Bit sad that TL, who has always been an EU based team, always run these tournaments on the NA ladder for some odd reason.
Regardless, I am highly looking forward to this. I would very much like to stress that only shared base maps should be used though, otherwise some races are too weak and the games will just end in super quick rushes.
Isn't 3v4 kinda good for the team with 3 players?
well, as a european, I am alright with the matches taking place on the NA server, since EU -> NA is alright and KOR -> EU is unplayable according to some players (like Jinro). However, I did wish that the matches would start a couple of hours sooner, because they start incredibly late in Korean time (I think past midnight) and go on even later.
cool idea but wrong server as always
Trying to get eight people to show up for each match is going to be crazy logistically. I hope that TL pulls this off because it is going to be great fun. People should be sitting in IRC ready to be replacements. I got a good feeling people will need them.
Is there any way to see what the full teams registered are going to be? Right now you can just see who the captain is going to be. Half the fun is seeing who is registered and who what names are going to be participating.
Great idea! Hopefully more team games in future TLOpens.
ALWAYS F!@#$% NA MAKING ME CRAZY Seems cool. Have never seen a 4v4 tourney before.
Sorry, but my computer cant support this xD, So, im out
If you are GM 1v1 player on any server and interested in playing in this tournament PM me or whisper me on NA under Perseverance.721 or on EU under AiCandyFan.640
Thanks
FINALLY - now some real skilled team players will appear - im not sure about the NA - but the EU 4v4 scene is unbelievable strong - finally i am able to cast again - (missed the last 2 TL Opens :| )
dont expect too much macro tho
Something hotbid might win... so wrong. haha
would love to play in this but I doupt I can make a 4 player team.
Someone pick me :D
I'm expecting Husky + HotBid cast for the semis and finals.
Husky plays 4v4 quite often iirc and HotBid knows all about cheeses. This should be fun.
Something is telling me that it's gonna be cheese all day
I would do it but I have an ACT T_T
i usually don't like playing teamgames that much, but i was so pumped competing in this... if it only were on the EU server... QQ
will be fun though. looking forward to it.
Paging ProTech and friends.
3v4 is a bad idea... the team with 3 players has an early game advantage
imagine 3 zergs all 6-pooling... with all the extra minerals, they'll be unbeatable
I hope you guys will do this more often. I am gonna be campin this weekend, I would love to participate in this. So awesome TL <3

Isnt there something that prevents mineral transfers for the first few minutes of the game?
no one would want me on their team would they? hehe I m Random Masters on both NA and SEA...

CatZ, Drewbie, Destiny, Minigun oh god we can only hope

I'm so fucking excited for this.
I wonder how much there will be team swappings just before finals.
Player A (captain) Player B Player C Player D Player E Player F Player G
While Players C and D might not have enough time (or team captain Player A decides to get "better" players for finale) and Players E, F or G steps up. Who will get prize money then? Who ever participates final only? Or is it given to team captain who then gives out to other players?

there is no extra mineral.. It's 3v4 .. Its not 4v4 with someone leaving at the begining.
Edit: i misread, it is indeed 4v4 with someone leaving in the begining. Dont think its a good idea either!

What he's referring to is that if a player leaves, any income mined by his workers is divided amongst the remaining players. Thus, at the start the 3 players will recieve 1.3x their normal income, making for a 8pool economy with a 6pool timing.
Basically it can be a brutal rush. If the rush fails to kill 2 players however, it's probably game over.

On June 29 2011 15:41 Hot_Bid wrote:TeamSpeak TL SC2 #18 Tournament Details From now on, all TL SC2 Opens will take place on the NA server. We previous stated that we'd alternate servers, but we feel that several factors favor holding it on NA. First, we like consistency, and players wondering each week whether the server is NA or EU (and wondering what time the tournament starts) is not good for the tournament. Second, with the added interest from the Korean server, we want to allow all players an opportunity to play (EU-KR is impossible due to lag). Lastly, and probably most importantly, we receive a lot more signups when we hold the tournament on NA, possibly due to the already large number of weekly tournaments held on EU. In addition, it seems that when we hold it on EU there are a large number of players playing two tournaments or having conflicting commitments. We apologize to our EU members who want to play in a TL Open, but we hope you guys understand our decision. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=238478

If only this was EU doubt all my friends have a NA account, tho reading why it's 100% understandable why NA is chosen. Can't wait to follow this should be mad entertaining :3

Theres an even nastier variant, where you can queue up workers for the player who has left and let a zerg player unqueue them to get the refund. Basically this means the zerg can get a super fast 6 pool with two hatches and speed while his allies continue with normal builds. Its extremely hard to defend against and puts you at a massive tech disadvantage.
Maybe they should replace the missing player with a medium AI
Any progamer expected to register ?

Ahahaha I totally support the use of an AI replacement just to see what it thinks an acceptable 4v4 strategy is.
Should definetly make a TL staff team, Hotbid can be team captain. Hopefully he will develop an intense selection process to make the best team possible.
that will be awesome! mass cheese vs mass cheese! may the best win :>
I'd like to see the top 2 teams from the 2s tournament team up and have at this. ProTech/Power/Wizards1/Wizards2 would be pretty interesting to watch.
WHY IS ALL THE FUN IN NA ONLY .
(Is caps only okay if I was actually screaming that in my room?)
wish it was EU
ohh I love it, TL is the best, have DJwheat and wacksteven comment it, for proper deep analysis of the team game tactics ,P
You NA bastards better show up and make this a good event so they'll give us EU people a 4v4 tourney as well
roooooooooofl this ought to be fun to watch.

I'm looking for a Team !
Diamond 1v1, PLatinum Random 4v4. Plays Zergs
Hit me up if you need a 4th. I'm very versatile and sticks 100% to team strategy. Character Id: DyNaMo Confirmation Number: 630
great idea. I wish my friends would want to join
Need to work on my 4v4 skills. 1v1 is for scrubs! :D
No way there is a 4s tournament :O I love them, i'll defenetly find a team and register in.
Mandatory TeamSpeak login for both teams! Their conversation needs to be in the broadcast! Already 69 teams registered, holy moly
just for shits and giggles, I think they should make this tourney a limited unit league like the funday monday day9 runs.
diamond protoss lf team durrlol 963
I can imagine that casting multiple 4v4s would be pretty tiring for the casters.
Sounds neat, though sadly most of the people I play teams with aren't on until the evening.

As such, there may be an advantage to just get 3 people as they will have a much better economy.
The rule should instead state that if you cannot get enough players, an AI will be set to replace the missing player(s).

IS THIS REALITY?
*nerdgasm*
Can't wait until this Saturday for this. I've been whining a lot on TL about how the 2v2 scene is being neglected (see my 2v2 discussion thread).

This should be awesome haha. I think team games have a lot of entertainment and cool styles in their own right and should be showcased more often

If players are worried about 3v4 they can easily have one of their teammates quit at the start too, that way its 3v3...
Just a thought.

I'm concerned about really special tactics that can potentially happen... especially this scenario....
You begin 4v4 and suddenly 3 players leave at the beginning of the game... and the 4th player stays and cannon rushes every1 else. Since that one player will have 4x economy at the beginning, ridiculously fast cannon rushes is made possible.
That kind of tactics I hope we don't see in the tourney but I'm sure some1 may read this and become inspired to do such a dirty tactic.
This is gonna be amazing.
There's so many ridiculous strats you can do in 4v4, no one explores them because they just assume the entire playstyle is "EXTREMELY IMBALANCED".
The team of death would have to be Idra, Puma, Demuslim, and Incontrol that would be an unstoppable team. Hopefully they sign up, but probably not since they're most likely all focusing on actually getting better. But since this sounds like fun hopefully I can convince a few friends to make a team with me.

I hope the casters will get a few extra observers to help them find the action, it´s going to be very complex battles, it´s hard to keep track of.

That kind of tactics I hope we don't see in the tourney but I'm sure some1 may read this and become inspired to do such a dirty tactic.
These type of insane rushes sound good in practice, but even if you manage to take out 2 players with these type of cheesy plays, the other two players will often just roll through with a powerball and bulldoze your entire team down.
I say bring it on kiddos. All and any of your cheeses - We're ready for ya

btw, what is 12am or 12pm? this kind of presentation seems very confusing and retarded. couldnt you use something like 11:59 or 12:01 to avoid the confusion?

This is a really cool Idea! I will definitely be participating. A team liquid team would be so cool. I also want to see a team of casters like Day[9], Husky, Artosis, and Tasteless!

Hah, would be cool to see Ret and Sheth on a team again. They did really well in the PTSL considering they had no idea what strategies were even good in 2v2.

nice =) i think casual guys have relatively good chances if they develop a good team play. the professional players are not that good in team games - they simply don't know what to do =) big names will still probably win, but there will be some competition to them from lower leagues =)

My computer cant handle maxed army in 1v1 i think it might melt or move very slow in an epic 4v4 unless we quadrupled 6 pooled lol.

Wow.. TL wants to give Protech and co. a TSL win :|
Do winners get a TSL seed too?

Really cool idea! Does any good player want to pick me up on their team? I am a high masters Protoss random 4s player. I was ranked as high as #84 in the world a while back, before I stopped playing for a bit. Here is my profile. My winning percentage isn't pretty nowadays since I've started to mess around in my games, but I promise that I am decent :D
Edit: please PM me or msg me on bnet. XephyR.172

Could ProTechs team register while he's banned? Good thing it was only for 2 days and he'll still have time :p
This is going to be great Thanks for organizing this guys!

I have some questions.
1. Does the team captain have to play on his team?
2. The team captain can use anyone for his 4v4 team and switch up his line-up between rounds? What about between games in a Best of series?
To clarify with example, let's say I am W, and I manage Clan X. We have 8 players, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H.
W signs up as team captain. Does W have to play on his team, or can his team be A, B, C, D?
For round 1, he sends in A, B, C, D. For round 2, he can switch it up and send in F, G, C, D, right? And so on?
Same question for between games in a BoX series.
Because from this rule:
If players are missing, the team without 4 players has two options:
1. Five minutes to find a replacement player in #TLOpen
It sounds like we can use whoever we want for our team regardless of who played in it in previous rounds, with the exception that we cannot use players who are on other teams at the moment.
Also, it isn't clear whether the team captain must play on his team.
Thanks!

Awesome idea.. dont usually watch these but I will tune in

Can we name our teams?
^Very important question.

yes, it still completely makes sense when people wants to start a competition over the night, starting from 23:59 Saturday to the dawn when most people is going to get a off on Sundays. there have been lan parties going through midnight and starting competitions late in the night or the nerd hours. Having times like 23:59, 11:59, 12:01 p.m. would of course put away this kind of ambiguity. 12:00 a.m. indicates nothing and it would be well improved by saying noon or midnight.
While computers and digital clocks display "12:00 a.m." and "12:00 p.m.", those notations provide no clear and unambiguous way to distinguish between midnight and noon. It is actually improper to use "a.m." and "p.m." when referring to 12:00. The abbreviation a.m. stands for ante meridiem or before noon and p.m. stands for post meridiem or after noon. Since noon is neither after noon nor before noon, and midnight can equally be twelve hours before and after noon, neither abbreviation is correct (although the length of the error is determined by the smallest unit of time — 12:00:01 p.m. would be correctly notated).
The most common ways to represent these times are, (a) to use a 24-hour clock (00:00 and 12:00, 24:00), (b) to use "12 noon" or "12 midnight", although unless the person is referring to a general time and not a specific day, "12 midnight" is still ambiguous, (c) to specify the time between two successive days or dates (Midnight Saturday/Sunday or Midnight December 14/15), and (d) to use "12:01 a.m." or "11:59 p.m." This final usage is common in the travel industry, especially train and plane schedules, to avoid confusion as to passengers' schedules.[2]
from the wikipedia.
surprisingly disappointing. even if it is unlikely to happen, there is still a chance to happen. thats why a clear use of words and definition is important.

also from wikipedia:
The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (Fourth Edition, 2000) has a similar usage note on this topic: "Strictly speaking, 12 a.m. denotes midnight, and 12 p.m. denotes noon, but there is sufficient confusion over these uses to make it advisable to use 12 noon and 12 midnight where clarity is required."[14]
lawyered.
ps: advisable =/= necessary. when dealing with the general population then sure, but when trying to deal with intelligent people then 12pm is acceptable
Starts 18.00 CEST.
I don´t understand why the 12h clock is still in use, it´s an outdated system.
Hoping for a few macro games in-between the rushes. The synergy between races will be more interesting with all races there, so we can see a Hydra+Medivac+Mothership+Voidray combination.

Its interesting that as of the time when I made this post, there doesn't seem to be a single korean captain listed as registered. The vast majority of the captains is predominantly North American. Note that this may change and this information listed in this paragraph may become irrelevant.
I would love to see a professional team sign up for this and show their stuff in 4v4... and better yet know if the micro/macro abilities of such players in 1v1 will make a huge difference in a team-based format... especially the madness you see in 4v4.... there is still time left for some1 from EG to join.

Just wondering, has there been some kind of change in Blizzard's stanceo n the colour mod, or is TL just risking the account ban thinking it's probably safe or what? Either way it's really making this tournament really easy to follow so it's awesome.

other tourneys have used them without sanction, i think every iccup stream i watched used it. i think blizzard knows that if they initiate some kind of action against streams using colormods that backlash would be far too huge to justify it.
but then again, blizz does whatever the fuck they want

GLRiChY is actually protoss, and plays mainly 2v2 (but hes pretty solid 1v1 too). He off-raced zerg for this tour. I think youre confusin him with GLSnute, his 2v2 partner - who is one of the better zergs out there.

Didn't even get a good chance for a good game since a dozen lings slipped past a loose wall-off into my other 2 allies' bases. Good to know that we lost against finalists.

I think if we want more team game tournaments we have to be active in getting the streams more viewers. Whenever you hear about a 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 event be sure to let all your friends know about it and have them tell their friends as well.

I feel the same way. I noticed that at the start of the stream there was around 2000 viewers but by the end there was over 3500. I think if the semi finals and finals were a BO5 (Since the games are kind of short) that it could of topped 5000 viewers.
That being said I don't know how many people normally tune into the TL Open so it still could be quite a few less. Only time will tell though.

Think we woulda had a better chance on a different map, our strat revolved around splitting them up and doing damage individually, on megaton they are so close together its easy to defend.
was a good idea, would love to play a 4v4 tourny again, for us we had 2 games that we won easily against teams with no strategy, then lost in ro32 to the winners, so an average tourny (for our team), but a lot of fun potential!

It would be so awesome if these types of tournaments could be a regular occurance.. you know.. like if battlenet supported and allowed for easily arranged tournaments

If you plan to do something like this again, 2v2/3v3 or 4v4 I suggest you cast from quarter finals because games are too short (or at least have someone check quarter final reps and pick good ones to cast if you cant cast all 4 series in quarter), but anyhow it was really fun playing it
