People in the NASL now can't enter the qualifier.

lol @ $10 entry fee. Very few if any other online tournaments have had entry fees, with similar sometimes larger, sometimes smaller prize pools than this. I'd hate to see other tournaments start charging for entry into their "open tournaments."

At people saying they don't want to make money...uh...they do want the money out of your pocket, that's why they have the gaul to make it $10 entry.

Anyways...I think it's a pretty bad idea, especially with how people will be seeded or not seeded. They will handpick seeds, just like they handpicked the original first 50 nasl people...

How will seeding work exactly?

Avilo, I promise to sponsor 20% of your entry fee, or two whole dollars. All you have to do now is find four other strangers to give you two dollars and you're set.

As a primary sponsor, I expect some form of brand recognition. Preferably my name drawn with a black sharpie on a t-shirt you found in a dumpster behind the 7-11.

His issue isnt that he has to pay 10 dollars, its that nasl is arrogant enough to charge money for an online tournament, setting the standard that charging for tournaments is acceptable when in the past it hasnt been. If you offer to pay 20% of everyone that wants to play then you can start talking

You may consider an entry fee arrogant, but do you know what I think is naive?

Thinking that $10 is an outrageous fee, for a $100,000 tournament.

Just imagine for a moment the capital and operating expenses to run a single season of this tournament. The staff. The equipment. The studio space. Travel and accommodation. Administration. Event space. Food and entertainment. And of course, the prize pool, a huge and untouchable pot of money that represents a significant risk.

How much do you think someone like InControl or Gretorp deserves to be paid? What's their salary? Even if they were making only $2000/month -- or close to minimum wage -- the maximum amount that could be made of this online tournament wouldn't cover their salaries for 1 season.

You would have to run 20 open online qualifiers before you made a profit off of them. The fee obviously exists to deter 14-year-old Silver and Gold leaguers from wasting people's time, as well as offset some of their own expenses.

NASL is not unique in regards to entry fees. MLG has already set a worse precedent, where you can essential 'buy' points in their point system for $7 dollars. Now THAT is silly.

Once NASL starts charging a $100 entry fee, than we can start talking. But $10 is hardly a malicious or exploitative fee in the grand scheme of things.

If someone feels they have a chance to compete in the NASL then the $10 fee is a non-issue.

Also, this isn't exclusively an online tournament, since there is the NASL finals portion of it. I'm assuming the players in the groups or their teams had to pay something for entry? I don't really see the difference if that is the case.

I don't understand how this has gone 13 pages of talk about fees. If you can't or don't want to pay then don't. for those talking about setting a precedent for other tournaments for having fees for entry, that would mean another league with massive prize pools. I'm ok with that surprised everyone else isn't

Is anyone here actually planning on participating?

I won't because I suck at SC2, but it would be nice to get this thread back on track.

I'm not sure what people were expecting. NASL announced from the beginning that there would be a small fee to enter the tournament.

The Open Tourney winner has a one in sixteen shot at $100,000, or a $6,250 share.
The eight that qualify for next season have an eight in fifty shot at $100,000, or a $16,000 share.
So even if 1,024 enter for $10,240, the prize equity is still larger that the entry fees.

Xeris.

June 20th will clash with the last day of Dreamhack Summer SC2 tournament (June 20th). Dreamhack is June 18th-21st.

Please move it to start on the 21st or 22nd. Dreamhack is a major event. I don't understand how it could benefit NASL to have one of its qualifiers for top16 as well as for next season clash with a major event.

I'm pretty certain you would never consider putting this sort of a tournament on the last day of let's say an MLG-event. Where none of the members in the organisation you represent would be able to play -- whereas 90% of the europeans would be available (not many players get sent to transatlantic events, whether it be euros or americans who have to do the travelling).

Just to add, on top of travel stipend, top 16 get $500 (top 8 $1000 etc). So the open prize is essentially $1,000, assuming the player loses outright. Could be higher depending on placement of course.

Basically, NASL will make $10,240(given that all slots are filled) and pay top 2 finishers $500 each if they decide to go to the NASL Grand Finals...

Again, why are people whining... if it bothers you that much don't pay, there are people who can do the math and figure that it's worth it.

This.

We really don't want 8 non-top pro players qualifying for next season because of a confliction with Dreamhack when we could have players like Thorzain, Kas, Nerchio, Adelscott, all the Koreans attending Dreamhack, etc... qualifying.

Actually, just comparing 8 people from Dreamhack to 8 people signed up here so far:

DH: Naama, Nada, Fruitdealer, Kas, Dimaga, MarineKing, Thorzain, Adelscott
Here: Avilo, Desrow, Demuslim, LzGamer, Killer, Pokebunny, Minigun, StrifeCro

There is quite the difference.

I don't know why everyone is still upset over the $10 reg fee... that's really not a big deal. I'm more concerned about other things:

1. Week long tournament with matches everyday at 1PM? North American Star League my ass.

2. No information on seeding besides "it'll probably be seeded." Seeding in a single elimination tournament with top 8 spots qualifying is insanely important.

3. Clashes with Dreamhack.

Xeris, as an NASL subscriber and fan, I would also hope there is a way to accomodate the Dreamhack participants, particularly if it is only a matter of offsetting a tournament by one day.

They're obviously great players. Perhaps if there is less than 1024 participants, you can seed them in a manner that they have walkovers/by's for the early rounds, so they don't have to participate the first day. It's not entirely fair to all the participants, but as a fan I wouldn't raise a stink about it.

Just an idea.

The "one round each day" setup seems rather annoying for players. Wouldnt it be better to split up the qualifying brackets in 4 parts? Play one part each day, which each gives 2/8 top8 players. After 4 days you have the 8 players ready for next season. And on the 5th day, play the final 8 for the final spot. All players would only have to commit to 1day each (depending on bracket part) plus the final day should they reach top 8.

Tbh i think that would be more interesting as a viewer too, all days would hold some really important games.
