It's a way to keep more viewers. Most things do it this way. If they played the best games first, everyone would just leave instead of watching the less desired game. If they put the good games last, there is more of a chance of people watching the whole broadcast specifically to see those later games rather than just tuning in for 1 match.
I tuned in just for something to watch, I guess right as the first game between Strelok and Dde was starting? My god. Who are the casters? I had to mute it. I know the early game is tough to cast in an entertaining way, but there was a point where one guy finished a sentence with "competition" and the other guy went "mmmm." And then they did that 3 times or something. Pretty obnoxious. :x I'd really prefer that people try to guess what sort of tech or whatever people are going for based on their early decisions. Way more entertaining.

Hey, now NASL have a real ad cut, with multiple ads (like TV again :p) Doesn't surprise me, made the math some days ago and at their precedent ad rate they made only like 600$/broadcast, which is nice but far from enough is they don't have any other income. (they have subscribers but that's not a lot of money). I guess NASL should be viable, they should earn nearly exactly 100k$ for the first season (and more if they start broadcasting more ads). Nice

You are right that there is no reason not to bring them back, unless they are about to build something else, but i think they are just not thinking sometimes in tournaments like this. It is really easy to make mistakes under pressure.

Most pros do it, even I do it. What most pro, including koreans don't do actually, is selecting only their scvs when pulling them to fight. Usually they box they mules too, which doesn't make any sense and cut in their income a lot more than if they pulled scvs only with a double click and not a box.

Sure, but it should just be a mechanical thing that should take less than 1/5 second and should be drilled into them from every single game they play. Little things like that which take zero skill or decision making and is simply a mechanical thing that can't be forgotten because it's literally an immediate thing (which separates it from making SCVs or something which can be impacted by stress or focus on other things) should just be done every time.
Oh man I can see squirtle taking first now with Naniwa/Strelok fighting for 2nd, ahhh this sucks I'd rather Strelok and Naniwa take 1st and 2nd respectively
You can tell neither of the commentators play Zerg; that move was insta-win by Squirtle to be honest. Getting out means he's hugely behind on economy and he'll lost a lot of army breaking out anyway.

the commentators need to try and make it look like the game still has the chance to go on lol
Zerg can win from that position, but you need a macro hatch in base. That way you can muscle up units/tech to break out without cutting drones at 20. As soon as you get out you can immdeiately saturate the next base, or go roach ling and punish him.
It's obviously disadvantageous, but macro hatch really helps in my opinion.

Maybe he was trying to actually participate in the actual fight... lol, clearly his mistake.
I was referring to all the units slamming their faces against a wall of forcefields while colossus raped them rather than pulling back and waiting for them to go away. It was a tough position regardless though, he played amazingly to even have a chance in that game.
And 11 roaches on the way (a little too much imo, supply problem so no lings) Will hit at 7:50 and Squirtle has nothing but some sentries. But bad execution from slush, too much roaches, no ling speed, and no ling at all.

It really depends on the build you are going for. If you're going ling heavy, it could be a good idea, but with the heavy roach style Slush was going for, he wouldn't have really been able to support much more than 1 hatch-queen production.

The bigger problem was going basically mass roach against a largely blink stalker army

Squirtle actually opened stargate that game.
Yeah he should have died without any canons if slush had made the roachling build correctly.
Slush' attack was really, really bad. He took the shields off the nexus and that's it. It was pretty obvious he wasn't gonna be able to kill the nexus. He could have easily picked off 4-5 probes and a couple pylons though. ;(
mass roach works vs protoss but only if you're already ahead and play hyper aggressively. Slush wasn't ahead because his first roach attack did nothing, so he was playing catch-up, and catch-up with roaches is damn hard.

and terrible engagement positioning.
The one where the colossi were still alive? It looked bad but he got all but like 3 of his roaches out with burrow move and then killed the colossi before the stalkers killed all the corruptors (freed up supply for ground army, better than having corruptors against blink stalker imo)
The second engage positioning was fine considering
my guess was he was frantically trying to micro away his drones thinking the banes were going into his main and moonglade cleverly went back down for the lings
Well, guess that's that. I never thought I'd say it, but PvP is no longer the worst match up.

True. Misspeak, my bad.
Np maybe a bit too nitpicky here just didn't think it was auto loss. If haypro had managed to get the 2 queens on the ramp to keep lings and banes out he might have been able to outproduce moonglade. ZvZ is very bad. but i wouldnt call it to coin flippy imo. Dont open hatch first and your fine. If their hatch doesnt go down at the standar time for a pool first build, get ready for a all in. The coin flips come mid game imo

You do lose to a hatch first just cause a spine and defensive baneling will stop your all in, and if you can't act fast then you will be so much behind it is not even funny....personaly I like gimaga's ZvZ style, fast expo into lingspeed and make like 20 of them with 20ish drones and then use those lings offensivly, if he goes fast bane nest you go for roaches and a spine or two, however this requires dimaga status multitasking (check July vS Dimaga baneling war where Dimaga went hatch first and july went for fast baneling).

That push after the blueflame made no sense from kawaiirice. he sacrificed tech and army with the blue flame to kill probes to even up the harvester count so he can expand on even terms. He spent money on an expo, tech and the hellions, so it makes no sense to attack right away. It would've made more sense to attack with hellions while attacking the front.

Younger audiences would be.. shocked. More mature audiences would be offended. The only people still watching would be the only only people watching right now. Therefore slowing growth by limiting the wider audience. I would never recommend anyone to watch NASL or anything with Gretorp casting.

What would happen if I try to expand NASL audience maybe to people who've never watched SC2 before and he says something as stupid as that on air? So inappropriate. I would be embarrassed and NASL would be put to shame.
People like you need to stop pretending that video game casters should be so uptight. This is entertainment for a bunch of teens and people in their 20's. It's not like they are casting a golf match.

Who cares? Nasl is for people to enjoy, not "grow esports", if you don't like it then dont watch it. It's ok to not like things.
While i think the guy raging about innapropriate comments is a retard. If you dont think nasl(whos in it to make money) doesnt want to grow their audience....idk what to say.

Much much more likely that he simply doesn't prepare for many of his online games. He's had his ups and downs, sure, but it's probably been as his studies have become more or less of a focus. When he's well prepared he's a force to be reckoned with; when he loses blaming it on lag probably isn't appropriate, nor is concluding that Nada is awful. The better player for the format wins on the day; Haypro beat Nada when they were both playing from Korea, remember.
That's not to say the lag doesn't affect Koreans, because it definitely does, but proper preparation limits the impact and it's a shame to take away from players victories by blaming it on lag.

Yeah not saying that lag is the only factor...just that Nada clearly plays much worse online than he does on lan regardless of the factors involved. Which is prolly a combination of lag + preparation

All games are played on NA server so it doesn't really matter that haypro was from there. It's not only lag, it's also the time the games are played. You definitely shouldn't downplay the winner but you can easily bring reason into why nada isn't playing like, well, nada.

No but I'm saying since the games were played on NA there is still lag, which obviously hurts Nada bad(and arguably time of the day). It has nothing to do with Haypro. Of course he deserved the win and they were on even ground, but that doesn't make nada's situation any different than this game right now.
Pulling the colossus back like that to defend them from the vikings isn't always a good idea: it means they aren't doing any damage for a while, and marine/marauder will annihilate a gateway ball without the colossus dps. You basically have to sacrifice the colossus a lot of the time to just do as much damage as you can, hoping your gateway ball will be strong enough after the fight is over.
I wish terrans would micro their medivacs more its a small thing but with 1 control group syndrome they make their medivacs spend so much time flying and it seriously cuts down the amount of healing they're actually doing
Damn, why did naniwa keep attacking through that back path? Nada always had the concave there, if nani wanted to attack he should've just went through the middle.
Why is Nada even in school now? He is clearly good enough that if he focuses only on SC2, he will do well for himself, and then after all of that he could go into coaching or some other position in esports... or even just go back to school. I don't get it...
People are asking why naniwa kept attacking through that back path???? It's because of his force fields. He had really good ones that take advantage of the terrain. However Nada outplayed it.

He got in some decent harassment on one of the geysers, and if Nada had been a bit too eager to engage it could have ended well for Naniwa with some good forcefields IMO. But Nada played pretty patiently in dealing with the pushes and making sure all his engagements were good, and sometimes just had to just give up the Refinery and a couple SCVs to ensure that.

Was thinking the same thing. All of the zealots were in the back and didn't even more deeper in, nothing. Bad collo control on top of that and just bleh.
Naniwa had 200 suppply in that battle. I don't think you can just keep going colossus once the terran gets 8+ vikings. He should have transitioned to HT earlier IMO.
On May 21 2011 12:50 jmbthirteen wrote: How did Nada do that?
Nani anti-microed his colossi, letting them get shot whilst not doing any damage of their own. He also trapped all his zealots behind his stalkers so the stalkers melted to the marauders.
In both games Naniwa ran his colossus away during the big battle while his stalkers focused the vikings but his entire army was melted by Nada's. Far better to just let the colossus do their damage and die than to have them live slightly longer but contribute nothing to the battle.

He exploited Nanis weakness and engaged at a terrible angle when he saw it was actually to his advantage when the collosi didn't engage. (and he did other things like the forge snipes)

Naniwa engaged the army about as poorly as he could. All of his zealots were in the back, he had poor surface area, his ff's didn't go so hot, and he had bad colo control. Just 100% bad.

At the engage at Nani's gold he had around 10 chargelots stuck behind his entire army. He was clumped in a super tiny ball that wasn't enagaged properly.
I'm glad Naniwa lost. Have a little showmanship and make high templar for once instead of 80 sentries or colossus please. Colossi are boring, and they suck too.

what? really?
Correct.
Resources are only lost if the upgrade is a structural one, like upgrading a planetary or a hive. Research upgrades are treated just like units - all the money is refunded.
Very great play sniping the double forges TWICE. Even if Naniwa didn't push for that final engagement, Nada would have finished him off easily when 3/3 hits (~20s left) vs Nani's 1/1.

Their armies were also remarkably even, it was 170 to 200 and Naniwa had a LOT more probes as well as a ton of money banked. His big advantage wasn't in that particular army, rather it was in his ability to reinforce and he totally threw the game with an awful engagement giving Nada really good army retention.
Well those games were good examples of how important positioning is...Nani with terrible terrible positioning in both games, losing from a lead both times.

Ah didn't even see that
That's not 100% the reason though, the colossi all dying without actually dealing any damage is problematic too

Could easily let his empty base die instead of losing a max army in a horrible engage and still be way, way ahead and only an orbital at the gold which could be taken out later. (keep in mind that Nada abandoned his geysers in his main to do that too!)
Naniwa's army control was horrible. Don't know what was going on with him, but he seems to have tilted hard core after the first game. His colossi did no damage to the marauder army, his stalkers got melted, his zealots weren't attacking, and his FFs weren't doing anything because his colossi weren't attacking.
Nada got supply blocked a few times and also got his army caught in FFs a few times, but nothing like the mistakes Naniwa made.

It's an amazingly tough choice sometimes. The first game should have tipped him off, though.
He's running off one robo, losing colossus is ridiculously painful if his army could handle the terran. He must have thought it could, so he pulled back. Then he rejudged it, and moved forward to try to hit again, but by then he only had 4. The vikings were just tearing through them regardless.
If his colossus were wiped, his gateway force could not compete with MMM. So his initial decision to pull the colossus was a bad one.
thought naniwa would take this series. nada played well though, really showed his intelligence. I liked the float to the gold and the snipe on the forges. would have liked to see some templar tech, he had more then enough time/resources to do it.

Chargelots are easily kiteable by stimmed marauders. The zealots charge ahead of the protoss ranged units, get off one attack then get kited, while the ranged units at the back don't get any hits off.
Chargelots are mostly for absorbing damage from the stalkers, sentries and colossus.

Gateway force can totally compete with MMM when you have good upgrades and the terran has a zillion vikings. Forge snipe made a big diff there.

Naniwa's Force Fields didn't help him too much - the Colossi weren't able to engage enough before they died.
Yeah, still frustrating to see though, because Nada didn't have to do anything but 1a into that choke.
Unfortunately with forcefields, terran doesn't have as much of a choice. You could see that over and over, where Nada could not capitalize because of the forcefields.
That was also another mistake for Nani, he had WAAAAAAAAAAY too many sentries in that composition, so his gateway forces just died so fast vs the marauders while his colossus was dancing.

No doubt that factored in. Also, he probably thought he would end up better off, enough to just wait for his next set of warp ins to replace his gateway units. Just a bad call there.
Anyway, nada bio micro is not spectacular like MKP, but he does subtle things, even in TvT when he dives marines into siege tanks but make very good split. He did again vs colossi today, he selected 2 or 3 MM that were focused and moved them forward so no splash occur. And he repeat that move each time, he's amazing, when I try to do this everything dies before I react :D

Trying to give him an excuse. Otherwise that army control is unacceptable for a player of his caliber. He literally did EVERYTHING wrong that fight.

This is exactly correct, attempting to keep them alive against a large terran army often causes your entire gateway army to die very quickly, and you wind up with a couple of colossus against a huge terran ball.
Hmmm I do wonder what would have happened if Naniwa just sacrificed his collossi to kill as many ground forces as possible and ignore the vikings (as it is his collossi ended up getting destroyed for nothing anyways). But I don't think he would have been in a great position even if he did do that cause of the upgrade disparity.

Once the viking count gets high enough that they one shot them, yes. Then rebuild with templar. Colossi become crap once the viking count is high :/

I think the problem with Game 1 was that Naniwa didn't get Zealot charge.
And Game 2 (while the forge snipes were important), Naniwa messed up that battle at the gold big time. Had his Zealots behind his Stalkers so they couldn't charge in. Also think he could have gotten storm before expanding to the Gold.
Thinking about that engagement at the gold base...I can't decide if the preferable option would be to suicide-engage the colossi to kill as much as possible (knowing he'd just killed off the terran gold), or to just sacrifice the gold base and fall back (for the same reason).
Tough call either way, and Naniwa is normally good about making these kind of decisions. Seems like he just kind of froze between the 2, which ended up in him losing the colossi, the base, and most of his army. Rather unfortunate.

The way I see it is: Naniwa had just sniped Nada's gold and saw Nada going for his gold. He moved his units around and naturally the faster stalkers got in front. He knew he had the bigger army and the better economy so decided to just 'attack'. And then his whole fkn army died and he lost a game he could have won quite easily.
Should have let his gold die and position his army correctly. If he fights Nada he wins, if Nada backs down he wins even harder. But ... shit happens

Except he didn't just 'attack.' He tried to micro his colossi backwards against 20 vikings and they did not shoot at the marauders, so he ended up losing all his stalkers to marauders while blocking his own zealots while FFing out the marauders so that his zealots couldn't attack even after his stalkers died.
He did nearly the worst battle control possible short of moving his army past his opponent's army without firing a single shot. That's why the fight came out so lopsided.
Naniwa's PvT is not nearly as solid as it might have seemed from his win streak in MLG. His loss against Thorzain, and this time against Nada, appears to show that he still has quite a bit to work on in this MU.
FIrst of all, fantastic games today, thoroughly enjoyable. They ranged from the sublime (the Nada series) to the ridiculous (30 odd gatherers at 20 minutes due to a failed cannon rush into cannon contain).
But, given that Gretorp called out the obnoxious pedantic forum types on this issue, I'll have to come forward as requested.
Transpose is indeed a term used for chess, but chess actually just makes good use of the normal meaning of the word. Its meaning is to alter the order of a set or series of things, or alter the position of a thing in a series. In the context of chess it refers to the fact that there are many different standard sequences and openings which lead to the same position.
This is actually a very useful term when applied to starcraft, as you can employ both different specific tactics and strategies in the form of build orders, army stances and movement, to reach the same position, and in turn those positions afford a number of different other transpositional possibilities.
That isn't how Gretorp uses the word the vast majority of the time. He uses it as if it is merely a synonym for transition, or change, which it isn't. It can't just refer to any adaptation or change, especially ones that a player has forced on them.
Anyway, even I've reached the limit of my pedantry at this point.
Once the vods are sorted out, which I'm sure they will be, NASL will have become a reasonably solid presentation with a lot of room for growth in coming seasons.
A quick aside... In order for NaNiwa (3-3, 3pt) to grab one of the automatic spots in Division 3, he needs NaDa (4-2, 3pt) to beat Squirtle (5-1, 6pt), then lose to SLush and Axslav, and for Squirtle to lose another set to dde. This is mostly because Strelok (5-1, 4pt) essentially has an lock on his grand finale spot, with only SLush, KawaiiRice, and HayprO remaining.
If Squirtle beats NaDa, there's no permutations where NaNiwa gets the automatic spot. If I am NaNiwa, I'd be regreting skipping out on week 1.
On the bright side, he'll likely be the number 1 seed in the playoffs.
I have to say, the Naniwa vrs Nada games where not what I was hoping for. They were both almost the same game twice in a row, and I didn't really feel like they were up the caliber of game that I was expecting given the names that were playing
i think naniwa is a great player but not that good as everyone think, that hype of going 26-2 on mlg was against good players but not vs top notch players, he also had an "easy" path on the TSL bracket, lets see how he does on the next mlg.

wow, your post is hurting esport. For esport's sake you should stop posting. You prevent the growing of esport.
Anyway, is "crabs" having a different meaning in english ? In french, crabs are delicious crustaceans. Does this means something else in the growth of esport sense ?
Lol crabs mean "delicious crustaceans" in English too
I missed the live reference, but I think Gretorp was referring to the STD.
Gretorp was actually describing an "ancient chinese secret" on identifying the gender of crabs, because generally speaking female crustaceans are more meaty and delicious. What you do is flip it on its back and take a look at the abdomen flap. The female's is rounder than the male's.
Male
Female
Unfortunately the rest of us are rather juvenile about it.

That's hardly an upset. I got downvoted to hell by the Reddit circlejerk that is r/starcraft when I said foreign players still aren't as amazing as Korean players. What I mean is that while they compete well and probably have players who would do really well against Korean players, but giving Naniwa short odds over NaDa is going a bit too far.

Its pretty much a false promotion. Its showing that he doesn't give a shit about the product and just wants their money. It is far more harmful than anything Gretorp has said. Listen to any NFL game. And I mean listen to what the announcers are saying. Its filled with innuendos. Its quite hilarious. And they completely know what they are saying.
You don't really know how the real world works, do you?
Gretorp has one of the greatest positions North American eSports has to offer: casting in the first ever NASL. NASL is the first of its kind in North America; a prestigious league with the largest prize pool SC2 has been offered here. Future potential sponsors and newcomers alike have their eyes set on this event. How many sponsors have already been deterred by such erratic behavior as set forth by the presentation of the casters?
As cliche as it sounds, with power comes responsibility. Gretorp represents NASL as a caster. It's a powerful position granted towards an individual.
It's obvious Gretorp is trying really hard. And I'm not saying joking isn't allowed. But there are some obvious things you cannot and should not talk about on air. The things you do and say as a representative have rippling effects beyond your control.
How many potential sponsors have we lost? How many potential viewers turned away in disgust? How would Europe and Asia feel about such immaturity in a STAR League? If a star league carries itself out in such an inappropriate manner what example does this set for the rest?
God why do people fucking complain so much about every little thing, esports is already ridiculously huge, and its just a niche market, you people act like its a super professional nationally televised event or something when its really a bunch of us gamers just chillin and watching some good games. I agree there are some things that shouldn't be said like hardcore swearing etc, but is it really that big a deal?

Think about it. "Yeah, that product I endorese? Fuckit, use it if you have to use something like it, but I don't really care ¯\_(ツ)_/¯." That's not exactly like Michael Jordan flaunting a pair of briefs with the intent of selling them. It's sort of like ragging on your own sponsorship - that was the point of the post. Not sure how you don't see it that way

I don't know, I don't think Europe and Asia are two individuals, nor could I sum up an entire country's reaction to an event, but I'd guess they wouldn't give a merry fark.

Last time i checked both Europe and Asia were continents not countries.

Hey, looks like my opinion is interesting and useful here! I am european, and i can in fact confirm that i don't care, at all. I can also positively confirm that the image of your country has not suffered any damage. At least with me. I obviously can't speak for every other european.
But since i don't know if the official european president of europe has given an official european statement of approval or disgust, i probably should stop talking before i fall out of line in case she does so.
Edit: Actually, he talked about crabs. I didn't really listen, but i think he was talking about crustaceans, but it could be misunderstood as talking about STDs, and incontrol laughed at him a lot. No idea why people are making such a hiccup.

Nada's games where the best of the night IMO, he played really really well. His TVP is looking REALLY strong these days. He probably worked on it alot after losing to inca, although those were just a bunch of all ins and a bit of overeagerness on his part when trying to snipe that nexus he was so far ahead in that last game against inca =_=
Naniwa vs Nada games are highly recommended though he played so well, down in supply absolutely rocking the protoss deathball it was really impressive.

Nada's spread was ridiculous, he always made sure his army was in excellent position during each engagement and his units were spread out, even with forcefields that was the game breaker.
Man nada was playing well today. BTW did anyone see his stutter step in his GSTL game, that was the most crisp impressive stutter step i have ever seen, so good.

Yes, that was probably the most fluid marauder stutter I've ever seen. He can't really pull it in NASL due to lag tho.
Today, more than anything, he relied on perfect positioning, and massively efficient drops. Destroying the forges researching 2/2 twice, the last one of which with like 15 seconds to finish made his army so much stronger than naniwa's that the engagements were much more 1-sided than you'd expect.
I think there is really something to 2/2 M&M versus Protoss, of course catching both forges twice really hurt Naniwa, but otherwise just great battles by Nada.

He's got like 10+ years experience playing with arcs and microing units well it's not too surprising though

You're not really supposed to answer rhetorical questions, especially when there's no way you can know the answers to the questions. I mean, knowing the answer to the first question would have to mean you are in contact with every potential sponsor and that they assured you that you didn't lose them, which of course you aren't or couldn't possibly be. Knowing the answer to the second question would mean you have some very sophisticated method to gauge viewer reactions. I'm thinking you are looking purely at viewership and seeing it either grow or remain stable and thinking that Gretorp's comments didn't have any effect, which is flawed thinking.

Maybe you can't, but of course it's possible to aggregate a certain demographic to answer that question. Why are you acting like it's a ridiculous thing? Again, the question was rhetorical, I believe.
