Hey guys, following the success of the last tournament held in Perth and due to the high turnout and the much larger than expected SC2 scene in Perth I've decided to hold a second tournament. Yes yes, the first was hosted by the guy we all know and love, Griefer, but he has informed me he would like to compete in this one, so I've decided to take over the hosting reins.
Tournament Details
Size: *40 Players*. Due to venue restrictions, we can only have a max of 40 players coming to play, however, there is plenty of room for spectators .
Date: Sunday, 15th May. * Date finalized. 15th of May it is.
Format: 4 Groups with 10 players in each group, Round Robin. You accumulate 1 point for a win, the top 4 players in each group will then move on.
* Sanic - Winner of the last tournament, will be seeded at #1. ** Timmes - Runner up of the last tournament, will be seeded at #2.
The tournament will then move on to a round of 16, in which each match will be Bo3. The Grand Final and 3rd Place Final match will be a Bo5.
* In the event of a tie for any of the top 4 places, we will have a look at who won the direct match up between the two people tied, then that player will advance
Map Pool: The map pool will be as follows: Shakuras Plateau MLG Metalopolis (Fixed No Close Position Spawning) GSL WC Crevasse GSL Crossfire GSL Xel'Naga Fortress Shattered Temple Tal'Darim Altar (Ladder Version) Backwater Gulch Xel'Naga Caverns
* In group stages, you'll play each map in the order they are presented in above ** In Ro16, each player will veto (1) map they do not wish to play on, then the player who finished higher in their group will choose the first map, with the loser choosing the next maps there after. ** In Ro8, same concept *** In Semi-Finals (Ro4), same concept **** In Grand Final and 3rd Place Final Match, each player will veto (2) maps they do not wish to play on, etc, etc
Time: 10AM. Sign-Ups commence at 9:30AM.
* Like the last tournament, if you are travelling from out of Perth, email me or pm me some of your details and I'll reserve a spot for you, if you don't show up by 9:50AM however, I'll offer your place to someone else.
Entry Fee: $20.
* I have to stress this is a non-profit tournament, every bit of money that is left after covering venue costs will go into prize pool, it will be in excess of $300. I'll even be forking out some of my own money into the prize pool and to cover excess expenses. ** Would also like to point out that I'm accepting donations, every donation received will go straight into prize pool, do not feel obliged to donate however.
Location: Shop 2, 114-116 Murray Street, Perth. The place is called MCGaming

You know I will be playing of course
|
What's the date of the tournament?
Also, that's quite a lot of games for the group stages... will there be enough time?
|
wow this looks great, think I might come to this one : ) I definately need to finally choose a race if I'm going to play ahaha oh and date would be very nice!
very curious if it'll be before patch, does anybody know anything about the plans to release 1.3.3?
|
|
|
Date would be nice xD but pretty sure I'll be in...
|
|
Sorry guys, added date!
@Azzur
We have until 4PM to finish up. So I think we will
|
9xBo1's + 16 person single elimination will not finish in under 7 hours, I assure you that.
|
Can't make it. Damn, was really looking forward to this =\ Good luck to everyone who enters though.

Particular date?
|
The earlier you decide on a date, the more likely you are to get interstate players
|
I don't think anyone will come interstate for a $300ish prize pool. Potential, though!
As a note, I can't make any Sundays, and I'd also question whether it would not be better to hold it on a Saturday given that a lot of people might be coming in via public transport and Saturday public transport schedules are more flexible than Sundays , I think.

If its on a sunday I can possibly make it from interstate, probably not if its on a saturday.
|
The venue costs are really low, if 40 people turn up the prize will be in excess of 450. MCC gaming is a wonderful place.
|
If 40 people turn up, the way it is now, the prize pool will be $480. That's without any external input.
At this point in time it's definitely going to be on the 15th of May.
Also, the reason why it's on a Sunday is because it's just easier. The number one reason is that I'm unreliable on a Saturday, and I'm hosting the tournament. But added to that, many people have different commitments on Saturdays, and Sundays are generally people's free days.
Public transport may be an issue, but that's just something everyone has to deal with. I'm assuming a large number of people will be travelling by car, but for those who happen to only be able to travel via public transport, you guys (including myself) will just have to make other plans.

Yeah. That weekend is the weekend of my school music camp. And the weekend after is very close to my semester 1 exams...
It's pretty tense. Hahahaha.

Good to see another tournament in Perth up and running. Hope it goes well :D

While I do understand your reasoning, I think it may be a bit of a stretch to say that Sundays are 'just eaiser'. But, either way, if this is the day it is, then this is the day it is!
I'll try to be there, we'll have to see, I didn't get to join in the last one, but I am super excited that we have another, larger, one happening!
|
Can we use our own laptops?
|
Love the tourneys that are going in our little isolated place in the world. I will definitely participate if there's any more events after July (when I return).
|
On April 28 2011 22:25 CrumpetGuvnor wrote: Can we use our own laptops?
Unfortunately no. Whilst I understand you may feel uncomfortable on a desktop, and I totally understand being in a comfortable environment is key to playing well, it will just be too much of a hassle getting your internet connection sorted out.
Also, if I permit you to, a lot of people will want to bring their own, and then more complications arises.
|
this is on my birthday, i shall wish my win away!
|
Important Notice:
The time has changed. A lot of people were mentioning how it was going to be very hard for them being relatively early on a Sunday seeing as public transport comes pretty late on Sunday's.
The tournament will now start at 10AM, sign-ups will commence at 9:30AM.
Thanks!
|
|
Doh I am out of town for this
|
holy crap! I been thinking about moving to Perth from UK as my sister lives there and now I have a good reason to ah ah ah
|
Bumping, the thing had disappeared off the face of TL
|
Was just about to bump this, guys, don't forget to let everyone know, friends, clan mates, etc.
The more turnout, the higher possibility more frequent future tournaments will run.
|

Would we be allowed to use laptops then?
Also, with the time changed to 10am, do you think that you have enough time for the entire tournament (9 group games + 16-man finals)?
|
Just went and walked past the venue on my lunch break, you guys might want to put the name of the place in the OP as there aren't a lot of street numbers showing. Took me a while to find it.

Good idea. Added name plus a link to their website under location.
@ Azzur
I'm going to have to say no, regardless of which internet connection you use.
Also, guys, don't worry about the time issues, if we do happen to go over time the tournament will still run.
|
There are other people in Perth who play sc2?! I would love to play in this but my thesis proposal is the next day
|

Get it done the day before Then come play some SC2
|
Any chance that I can get seeding :D
|
why scared of playing me?
|
Important Announcement:
To avoid complications that could almost certainly arise, I have decided to change the group stage format to 8 groups of 5 players. With the top two advancing through. Check the OP.
Also, the top two players of last tournament have been seeded.
Sanic is seeded at #1 Timmes is seeded at #2
That's all.
|
|
This looks amazing What is the general skill level like though? I'm only in platinum and I don't want to pay just to get steam-rolled every game hehe.
|
im in same boat, dont worry. PLatinium power
|
Last tournament, there was an overall surprising amount of diamond/masters players that showed up.
Don't let them scare you though, I am in the process of working out some prizes for lower league players as I understand there is going to be inequality of skill level across the board.
|
Judging by the last few tourneys I'd say the 'average' skill level seems to be about platnium.
|
Hitting crunch time at uni but i might come down. Probably the earliest i wake up in the month of may
|
Yeah I'll come Sounds good
|
I'll be there
|
:D Good to hear about another tourney
|
Awesome this is at MC Gaming, It's a really good place, I go there all the time with my mates.
|
Finalized map pool. Finalized group format stage.
|
i'm totally in, where's the venue?
|
Is there gonna be another tourney after this one? I'm really quite sad that I'm going to miss it and definitely want to keep being involved in the Perth SC2 scene...
|
Will being at the venue at 9:30 pretty much guarenteed a spot? Or is it a good idea to show up a little earlier. Not looking forward to missing out
|
on the day of my gf's birthday party.... how dare u D:
|
@ Plague_R
Check OP (Original Post) for shop location.
@ GGPope
It all depends on how much of a turnout this one gets, if this one has a huge turnout, then I'll definitely be there to host the next. Just trying to grow e-sports in Perth .
@Flashback
I would be there at 9AM to secure a spot, if the last tournament is anything to go by.
|
This sounds awesome. Not sure if I can make it, but I think it's great that people are looking to expand esports in Perth. If there's another one running after this, I'll definitely be coming!
|
Just wondering if there's a parking building or sufficient parking bays near the venue? Currently deciding whether to drive or take public transport.
|
@ ace
Don't think so. You could park in one of the bigger car parking bays in the city and walk, otherwise take public transport I guess.
|
Thanks for the reply Sedz, looks to be a great tourney! :D
|
Ahh still on site working! Even if i didn't play in the tourney i'd still show up. Oh well, gg gl guys
|
gotta bump this, only two days to go till tournament, you guy excited? :D
|
I'm excited. Went down to check out the venue today, it looks awesome. Way roomier than Citypoint, with bigger screens and nicer chairs. Wish they had the same DeathAdder mice though :D.
I have a few questions:
1. Will some group matches be held simultaneously? 2. To spectate matches, will we need to buy time and join the match as an observer? Or will there be some sort of large screen for spectators? 3. Do competitors need to buy time, or is this fee covered with the $20?
|
I hope there's a screen or something, thought I might come down tomorrow morning and see how it's all going though I don't intend to compete. Fingers crossed it all goes well!
|
:D So when will you start streaming the games?
|

These answers please, me and a mate will be coming down will there be a big screen?
|
1) Yes, group matches will be held simultaneously. 2) Unfortunately, the venue doesn't have a screen there, and I looked into hiring some projectors but they were either a) too pricey or b) not for hire 3) $20 covers tournament entry and playing time
In saying that, you're welcome to join games and observe if both playing players give approval, you won't need to buy time or anything because that's already covered in venue costs.
I'm pretty sure your card will be active for 7 or so hours, so if you don't make it past group stage you're welcome to stay and continue playing on your card/observe.
Any other questions?
@ Underz
I'm going to gather as many replays as I can, and the good ones I think I'll commentate and upload to youtube.
|
Good this makes me happy, apart from you commentating <3
|
You know my voice is amazing.
|
Hows dan doing? Haven't seen him around in ages not to mention how you guys tagged up, and just to annoy me put a s in between.
|
On May 14 2011 21:56 Sedz wrote: In saying that, you're welcome to join games and observe if both playing players give approval, you won't need to buy time or anything because that's already covered in venue costs.
So what you're saying is that there will be a bunch of free computers to use for spectating (I'm confused, did you book the whole place)? Can everyone use these computers or just the players who have paid the $20? Because I was just planning on coming down and watching some games. A couple of my friends are planning on entering, but I'm not going to because I'm a total scrub. Otherwise, I will just buy time and spectate that way.
|
The venue only has 40 computers at the moment, so every single computer will be in use for group stages. After group stages, I'm not sure who will decide to go or who will decide to stay, however, if you are not competing then you'll have to buy time to use a computer. It's 3 dollars for an hour. But I'm sure I can work something out with the manager there to possibly get it cheaper.
I wanna say good luck and have fun to all those competing tomorrow. It's going to be amazing.
|
Best of luck today guys! Hope to hear more soon
|
Well I'm out. Thanks a lot for organising this Sedz.
Great venue too.
|
I had fun despite doing pretty badly Thanks heaps to the organisers. Great choice of venue!
|
Hey just wanted to say a big thankyou for putting the time into organising a tournament, I was getting nervous for you guys when people couldn't read the numbers on their hands, thought you had a long day ahead of you .
Had a great time, despite starting to feel exhausted 5 games in, guess I better work on that gamer endurance lol.
Hope you do it again!
|
This was a great tournament. Pity the only grandmasters who showed up were Protoss, stupid pvp.
Will definately show up again next time.
Anybody who was here that I had a good chat to, add me on sc2.

Yo, blonde bearded laptop guy here, was a great tournament and a really fun day. Everyone was really good about reporting matches and listening to the organiser which always makes life easier, thanks guys.
MC Gaming only started up a few weeks ago so that's why you might not have heard of them, it's a cool place and the guy who runs it is really friendly, you should definitely head down there and support them if you enjoyed today.
Anyway I've got the results here, I substituted the numbers with the names to make it easier.

THOSE CHAIRS WERE SO AMAZING
|
Agreed those chairs where godlike. Thanks guys for running this it was great fun. Please do another one soon
|
Alright guys, here's my wrap up.
First of all, huge thanks to my co-hosts Buff (Tall guy, purple sweater) and Travis (beard guy, nuff said) for helping me massively with organising matches and giving announcements, but most importantly taking care of the results and brackets and making sure each match was input correctly to ensure the tournament ran smoothly. Honestly, couldn't of done it without you guys, and it would've been dull without the MvC3 watching and random black commentators squealing when dormammu landed a special.
Also, thank you to Pete for buying me a bubble tea, even though you waited in line behind a person who ordered 6 bubble tea's and got the order wrong.
I would also like to give a huge thank you to Joe at MC Gaming. Joe was just so co-operative when I came to him asking to organise a tournament, he gave me an amazing price as well as donating some other prizes to the prize pool. He's a really friendly guy and just overall, pretty awesome. Whenever you're in the city, have an hour or two to spare, pay him a visit, spend a couple of dollars, play some games, all's well.
Now to the venue, (I'll get to the chairs soon). For those that came to the last tournament, I'm sure you'll agree this one was at least 100000000000000x better. It was spacious, the computers were amazing (apart from a few small minor graphics glitches) and everything overall ran pretty fast and smooth.
I would however like to apologize to OldWolf, he was playing on Computer 1 which I was told had been a bit iffy in the past, and got some freezes which may or may not have impacted his matches, even still, they would have been incredibly annoying and really off putting, really sorry man, hopefully your experience next time is unhindered .
Also, how fucking amazing were those chairs?
Overall, it was an incredibly successful day, I had a lot of fun and I'm pretty sure everyone else found it hugely enjoyable.
For those that didn't know, this was the prize pool:
1st Place: $200 + Logitech MX518 Gaming Mouse 2nd Place: $120 + MC Membership Credit + Mouse Pad 3rd Place: $80 + MC Membership Credit + Mouse Pad
And now the part everyone's probably been waiting for. Yes, there will be another tournament in the near future, as to when I cannot say, but expect it within the next month or two. (Probably going to aim for mid year uni break). All I can say is it will definitely be at MC.
Also, some feedback would really be appreciated..
Thoughts on tournament format? Did you guys think overall it was run well with the group stages going into Ro16, etc
Thoughts on entry fee? Was it too high?
Thoughts on location? Anything MC can improve on in time for next tournament
Anything you'd like to see? Perhaps a projector/screen where matches will be broadcast
Thoughts on hosts/co-hosts? Anything we can do to ensure your experience is more enjoyable?
Thoughts on map pool?
Also, thoughts on chairs. Amazing? I know.
That's all guys. Hope to see you guys next time.
|
Thoughts on tournament format? Group stages was definitely more enjoyable than the previous winner/loser bracket elimination thing. Probably the biggest thing was that this way people won't have to wait a long while in-case a particular round goes for an extended amount of time but it also means people get to play at least 9 games (or however many people in a group) rather than playing maybe 3 games? and then having to go home.
Thoughts on entry fee? It was fine.
Thoughts on location? It was fine.
Anything you'd like to see? Perhaps a projector/screen where matches will be broadcast - That would be nice.
Thoughts on hosts/co-hosts? Anything we can do to ensure your experience is more enjoyable? It was fun.
Thoughts on map pool? It was fine.
Also, thoughts on chairs. Amazing? I know. - Yep.
|
Did anyone get a pic of these fabled chairs?!
|
hey guys it is my pleasure to have all of you to come. BTY! my name is Joe................... maybe the mistake was come from my English accent...lol but again thanks for choose MC_Perth hopefully you guys can come around again. cheers.
|
Oh wow, haha sorry about that Joe, I thought you said Gerald when I asked your name lol. Thanks for having us, it was great.
|
Awesome awesome nice to see the replays aswell this time!
And don't forget guys can always come have a look at Ascension Gaming! Or join up and play games with your fellow Perth citizens.
|
Was a good day and pretty good hosting all round.
This was my first tournament that I have attended so I have nothing as a basis on how well it was run. But in saying that there was very few hickups during the day, only a couple of minor freezes or computer drops, but all around was a great day.
Sorry for a sub-par grand final =( wish i could up a better fight against a grand master toss =(.
Thanks Guys and look forward to the next LAN.
If anyone wants to chat or prac add me Vasso.858
|
"Dan" here. Just posting to congratulate the organisers on a great tourney, although I didn't have time to stick around for the finals it was a great experience. Hopefully me and broseph can come around next time with some actual proper practice under our belt - regardless it was still great.
This was also by far the best LAN centre I've seen in Perth (not that I go to many) ...also those chairs... holy check so good
Also, some feedback would really be appreciated..
Thoughts on tournament format? Group stages into Ro16 worked perfectly fine. Perhaps if you wanted make the tournament larger then you would have to consider a potential 2-day tournament (eg qualifying groups --> elimination tournament...but obviously that gets quite messy). Anything bigger is at risk of not finishing on time, so you guys had the size right. I also agree with Sanic, having a relatively large sized (~10) pool during the group stages allows players, even if they know they have no hope of getting through, to be able to play a sizable amount of games before getting knocked out. Paying $20 and having to go home after 1 or 2 games would potentially lose you a lot of lower skill level players and the tournament wouldn't be near as fun.
Thoughts on entry fee? It was fine, at first $20 seems potentially a lot when you know you aren't going to win, but it's still worth it/fun and its perfectly understandable as it is necessary in order to produce a decent prize pool.
Thoughts on location? Was tops - wasn't crowded. Great atmosphere. Also: chairs.
Anything you'd like to see? Perhaps a projector/screen where matches will be broadcast ^ This. I'm not sure how you would go about it. There was that big empty room to the right of the stairs as you came up, were they not - potential casting lounge?
Thoughts on hosts/co-hosts? Perhaps you could organise some booth girls like in the BW tournaments?
Thoughts on map pool? I could probably bring out some zerg QQ and complain about x map(s), but in all seriousness they were fine.
Also, thoughts on chairs. ...dude...
|
My thoughts: Everything was excellent and the only improvement would be some sort of viewing screen, as mentioned by others.
@ Joe I have to know where you got those chairs from, seriously considering getting one myself.
|
hey man Set 2 - 5 all link to the same replay. do you have the other 3 sets?
|
One of my mates asked Joe where he got the chairs from before and iirc he said they were from China unfortunately.
|
Looks like I made a copy pasta fail with the replays. I sent an email and reddit pm to the replayfu admin to see if he can find the missing replays, other than that there is nothing I can do unless someone else saved the replays.
|
lol can't believe i managed to miss this thread , i would of loved to go down and watch some games maybe next time
|
Awesome place, and the tournament was well run! Re: the map pool, probably best to exclude a few of those non ladder maps (crevasse) for the low level players in the initial group stage? Just my opinion.
Next time ill have more than one PvT strat/experience against mech so i wont go out 0-2 in the ro16 after going 9-0 in the group stage ahhhhhhhhhhh . Oh well, pretty good for my first sc tourney.
And just for a few people who were making a few snide comments about me right behind me as I was playing : Keep the idra inspired comments to yourself!
|
Some other suggestions I have: 1. A way to view results as they happens, whether it be a read access google doc or something that would be pretty cool. 2. A mailing list that people can sign-up to get e-mails about this event so we don't have to keep checking for the next thread announcement and people like iPlaY.NettleS don't miss out.
|
MLG Metalopolis is on SEA now???
|
Thoughts on tournament format? Thought overall, it was good, fast and efficient.
Thoughts on entry fee? Entry fee was definitely worth it seeing as you got to spectate/play using your computer for the rest of the day. So thats what, 10 hours for $20? AND you get entry into tournament. Great price.
Thoughts on location? Definitely MCgaming. Great place, good amount of computers, a lot of space. Did a rhyme, wasn't a crime.
Anything you'd like to see? I think a projector would be problematic. If we use that big empty room on the right, there would have to be some way to soundproof it so that players cant hear the unit sounds from that room - I think thats the only real issue with that apart from seating.
Thoughts on hosts/co-hosts? All was good!
Thoughts on map pool? Was a nice mix between ladder and non-ladder maps (: I think it allowed players who weren't as familiar with the non-ladder maps to still have a good chance of getting through the group stage.
Also, thoughts on chairs. Amazing.
In addition to this cannon rushing should be BANNED. jgfdaiojfdaiofjsiodajfioasdjfioasdjfioasdjfioasjiofaifsda

Lol I saw that game, was a brutal way to lose your last group match. I feel for you broseph. It's part of the game though.

I am so sad i missed this tournament. My mate (haruhisuki) went, and i haven't heard anything negative from him, will definitely try and make it to the next one.

haha yah, oh well - I didn't react at all so the cannons got up easy :s silly mistake. Will definitely be there next tournament, unsure if I'll be playing because I'll be out of practice as I'm in my last year of school so I am being forced to study a lot thanks to parents <3
^ changed my mind, I'll find a way to practice. Will be playing next tourney

I don't know if you're referring to me - I play toss though and was like "phoenix vs terran?" but when I realised your strategy I thought it was so smart! and you had the micro to pull off the early game harass. I was very impressed to say the least.

No I dont think it was you (you were the guy that was having the gfx problems right ?) Just some people making shitty idra stlye comments about me within earshot because they see me with colo/vrays against zerg.

Next time just look over at them and maintain eye contact for like three seconds, without saying a word. They'll feel so bad that you heard them and you'll feel amazing.
Tommy Lee Jones style.

It was extremely amusing. I'm never going to let him hear the end of it.

I was looking into getting a projector / PA system for casting, and i had Joe (The owner of MCinternet) clear the room for us, but it's just so damn expensive. I'll continue looking and at this stage my options would either be borrowing a projector from somewhere or using a large 30" monitor if i can find one. If anyone knows or has a projector and would be willing to lend it to the tournament for the day that would be amazing.
At this stage I don't think ill be entering the next tournament, but running it instead and probably casting. I'll discuss it further with Ben but It will be some time in June, I'm meant to be going to exmouth/rotto with some mates and attend a few 18ths during that month but I'm going to make it work and host one somehow ^_^ .
Hit me up with an email at kkulisatunhla@gmail.com if you want some more info on the next tournament, or if you have a beautiful projector/pa system for us to use.
EDIT: Could probably hire a projector but it would mean that $80-ish would be taken out of the prize pool.
Thoughts?

Considering that the vast majority of players that attend a tournament will not win, it's better in my opinion to enhance the entire tournament experience as opposed to the reward for one, two or three players. Of course a bigger prize pool instills bigger competition, but being up on a big screen with casters analysing every move in your play could also encourage people to 'show off' and play in a competetive manner as well
Looking forward to the next tournament! Exams will be over in June so I should be able to come :D

Dammit didn't realise this tournament was even up! You should do another facebook event like last time, because the tournament forum gets pretty active and often the page will get lost in all the threads.
Were there still too many players to enter like last time?

I agree, having a projector would greatly increase the awesomeness. This would be really cool

Agreed, especially for a small tournament in Perth. I would assume most people enter the tournament not for the money but for the fun (it's not like this tournament is someone's career).
In order to account for the cost of the projector you could also increase the amount of players in the tournament, I'm sure more people will show up than last time (case in point: people posting in the thread saying "I didn't even know it was on"). Providing a better experience (eg with projector), as well as your tournament becoming more popular in Perth (word of mouth, TL, etc), will result in a snowball effect of in the tournaments size (to some extent), in which case you can then begin to raise the prize pool as well.
Considerations for projector/casting however, include two fundamental things: - Not having horrible casters. - Making sure it is somehow soundproof.
Edit: Forgot MCG is limited to ~40 computers. This is a potential issue in raising the size of the tournament players~

That sucks bro Personally, I thought your play was great. YOUR PVT WAS SO GOOD TO WATCH :D

there is the potential to run an online qualifier...we would need the numbers to justify running one however. ultimately up to the local Perth community and how keen everyone is. if 50-60 players registered and played online for a spot in the top 32 we could include more players.
