if anybody is from Saskatoon and wants to make a trip out message me or email me at aaronbartlett3777@gmail.com. i could drive but it would be nice if there was at least a couple others willing to go and split gas and stuff
I just registered and paid. I'll try to stop by and check out the venue (never been there before) prior to the February tourney date, but I am very much looking forward to it
Whoa. Is it capped at 64? Is it first come first served? I registered, do I pay at the door? Are you set up for any commentating or anything set up for spectators?

Well, actually we are planning a casual event in January however we are focusing our advertising on the major event in Feb.
K0Re it is great to see you may be doing something in January but we'd appreciate it if you plugged your event in your thread.
My bad, people were just asking and I didn't have it out yet so I figured I might as well give some sort of response.
Back on topic though, what happens if someone who does pay doesn't show up for the tournament? Who would get to take their spot (will there be a backup lineup I guess is what I'm asking).

Once the event fills up and is 100% sold out we will be opening up a waiting list or "Standby List".
Yeah, I'm not too good at it right now so I won't sign up but I'm planning on going to watch and cheer on some friends. If I get good enough by then the waiting list will be what I'm going after

Sounds great! There will be a video team on site as well .. sure we can figure something out. Send us an email ( info (at) projectxlan.com ) and we will keep you informed in regards to commentating.
I don't want to put a damper on the thread and I don't mean to be rude but in both Edmonton and Calgary we have managed to have 500-650$ first place cash prizes (with a similar payout system) but for half the buy-in (in Edmonton). The point of me saying this is that if we are to draw people from out of province the cash prize needs to be in the 1k area for people to consider flying/coming from afar. (I am assuming that your goal is to draw some people in since your sponsorship with blackfoot inn implies it)
However, great job on getting the sponsors it might not draw in people from Ontario or NE USA but it is going to be big for the local scene in Alberta. I hope more of these come. (and in Edmonton too, although it wont stop me from driving)
I signed up, but I will pay next week when I can verify I have that saturday off. Hopefully that many people wont have paid already eliminating my spot. But as far as I can tell only about 4 of the 30ish people registered have paid.

Thanks, we have a great relationship with our local sponsors including The Blackfoot INN as we host our major BYOC LAN Parties at their venue+ Show Spoiler +
. **Our next major BYOC LAN party is: Project X: Redemption! May 13 - 15, 2011 in Calgary**
We arranged this special room rate with them to encourage people from out of town to stay for the weekend.
We are a local event group and this is our way of giving back to the LAN gaming scene in Alberta. Project X strives to promote a strong respectful e-sports community in Calgary first and foremost. It is great that we can push the envelope on cash / prize giveaways and really set the bar.
They have videos on their site which I would recommend checking out as well.
The glove is perfectly suited to playing a game like SC2 because you have all the control and features of a keyboard in the palm of your hand - it makes hot keys and shortcut keys so much simpler to use. It just takes a while to master
Look bad aas and therefore likely banned/kill your hand in SC...
+1 on the tourney And definitely having someone the community recognises for the commentary (like Chill !) would be great. Though I'm sure I'll be watching either way
On December 16 2010 07:25 whitey_ wrote: Will somebody there be actually playing with "gaming gloves"? LOL
I will come down just to see that in person!
A representative from The Peregrine may be coming down to the tournament to highlight it's features and have demos. One of our regulars was a referee @ WCG in LA and he said it was insane watching pro players use the glove. Here is a youtube video of it in action ... from talking to them people have used the glove in photoshop, remote cars, sc2, HoN and a wide variety of other devices. It is pretty sick :D
Imagine if they had a right hand glove that worked like the mouse and the left hand is for the keyboard ... so sicc ahhaha, whoever wins that glove should test SC2 out while they're there
$40 is pretty extreme for a one day tournament, and you are taking an exorbitant entry fee and only paying half of it out when you also have sponsored prizes?? major cash grab going on here

Renting something that can not only hold 64 players, but also at least that again in fans and staff for the whole day on a weekend is pretty expensive. I think you should check your facts before spouting this nonsense.
On December 16 2010 10:28 koosh wrote: $40 is pretty extreme for a one day tournament, and you are taking an exorbitant entry fee and only paying half of it out when you also have sponsored prizes?? major cash grab going on here
Cost of renting SB (on a Saturday) + Cash prizes given out > $2560
If anything SB is losing money compared to any normal Saturday. Like Darpa said, have your facts straight before you accuse.
On December 16 2010 13:07 flowandebb wrote: Can people just come to watch this tournament? And would there be any decrease in price for not playing?
I'm pretty sure if you don't use a computer there, it's free. But if you wanna play on a computer, you have to pay the venue price.
Project X will be taking over the entire venue all day just for the SC2 tournament and we encourage visitors to cheer on their friends. However we may limit the amount of visitors allowed due to space limitations. We ask that all visitors remain respectful and conscious of the tournament in play.

Project X is extremely passionate about the LAN gaming / e-sports community in Calgary. We are committed to hosting high quality events and tournaments. It costs a significant amount to take over the largest LAN center in Calgary, even for a day. Half of the ticket price is going towards the cash pot and the rest goes towards venue / marketing expenses. Anyone who has hosted large tournaments like this knows the amount of volunteered time and energy it takes to organize a successful event.
Thanks for the post and everyone else for jumping in

I stopped by Switchbox today and signed up for this tournament. I am a platinum zerg so I recognize that my chance to win is 0%, but it should definitely be a fun day. With any luck I can at least make it to diamond by feb 5th.

The strange thing is V1 of the tickets had all those instructions and a few people didn't get it. We simplified it and it appears it still needs more tweaking. It is a great system and makes it easier for those who don't have access to a credit card.

My god. I had no idea that a tournament this big would be in Calgary. I was debating to sign up but then I saw the likes of Firezerg and Stalife who scared me away D;.
I do have a question though, when is your next tournament for SC2? As a high school student the entry fee of 40$ scared me off a little bit but I heard you guys had "Casual" tournaments how big is the prize pool in those tournaments?

Generally for the casual cash tournaments it is $25 a ticket ($15 house, $10 prize pool - 60,30,10 split) however at the moment our main focus is for this upcoming StarCraft II tournament that has enough prizes that even the casual player can walk away with something. If you live in the calgary area I suggest signing up to our facebook, twitter & website to stay informed on future events.
Although we haven't officially announced this yet but one of our global sponsors is coming on board and will be providing enough swag that everyone will be walking away with roughly $20-$30 just from them in addition to $1,100 in major hardware pieces. Raising the prize pool an additional $2,000 - $3,500ish. We are just waiting on official specs on the hardware and swag to announce it to the community.
Tetris Effect will be coming down to cover the tournament for another episode of their podcast. If you're a fan of Street Fighter you've most likely heard of Tetris Effect from the infamous "Canada Cup" SF4 event here in Calgary some months back. Tetris Effect is a Canadian gaming centric podcast and we are looking forward to having them at the event.
Project X is pleased to announce that Sapphire Tech is now sponsoring this upcoming tournament. Sapphire Tech has been a long time supporter of Project X and is now providing an additional $3,500+ worth of prizes & swag! Raising the total prize pool to $7500+ in cash & prize giveaways.
We have stated from the very beginning "Cash & Prizes" and that is why we have a break down of the cash element and the prize element. The total amount of prizes being given away (including the cash) is over $7k. Thank you for your input. We thought it was pretty clear.
On January 29 2011 09:00 stalife wrote: How are the hardware prizes distributed?
We will be releasing that information early this coming week in a document however it will be a pretty balanced tournament for the prizes. Was there a particular item you had your eye on?
Not sure what everyone in Calgary is doing tonight however at SwitchBox(380 9737 Macleod Trail SW) is showcasing the GSL / OSL finals on their projector screen. SwitchBox has a special rate in place that is $5.00 for entry into the venue and $3.50 (which is a members rate) for computer use per hour. The earliest you can arrive to get these rates is 10:00 PM local time.
There will be a large number of people watching the finals including members from the UofC-SC2 club. Bring some extra cash as it looks like the group will be ordering some pizza for the event!
There is certainly alot of well named players attending however that is the great thing about tournaments as it only takes one little mistake to get that edge in a game to win it all. I know a few people are attending to gauge where they stand as a player and if you are clocking in all those hours into the game competing is a nice way to find out how you rank. That and prizes are always nice

Second this. To be honest, having $1,200 in cash and like $6,000 in random hardware is nowhere near as good. Its not something that will draw lots of top players, most good players in legit teams have the hardware already, so playing for more hardware is not really worth it. And its also incredibly time consuming /annoying to sell that stuff, I've won some hardware at LANs and it took forever to sell :p ..
You should sell the hardware, then make the cash pot $7500 :p Then you'd get a lot of top players going ~~

Hey Cynical,
Unlimited amount of people can register however we are only accepting the first 64 paid users to participate in the tournament. Tickets are available for purchase at SwitchBox and you can also purchase tickets from our website. Be sure to register in advance as you will be asked to do so at the door.
also, how is switchbox going to handle that many people? If I recall its could seet 20-30 comfortably, but this is 64 gamers plus i would expext at least that many again in friends.

Brackets will be announced day of the event as people are still registering for the event. Unless we get 64 paid participants before the event.
Might be thinking of the other LAN center in Calgary. SwitchBox is the largest LAN center in Calgary and we will have 64 computers running for the tournament.
Getting super pumped for this tournament. Really excited to cast some intense games with prodiG :D I hope to see some awesome people out there and see some awesome games.
Calgary people are awesome. I can't wait to go to Calgary! Will be checking in at Black Foot Inn on Friday! Can't wait to try Peter's Drive-in and Calgary tower haha

Calgary Tower sucks! It's also a few blocks from my apartment, let me know when you're here.
I'll drop by the event as soon as the TLOpen is done.
unfortunately not much stalife. Basically the same things you would do in other cities =(
And I'm thinking I may participate in this as well. So just to clarify, if we buy the ticket in advance at switchbox then we are guaranteed a spot, correct? Do you happen to know how many more spots are still available?
Calgary is boring, especially when the weather is THIS god damn cold ... I'm guessing it's at least -35 degrees Celsius with the wind. I guess you could visit the zoo ... I wonder if they open during the winter?
On February 01 2011 09:14 stalife wrote: What are some cool things to do in Calgary? :D I have the Sunday off to tour around Calgary with my gf.
I can recommend some restaurants, but with Zoo Lights over and the city in a deep freeze, there isn't too much really special to do. You could go skating at the Olympic Oval. Other than that it's malls, swimming, bars, lazer tag, etc. Stuff you can do in any other city.

if you go to the site, Projectxlan.com click the SC2 tourny banner, and hit participants, green checks are people who have paid, and x's not. Right now about 32 people have pre-paid, out of 64. So i think if you pre-paid now you would still be guaranteed. I pre-paid months ago. LOL.
Also I have room for 1 in my car, coming in from Cochrane, (west side of the city) PM if necessary.
Edit. To be clear, I can pick up anyone in the SW or NW.

To clarify, yes, you MUST prepay in order to guarantee yourself a seat at the event.
With 90+ people registered, we obviously cannot guarantee everyone a seat and there are those who will unfortunately miss out.
We obviously expect to sell out and your best bet is to prepay now to save a seat, as any available seats the day of the event will be filled on a first come, first served basis (with users registered for the event on our site taking priority).
Prepay will be available online right until 8:30am Saturday morning, so you still have lots of time. Tickets will be available at SwitchBox until friday night when they close @ 4am or until we sell out.

I checked the forecast for the day of the tourney and it should be pretty nice. High 5c low -7c.

At the moment there is 32 people prepaid and yes, if you purchase your ticket at SwitchBox you are guaranteed your seat for the tournament.

What do you like doing together? There is some options around town but just depends what you are into. The Calgary Zoo is nice, Chinook Mall is 5mins away from the Hotel and has some nice restaurants, theater, bowling etc.. The Blackfoot INN has a nice list of the area and attractions.

Road trip to banff national park Calgary Tower Rent some gear and Ski/Snowboard at olympic park Telus science centre Glenbow museum or just go shopping/bowling/imax/resteraunts in chinook centre which is pretty close to switchbox
On February 02 2011 09:04 iSeeNubs wrote: I was wondering can spectators watch for free?
Due to limited space spectators may be required to purchase a visitor pass that allows them entrance into the venue. All visitors will abide by certain rules to prevent any disturbance from those competing. The visitor pass will include a complimentary beverage & snack item (chips, candybar) and be entered into select house prize draws. Cost is $10 per person or two for $15.
This event is also being streamed on iccup.tv and Project X will have a camera feed of the event as well.

Not sure if you enjoy LAN Parties however the next big event we are hosting is "Project X: Redemption!" taking place May 13-15, 2011 @ The Blackfoot Inn. It is a three day PC LAN party that features StarCraft II as an official tournament as tons of other stuff. Watch this HD video to get an idea of what took place last year.
I will be heading in from Wentworth area, if anyone needs a ride and you're semi-along-the-way then I'd be happy to pick you up. Planning to arrive around 9:00 a.m. PM me.
I'm picking up 3 people at the moment. Room for 1 more. Coming from NW (Royal Oak) so anyone that is near Crowfoot/Dalhousie I can pick up. Just send me a PM as soon as possible.
On February 05 2011 06:07 Starp wrote: Is this tournament going to be streamed live? (was a long post so I apologize if this was already answered?)
Yes, the event will be streamed over iccup.tv and we will be updating the thread throughout the event. Providing all the links to stay in tune with what is going on. We invite the world to check out the stream and following the event.

Also when does it open? Could we show up even earlier than 9 am?
The doors will be opening at 09:00 for bracket registration and practice. You are more then welcome to show up earlier then 09:00 however the doors will be locked unless you are a volunteer or staff member.

Highway 1 at Revelstoke was closed due to an avalanche warning (or an actual avalanche) but they just opened it 30 minutes ago. My dad got stuck there and is on his way to Calgary now

Wow, I just came back from the tournament and I had a blast... haha it was an amazing experience. First time flying out to Calgary and people were just so nice to everyone. I forget his name, but the guy offered to take me out to tour around Calgary and everything too. Thanks to Project X and everyone at the lan, my stay in Calgary has been AMAZING. I really look forward to coming back!!
I think the staff at the lan really paid attention to little details which were very very impressive. My gf was so impressed by the way you guys ran the tournament! Also, I love the fact that everyone stayed til the very end of the series! It was awesome
Wow, Stalife was just untouchable today. Congrats on the win, you deserved it. ^_^
Big thanks to the organizers. Despite not liking the venue (I can't really play on my laptop at Switchbox), this might have been the best tourney I've been to. Great organization, great format, great prizes.
