Alright all this gold bashing has to stop... You guys realize how rarely promotions happen, right? I'm 1200 gold and regularly beat plat and diamond players. LEAGUE IS MEANINGLESS!

Seems that ladder promotion happens after your 40th game, and then possibly never (maybe until end of "ladder season," maybe a completely arbitrary and high number of games played). So if your skill changes dramatically after your 40th ladder game, your league is literally meaningless. Check sc2ranks.com. Diamond league is full of <600 point noobs and gold plat has it's share of >1200 point players, because league promotions appear to not really happen at all. I'm matched regularly with players from silver to diamond, and their league has no bearing on their skill. I'm as likely to beat a diamond I'm matched with as a silver.

Points are only really valid once you are at Diamond as they are reset when you change leagues. I think that your two points here are contrary to most of the existing assumptions about the ranking system. Drawing primarily from Excalibur's threads (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=150367, http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=118212, and http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=142211). 1) "Well to be promoted you need to do well in your games." This could mean two things: could mean that your performance in game matters to your ranking (E.g., economy, margin of victory, etc). This is pretty much accepted to be false - only thank that matters is Ws and Ls. "A: Both factors are irrelevant because they can be gamed. The only contributing factor to promotion is the end outcome (win or loss) and the skill level of your opponent (his MMR). This is confirmed by Blizzard's Leagues and Ladders FAQ, found in a sticky at the top of the Multiplayer and eSports forum." Could also mean that you'll be promoted after getting good results, e.g., winning enough games. Clearly that's true, but what is unclear is how often it's even possible to be promoted regardless of your your success, "The system periodically re-evaluates your placement every X games. X varies and nobody knows because Blizzard is explicitly not telling us, however according to a recent interview with Dustin Browder, your initial promotion or demotion will be evaluated after about 30 games." So the initial evaluation is after 40 total ladder games (5 placement, 5 more for 1st review, and then 30 more for last scheduled review). After that, it's totally unclear when you'll be reviewed for promotion again. 2) "Points are only really valid once you are at Diamond as they are reset when you change leagues." I believe this goes against the current prevailing wisdom. Points are comparable across league because you can be matched against anyone in any league based on your (and their) MMR. If I'm playing diamond and plat as much as gold (which I am), then clearly my rating should not be inflated by the fact that I'm in gold. Could be some mechanic here I'm not understanding, but I don't see why it would matter.

I was wrong in trying to blame it on the system. I personally believe is the league placements are fairly accurate in terms of skill, and x2 gold =/= 1 diamond.
