BACKGROUND I made a blog on TL about how these 2 guys in my class are assholes and think they are gods at starcraft 2. Because of Chill, they found out and challenged me to a 2v1. The blog can be found here
On September 29 2010 03:04 CheAse wrote: So there are these 2 guys in my class who are pretty much duchebags and think they are "the shit".
They are the kinda guys who only talk to girls and try to impress everyone by making bad dirty jokes(not many ppl like them).
They were talking about sc2 team games so I tried to join in, asked them how good they are, races, ect. After I got shunted, they go on about how hard 2v2 3v3 and 4v4 is. I tell them that 1v1 is where most of the competitive gaming is, and they respond by telling me that I will never get better if I only play 1v1.
I didn't want to sound like an elitist so I didn't tell them off.
Now the question is should I tell them they are noobies and put them in their place.
by the way, they are like gold in all of their leagues.

We'll take you on anytime 2v1 Mr.Manilow for $1000.
Love, TEAM BAWD
PLAYERS Team vVv.CheAse - I'm a decent diamond level player on the new team vVv gaming. I used to be pretty active playing in random TL tourneys, but for the last 2 weeks I have had no video card and too much school to play.
Team BAWD(duchebags) - Both gold level players who claim that playing team games is how to really get better at SC2
WHEN Today 9 pm PST (04:00 GMT (+00:00))
FORMAT 2v1 Best of 5, loser picks. Any blizzard maps or iccup are usable.
So what are you going to do against 2 6 pools, or 2 4 gates...Or just mass marine/marauder push after stim -_- I mean they could just cheese you and you would not have really anyway to stop it. I don't think you thought this one through bro.

i fully expect chease to win, as terran he can hold off any early pushes with a wall/bunkers/repair, gold level players usually just commit suicide with their units when faced with a strong defense. he can probably put a planetary fortress at his natural or something, or take a hidden expansion somewhere and they wouldn't scout it for the entire game. basically, once chease gets 2 bases up and running he's gonna win, since gold level players stay on 18 workers for the entire game.
Meh... it's a lose, lose for you (irl). The only possible thing you can gain (other than the cash) is e-respect on these boards.
No matter the outcome everyone in your class/school will still take the "popular" kid's side. So.. if throwing away your RL reputation is worth "TLRespect".. ouch.
Or this could be one big troll for name recognition. Either way.. gl!

If you lose a 1vs.2 it really proves nothing for them just they are that bad they need 2 players to beat you which is silly. They are bad and they should just realize it.
is this high school you're talking about or what? It just seems a little strange for anything higher than gradeschool (no offense I'd do the same thing if I were you)

and how the hell did you manage to convince them for all this to be streamed and shit, lol

BCIT, and it took me a while to convince them . They didn't want people messaging them after so they are going to use different/guest accounts. Plus they said something about it being better beating me with people watching.

lol at people who take "seriousness" a little to serious.
chease i am sorry to inform you that the correct spelling for "duchebags" is "douchebags", from the root french word "doucher", which means "to shower"
he can probably seriously cripple one guy with 8 rax reaper+wall in, and then play it safe and stay on one base and harass the other with hellion drops and safely macroing up. i doubt either of team bawd will expand or have more than 100 supply
I support the douchebag joint alliance. Just to make of this world a bit more ridiculous place. But i'm pretty sure CheAse is winning. Someone who accepts to go 2v1 (i'm talking about TEAM BAWD) is imo somewhat lacking in intelligence. When an individual accepts to go 1v2 you know he's so prepared for it that you have no option, otherwise he would not risk it. Specially with women prize involved.
I hope you win, but i highly doubt it. I lost a 1v2 against my two younger brothers back when they were silver league and i was diamond. (now theyre diamond, too but they also dont practice with teamgames...)
On big maps its pretty hard (6player etc.), because its harder to get mapcontrol. You need total mapcontrol to prevent them from getting their forces together. Terran is the best race in earlygame if they play very agressive... But in the later stages of the game Zerg is better because you may harras them with mass mutas constantly... Terran has only Banshees and drops...
Awesome. I hope they dont watch the stream though.
As someone who's played a lot of 2v1's against bronze-platinum level friends, ive found success in rushing one of them with early cheese and hoping I can take advantage of their inexperience and survive to a late game 1v1.
This will be interesting. grudge match of international proportions. From what you said in the previous thread, i doubt the girls really matter. its for the money and fame
I really dont want you to loose only because what you gonna feel, if this will happen;p
And please do not underestimate Gold's.I have 2v2 in Most of the time matchmaking system give us platinium and even diamond players. We still menage to win some of these matches. Maybe we just dont play enough to get higher. Anyway my point is that player from Gold league doesnt have to be bad. You better find some higher mid Gold level players and play some 1v2 training matches to check how it feels.
2v1 is just too hard to come back from, they can do anything and win.

Yes maybe you right, but just like you said its 2v1 they can probe rush and win ;p
stream should be announced after the match starts, that way they don't know what the stream URL is until after the match starts, at least maybe that will deter them from cheating.

that means you must be D- warturtle
D = 700-1000 diamond D+ = 1000-1400 C- = 1400-16600
imho The higher ranks are closer to B/A- depending on player.
Why would you ever agree to play a 2v1 if your the team of two? If you win, it doesn't matter it was 2v1, if you lose lol your a scrub. Theres no victory condition
too many people overestimating gold players and 2v1s. should be easy for chease unless they have some really sneaky builds, but i doubt it if they're truly gold.
Chease FIGHTING. Just don't lose to cheese. Be sure to do a lot of scouting, and play super safe and you should be fine. Aim for timing pushes that are hard to stop, and nothing too gimmicky or risky.
oh, so you don't know? I would've thought double Zerg would be pretty easy. Rax first, bunker in mineral line when it finishes to fend off any 6 pool nonsense, then wall-in and go reaper. I doubt gold Z players could keep up with proper reaper micro.

if they go double Z chease, just get rax on like 9 supply and wall off making sure you have enough room for at least x3 repair scvs on a single part of the wall, and you should be fine.
Otherwise, defend and get it into a macro game and I don't think you can lose.

Yeah I was thinking this too, not sure how cheesy these guys are going to be. It will be helpful to pick big ass maps 2.

Yep. These maps are also bigger (larger rush distances), and have more starting locations, which means longer scouting times, which slows down rushes.
lol @ the people who ACTUALLY thought they were going to play for 1,000.
But like gatz said... I'm totally expecting both parties to be looking at the stream, or assuming they're lacking a second monitor/PC... have it running in the background. :s
I dont know SC2 but i'm intrigued. Someone enlighten me, is 2 vs. 1 plausible? What if they rush?
I used to and still continue to play broodwar 1 vs. 2 (D and D-) friends. Only with a NR rule. Even then its become increasingly hard for me to win, and i seldom do so on few MUs where they both are the same race. (i'm c-)
guys, if they were good enough to do strong strategies and be unstoppable 2v1...then they wouldn't be in gold to begin with
as someone with experience in 1vmultiple people, they generally dont cheese/double 6 pool/worker rush/etc because they're always cocky..and then they usually lose.
Honestly, i don't think they (BAWD) could stream peek to much use, other then figure out the starting positions and unit compositions. Chease more or less knows what is coming: either cheese, or a double strength push.

There's a big difference between gold players who have some grasp of what strategies are viable and players like those two. You could probably come up with a reasonable, simple rushing strategy that's hard to hold off 1v2. I doubt either of them know enough about SC2 to come up with a strategy that makes sense. Maybe I'm wrong though, it'll be interesting to see, I'm actually staying up for this despite how pathetic the whole showmatch really is.

Maybe take a page out of idra's book and check their match history and see what builds they tend to go for xP

just don't underestimate them. and don't do anything too crazy. You should win.
team BAWD is here, they both just messaged me on bnet so they wont be dodging.
on a side note, my vid card exploded a few days ago and I couldn't boot up. So I really hope that doesn't happen during this thing or i'm gonna get flamed.
If you win using the Terran teleporter of death!, then you get +20 cool points.
10 minutes left omgomgomGOMOGMOGMG.
EDIT: Adding to what the dude below me said: I'd like to point out that you CAN close explorer.exe and still play SC2. My brother does it on his shitty PC to play LoL more smoothly. In case you're really worried. ;P
eh from the 1v2 experiences i've had so far (3 matches against 2 bronze players) it gets seriously annoying and frustrating especially if they decide to be dicks
It just started. Watching it on goatrope's stream now. Can't believe the hype around this. [Words of Support for you CheAse!] I hate people who are cocky like that.

Man, you are living in a fantasy land. These are regular bros in a college class, they don't give a shit about whether or not you're amazing at an online video game. They'll certainly talk shit back when a nerd starts fronting for literally no reason, but why in the world should they actually care?
You don't "take a seat" to someone with a skill you don't care about who tries to shove it in your face.
He didn't shove anything in their face if you actually read his post. Furthermore, you referring to CheAse as a nerd but not the other two is hilarious since all three of them are in the same class.
Lol you guys are insane. Let me give you two analogies which you are trying to defend:
1. Two people talking about the golf round they just had. They "torn it up." You, a good amateur golfer, overhear the conversation. After discovering they were playing on the local course (EGADS) and using improper out-of-the-rough technique, you quickly explain who you are and how they are playing wrong. Shockingly, rather than accepting your advice, they are rude and wonder why you are talking to them.
2. Two people are carrying a basketball, about to play 21. After seeing that they aren't that good, you randomly show up to challenge them to a 2v1. Shockingly, rather than accepting your bold challenge, they don't give a fuck and tell you to fuck off.
This isn't how the real world goes. You don't bust into games of 21 and challenge kids for their honour; You ask if you can play too and then show them you're good. Why am I even explaining this it's fucking common sense.
I can see how you could assume that by what you read. It can be hard to understand what the situation is if you weren't here, and more so because I explained it poorly.
Let me make this clear, I didn't come out of the blue and randomly challenge them to something just because i'm better. You may not believe me, but i'm not socially retarded. These guys are classmates and I simply tried to give some helpful input, then they arrogantly assumed i was terrible.

Extremely entertaining set. I thought after game 1 they had hustled you, but you managed to put that thought to rest with game 2, 3, and 4. Racks depot gas engineering bay PF is definitely my favorite part of the series. Definitely a gosu b.o.
i think that these games were casted well enough by goat and company. having hd or day9 recasting from replays would only make it less epic and less funny.

I actually stayed up for this and it was worth it... It reminded me of SC1 2v1s and 3v1s I've played against friends back in high school, although the wager & trash talking made this one a lot more comical.

You sure about that? Seems that ladder promotion happens after your 40th game, and then possibly never (maybe until end of "ladder season," maybe a completely arbitrary and high number of games played). So if your skill changes dramatically after your 40th ladder game, your league is literally meaningless. Check sc2ranks.com. Diamond league is full of <600 point noobs and gold plat has it's share of >1200 point players, because league promotions appear to not really happen at all.
I'm matched regularly with players from silver to diamond, and their league has no bearing on their skill. I'm as likely to beat a diamond I'm matched with as a silver.
Well to be promoted you need to do well in your games. The system is actually very good at measuring skill. Points are only really valid once you are at Diamond as they are reset when you change leagues.
Edit: Or maybe I'm just rationalizing the fact that I'm still in gold

1) "Well to be promoted you need to do well in your games." This could mean two things: could mean that your performance in game matters to your ranking (E.g., economy, margin of victory, etc). This is pretty much accepted to be false - only thank that matters is Ws and Ls. "A: Both factors are irrelevant because they can be gamed. The only contributing factor to promotion is the end outcome (win or loss) and the skill level of your opponent (his MMR). This is confirmed by Blizzard's Leagues and Ladders FAQ, found in a sticky at the top of the Multiplayer and eSports forum."
Could also mean that you'll be promoted after getting good results, e.g., winning enough games. Clearly that's true, but what is unclear is how often it's even possible to be promoted regardless of your your success, "The system periodically re-evaluates your placement every X games. X varies and nobody knows because Blizzard is explicitly not telling us, however according to a recent interview with Dustin Browder, your initial promotion or demotion will be evaluated after about 30 games." So the initial evaluation is after 40 total ladder games (5 placement, 5 more for 1st review, and then 30 more for last scheduled review). After that, it's totally unclear when you'll be reviewed for promotion again.
2) "Points are only really valid once you are at Diamond as they are reset when you change leagues." I believe this goes against the current prevailing wisdom. Points are comparable across league because you can be matched against anyone in any league based on your (and their) MMR. If I'm playing diamond and plat as much as gold (which I am), then clearly my rating should not be inflated by the fact that I'm in gold. Could be some mechanic here I'm not understanding, but I don't see why it would matter.
There is a lot more to the system then what we know about and what we 'think' we know.
I was wrong in trying to blame it on the system. I personally believe is the league placements are fairly accurate in terms of skill, and x2 gold =/= 1 diamond.
I'm in gold and regularly beat platinum/diamond players but have lost to a few silvers even recently. If you're just a low or mid-level diamond you should try challenging the next high score gold/silver player you find to really test the waters. The silver/gold/plat/diamond part is really only a rough outline for about 50% of the player base but the rest have extraneous circumstances like playing intoxicated sometimes or letting other people ladder on their account.
A lot of pepole see this as a 'nerd vs jocks' type of game, Team BAWD being the jocks. But they're all in the same computer science class.
and CheAse mentioned that they're nerdy, scronny guys. Look at CheAse's profile - he's not all that scronny looking.
From the descriptions I've read/heard, not only is CheAse cooler IRL, but he's better at SC2. and he won 100$. It's like tirple win. Serves the douchebages right, I guess ^__^
Can't wait for an update!

the whole situation reminds me of the movie "A Christmas Story" where the main character beats the shit out of the bully, and the other kid runs around like a chicken with its head cut off, so to speak.

Alright all this gold bashing has to stop... You guys realize how rarely promotions happen, right? I'm 1200 gold and regularly beat plat and diamond players. LEAGUE IS MEANINGLESS!
Please read the posts on how the leagues actually work, promotions happen pretty quickly if you deserve it.
go chease lol you'll own em i owned 3 of my buddies 3v1 one time and one of em 6 pooled lol just watch for cheese kuz thats really the only way these losers will win... imo lift off to island maybe and just outmacro these scrubs lol

Yeah, I can see how people would get this impression. In that case, the way CheSase handled it might not have been great.
But seriously, if any of you have been to a non Ivy league college CS class. Oh my fucking god. Bragging about being cool in those classes and being a douche about it is like when the kids in special ed brag about how smart they are.

I love how when sore loses are losing, their only claim is that "you suck so much". Happens all the time :S Last night my friend got 2gated, saw it, fended it off, then the other guy was like "you know the build you didn't only works against what I just did right?"
Errr... wut? Of course it does, it was a counter.
But anyway - nice job Chease, some good fun - also thanks to goatrope, I was listening to your cast while I was at work, and whilst I couldn't see what was happening, you and the guys were hilarious.

nah it couldn't have been an act. I mean, what would you gain from making this shit up? The way neewo played was as real as it gets. I know ppl who play like that; they don't use hotkeys, they use arrow keys to scroll the map, build unnecessary buildings etc.
Anywho, the cast was great, funny as hell. Love the sorcery bit and amazing insta-memes. The best being "How's your eco bro" in caps no less. That shit killed me cuz you can't make that up, you just can't.

I guess teamliquid doesn't want to become an imageboard-like-site, they want to be something thats accessible to more people than just the hardcore dedicated nerds. So for that reason they only allow image-only posts, meme posts and stuff like that in certain threads like the youtube thread, high thread, image thread, and whatever image macros thread. (and barely allow porn or pirate content at all).
Don't feel bad about it, if you are good mannered at all, which you are if you are asking about forum policy like that, then TL loves you

Cool, thanks man That does make sense. The board is kind of at risk of being spammed with dozens of stupid pics if they don't have some kind of rule in place. Guess they want to keep things professional and I'm all for that.
Am I bad for wishing there was more BM in the game? I just think of the game with Chill that Day9 casted and all the bitch/faggot/girlfriend this and that and hoped for more.
Check out the 3rd replay, and watch where Neewo pings without sight. He was either hacking, or watching the stream, and they still lost.
Watching the stream would make sense, with as little as he really did to add to the game. I almost thought he was just collecting resources for FourPool.
Pretty amusing though, hour well spent! :D Congrats for the win!

Well 'Bro', if you've followed this whole thing it isn't exactly Cheese beating up on newbs because they "talk to girls" but because they were totally arrogant and rude to him when he tried to talk to them about SC2 - completely disregarding the fact that this guy might actually be better than them at the game, and maybe they should listen to him.
They then found out about his TL post and shit rolled from there. They got humilated on several streams, and are now are $100 short hopefully.
It's not pathetic, it's fucking awesome when assholes pay for being arrogant.

I giggled hard after i read about the whole situation. I have no such problems at university, because i am already acknowledged as the StarCraft guru (or maybe just like the only guy who is interested in the game). :>
It makes you wonder though how these kinds of shmucks are bred. I mean FourPool is the obvious sweet talker, big in words small in deeds, not having bad intent, but the other guy Neweo (or w/e was his nickname) had that genuine douchebag attitude.

<_< Read the thread?
Using "talking to girls" to measure someone's success, personality, "amount they win" etc. is probably the most childish and immature thing I have ever heard.
"Talking to girls" is not in any way shape or form a big deal unless you're an immature loser. It's like eating a burger, taking a shit, or talking to a guy. It's not something that should have value attached to it.
Ironically, you using it as a measure of value just shows that you clearly don't do it often, since this is somehow a "big deal" to you.

Decent attempt lol
Too bad that professors in college/university don't have the authority or even the care of contacting the parents of a student unless it is a serious emergency such as fear of self harm or danger of others.
I could've sworn that Chease's name was Barrie, and not Adam, Josh, or Bruce. Hence Manilow.
I also could've sworn that college professors didn't give half a sh*t whether or not you showed up for their classes, especially not enough to have to drudge up relevant phone numbers for the students whose names they didn't know.
Anyway. Chease, -great- series, the BM and the stakes made the whole event really gripping -- $100 is a lot to put on not getting double-cheesed 3 games in a row (no pun intended).
Since they actually paid you, that's cool. Even if you really, really hate these dudes as much as you say, though, you could've -- seems safe to assume you didn't -- offered to take them out to eat after they paid you, or something classy like that.
Ignoring all the stupid ("hur hur they could introduce you to sum girlz"), it'd turn out to be a better story for everybody involved -- "lol, remember that angry dude we lost that 2v1 to?" vs "lol, remember back before we started playin for real, when you beat us 1v2?" Nobody's going to put a gun to your head and force you to be tight with them, but it never hurts to be -friendly- with anybody -- if nothing else, remember how the original bet was for 10x what you actually came away with, and remember how that suggests they've got an extra $900 entertainment budget between them.
I mean, I assume it's Canadian dollars, but I mean, that's gotta at least be enough to get HotS when it comes out.

Profs definitely don't call parents...let along care if you miss an exam unless your class size is < 30 ppl or you're a grad student/research assistant. haha...nice try though.
I don't think it was a set up, but if it was all I would say is well done, because it was hilarious and I have a giant banana grin right now. =D
I think Chill misunderstood CheAse's original post. He was thinking that these guys were pretty cool jock types who CheAse was just jealous of because they talked to girls. Chease was trying to say they were douchebags who act like talking to girls makes them so fucking cool, when it's really not a big deal. They remind me of Randy and Andy from the movie Sex Drive:
Pretty sure the school he is talking about is BCIT.. I go there too.
Here in BC computer games aren't very popular so I doubt any of these guys are getting many women. Except me, but that's because women really respect a high apm 1700 terran.

ya but you're talking about players who also claimed to have employed sc2 strats in wcg 2005, built a pf in their main, and thinks python and lt are the same map
This was the show of a lifetime. Quality entertainment right there.
It also goes to show that you really shouldn't act like you know everything, because there is always someone out there who knows more and is far better at whatever it is you are bragging about. :p
Oh and I think you realized that in game 1 you would have won fine if you researched infernal preigniter faster and stuck with mass hellion thor tank (perfectly achievable off two base. That rapes mutaling bling so hard its not even funny.)
You should turn this into a musical montage and get a thousand likes for it

Imagine if day[9] had co-casted with nony on "alcohol."

If the link is broken then this is a sad day for TL.net, those games were more epic then most of the GSL season two. Such tension, such passion, such stakes. Not just $80,000, no, instead our hero fought for Justice, he fought for Pride, He fought for Women. He never retreated, Never surrendered, he taught that an honourable 1v2 was a pleasing offering to the SC2 Gods and in their benevolence they blessed him with eternal glory and riches beyond measure.

I remember reading this when it happened. It seems like a lifetime ago when SC2 was released already! I almost forgot about this but it was a truly epic set of games!
