Because it's a well known, established fact and clearly testable that stalkers shit on roaches? Seriously, why are you debating this? He won, by doing this strategy because he outplayed his P opponent and got away with having great macro. Every engagement between arms except for 1 or 2 went completely against him because of it.

Hydras are the superior ground army. There isn't a debate. Hydras > Stalkers > Roach. That isn't actually debatable. Roaches can make a fine front line. Hydras are your actual dps. With corruptors, maybe, but he threw away all the corruptors he had, several times. He had 0 corrupors more often than not. I've seen plenty of zergs with without hydras (including that last game, incidently!)

Starcraft is not about having the perfect unit combination. The speed of the hydras is so stupidly slow that roaches are better for counter attacks and general flanking. Hydras just get wrecked by colo so bad its not even funny. The zerg abused the extra mobility of the roach and thats why it was the correct unit composition. You are correct that it is the correct composition for fighting Ps army in a straight up battle though.

Hydras beat Stalkers. Stalkers beat Roaches. And let's not forget the Immortals. It was a mistake not to get Hydras. That's it. Did you see the very last fight? He had like 3 times the army with his roaches, and still lost.

You are correct that it is the correct composition for fighting Ps army in a straight up battle though. The protoss seldom had his army in a good position and never really built up static D at it. A decent size control group of lings accomplish the same thing, and I'm not saying "lol go pure hydra". But to simply not put hydras into your unit composition is a mistake. I've talked about this enough already though; everybody knows what's up and the horse is dead.

Maybe his plan was to not seek any direct encounters? Hydras are much better than Roaches vs Gateways in straight up fights, nobody will deny that. But when you go that counterattack-style Roaches fit much better than slow Hydras.
