Is it so hard to believe that GOM is deep in debt because of investments and they need paid viewership to pay some of it off? I'm not saying that GOM's mistake should be our burden, but some of you make it sound like they're trying to squeeze extra dollars out of an already profitable business.
And also, I think a lot of you have been spoiled by free streams. I bet that an equal amount of criticism would have been levied if the cost was less, say $10 per season.
Yeah, because $5k they are going to generate with this (at best) are really going to help cover the debt of a multi-billion dollar company.

especially considering sc2 isnt NEARLY as close to the perfection that bw had achieved over the last decade.
fuck you Blizzard. fuck you GOM. fuck you Gretech.
just leave bw alone and release these vods for free!
Posting on Team Liquid, you are doing it way wrong. First, they haven't "killed" any of the BW leagues (yet, I would be furious too if they did), BW wasn't perfect when it started as an ESPORT, so that point is invalid. And throwing a bunch of "F U's" around does nothing. [/backseat mod]
I understand they want us to pay for watching this, and I'm pretty sure alot of people are willing to pay, if it wasn't so damn expensive.

I don't get how people can be so dumb and side with this shit. OGN and MBC did it for free. You got quality stream every single time. We have 3 major leagues and 12 exciting and good teams.
GOM/Actiblizz has way lower budget, way higher "hype-factor" and way lower quality on players and streaming abilities. Now give me one reason why I would want to pay for this shit?
|
If GOM made bad business decisions and/or created a piss-poor business plan for sc2, then we shouldn't be the ones paying for it. They should have thought about what customers (we) were willing to pay (close to nothing) to watch these tournaments BEFORE they announced ridiculously high prize pools and decided to pay X dollars for licensing fees, even if it would attract the best sc2 players. The market will teach these corporations one way or another.

I will not be paying to watch this event, but I'm not sure why everyone is being so dramatic about it.
The price is definitely ridiculous, but I think this is a little bit of an overreaction.

awful. awful. can't even state how awful this is.
guess i'll go bitch on the gom forums haha

It's ok. Really, who cares? People with money that have a boner for Blizzard will pay up and watch it. The rest of us will torrent/pirate stream like we always do. Hell, even MBC/OGN charge for VODs but we get them for free from youtube (thanks nevake <3). If they're gonna make any profit online, they HAVE to charge from the start. Otherwise they'll create a fanbase (LARGE fanbase) that will curse them out once they start thinking about charging.

The prices are too high and the quality is too low; however, the concept of paying for (e)sports should not offend anyone. I have been a long time lurker on TL and love this site for its amazing information and community but come on people, some of the comments in this thread are extremely immature.
That said, I really hope they reduce the price or work something else out in the future. I want to see esports grow and at some point in the future i could see more regular sport pricing take off but this is not the best way to build a user base for a new game and a (mostly) unknown service in the US.

crazy idea .. there are tons of free hi level starcraft 2 vods out there, so why pay ? Additionally this way too expensive .. i'd pay 20$ a year eventually :-)
|
I think season 1 contains the 3 first tournaments, and if the quality is 720p+ w/ no buffer issues I'm going for it.

So I'm guessing GOM doesn't care about non-Korean viewership which makes sense. Additionally they don't want to risk the server becoming unstable because of high viewer traffic, or the Korean audience might begin to criticize. I suppose then that the GSL is really a stunt to promote SC2 to Korean viewers, because Gretech and Blizzard aren't too worried about SC2 developing as an eSport so much as they are invested in it succeeding in Korea.

Not sure if this link has already been posted but here are the sample videos for both low quality and high quality streams. These videos are actually of a sc2 game not a commercial so you can get a better idea.
GOMtv.net sample videos
I also noticed this: "VOD ticket will be valid even the season over (Once you buy it, you can watch VODs whenever you want.)" on this page here

but vod ticket would only let you view the seasons you purchased for right? not sure if anyone watches the same game over and over again.

Z mistake costs the game. T mistake just puts you slightly back.

doesn't lag at all for me but the stream HQ is bad. Only interested in VODs anyway so will have to check how 'HQ' is there be4 deciding.

It's already clear to me that GOM is doomed to fail, and I can see exactly why they didn't want the information in that email to become public. There is no hope for a company when it's owners cannot make the most basic business decisions correctly.
GOM was able to obtain huge sponsors for this tournament, as well as broadcast to Koreans and receive ad revenue. In addition to creating a market for SC2 in Korea, they have decided to try and expand internationally. Even with the sponsorship and ad revenue, it seems like the costs for this entire operation will be very high.
It's clear now that GOM has not done the necessary market research and grossly underestimated the costs of expansion. This is already an incredibly huge and dumb mistake, especially when this sort of cost analysis is so freaking basic and relatively uncomplicated. Seriously if as a business you can't even do this then just give up.
Then, having made the mistake, they decide to quickly fix things by grossly overcharging for the product in the market in which they are trying to expand. This is hilarious to me. Usually a company would either cut its losses, or take on debt to invest in their expansion. GOM, however, decides it's better to extract as much capital as possible from foreigners now, essentially dooming their expansion plans in order to defray the costs of their expansion.
Now, GOM supporters are in the position of having to beg their potential customers for money (for the good of esports). Sorry, but we are the market that you are trying to court. If I take a lady out on a first date, I don't make her pay for dinner and sleep with me by telling her that it's for the sake of our future relationship. If you can't deliver a quality service to us now at a reasonable price, then just give up before you damage your reputation in this market even further. Thanks.
