You probably don’t know me, but you will. My name is Michal Blicharz (a.k.a. Carmac) and I run the Intel Extreme Masters league for the ESL.
In a mere couple of days we will be opening the first chapter in the history of StarCraft II as an esport with the IEM Cologne Global Challenge tournament. Sixteen of arguably the best non-Korean StarCraft II players will compete at the Gamescom trade show for $15,000 in what will be the first major live event for our new favourite game.
It is a debut for SC II in a live event but also a debut for our live events in front of a StarCraft community. You probably don’t know that much about the Intel Extreme Masters and what to expect from us. I am here to change that.
![[image loading]](http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs279.snc4/40288_139079636129598_104932659544296_162906_622019_n.jpg) A rendering of the Cologne Global Challenge stage
What is the Cologne Global Challenge? The Cologne Global Challenge is a prelude to the 5th season of the IEM. It takes place at Gamescom, the world’s most important video games trade show (next to the Tokyo Game Show). One of our goals is to keep broadening the IEM audience by creating a fantastic spectacle for the trade show visitors and by delivering the games to SC II fans at home via the ESL TV stream.
For this occasion we have built a great stage where the gamers will be competing, with three big screens to follow the action on and we’ve and put up hundreds of seats. We have invited Sean “day[9]” Plott to and Dignitas Apollo commentate as many of the matches as possible and we will receive the gracious help of the guys from GLHF.tv (with Justin "TheGunrun" Ignacio and others) to cover the matches Sean and Apollo won’t be able to.
For five days you will gorge on a daily dose of several hours packed with high class StarCraft II.
Our event is for you We’re a bit different from your regular non-Korean event. We operate to achieve a very simple goal: to show *all* matches and to allow the spectator to see every single match in the playoffs. We don’t run tournaments for the sake of completing an X number of matches in two days (this has been an unfortunate standard in esports). We run them for the sake of delivering great matches and allowing you to not miss anything.
![[image loading]](http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs490.snc3/26772_104944116209817_104932659544296_50275_4674616_n.jpg) The Intel Extreme Masters IV World Championship
YOU are very important to us. We don’t want you to choose between two or four great matches that are going on at the same time. But we don’t want you to have to spend 10 hours out of your day (or night) consuming our product. We want you to get just the right amount of daily coverage and we want the press to have the time to interview the players and write analyses between different stages of the event, while you have the time to discuss the coverage and get excited for what’s to come.
Those are very simple principles, but very often overlooked in Western esports.
A packed schedule We aim for 100%, but we can’t always hit it – we’ll be off the mark in Cologne. We operate under the constraints of a trade show with its opening and closing hours and with certain commercial activities that make our business model sustainable. We’re running a Quake Live competition pretty much identical to the StarCraft II one as well.
You will miss some of the matches live (a chunk of group play and two quarterfinals) but we will have two streams from the event just to make sure that the overlapping content is covered. On the upside: you’ll choose which games you won’t miss.
If you’re going to be among the lucky ones that will watch the tournament live on stage, then you should know that every single match will be played on stage. The “main event” will always be casted by Day[9] and d.Apollo and featured on the big screen, but you will be able to follow every single player’s progress on a plasma hooked up directly to his PC.
We will have live matches, live interviews and lots of YouTube stuff.
The bigger picture The winner of this event will get the money and the title “first SC II champion”, but will also qualify directly to the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship – ESL’s most important event of the year. That ticket is very valuable, as the road to the World Championship is a very long and difficult one otherwise.
Normally you need to go through an arduous IEM Continental Championship. Those are held in Europe, America and Asia (you can participate based on your residence) and consist of a regular season played over a few months online and a live final for the best players of the continent. The first of those will be the Intel Extreme Masters American Championship in New York City in early October this year.
![[image loading]](http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs490.ash1/26772_104944129543149_104932659544296_50279_1487082_n.jpg) The trophy
Depending on the continent’s strength, between 2 and 5 of the top finishers in a Continental Championship will qualify for the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship – 12 of the world’s best will play for the biggest money of the season and a cup on which the names of past winners are engraved.
Do follow!!! Do follow us on www.esl.tv – both the SC II and the Quake Live action (which is extremely entertaining, by the way).
I will not promise you that the Cologne Global Challenge will be the most epic thing you’ll ever see. Running an esports event is not as easy as opening the gates of a stadium and flipping a switch to turn on the floodlights. So many things can go wrong… But our crew is extremely experienced and will truly do the very best, and more, to make sure that your experience with ESL and StarCraft II will have been amazing.
If you like us or want to leave us feedback, it is always very welcome. Our website is www.intelextrememasters.com with all the coverage, galleries and replays. Our Facebok page is www.Facebook.com/IEMtv, our Twitter is at www.Twitter.com/IEMtv – those two will prompt you to watch our live streams and remind you that we exist. Our YouTube channel is www.YouTube.com/IntelExtremeMasters and we have lots to find there.
We will give away a TON of goodies from our sponsors throughout the season on the above links, so visit us for that if not in order to give us feedback. As a freshly addicted Bronze player (#4 in my league) I will be reading TeamLiquid anyway – your feedback and criticism will be very appreciated.
So, TeamLiquid, this is me and my league. I hope this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

One of the first people i ever heard of when i got into esports, and certainly one of the most credible people in the industry! Really looking forward to this event!

I love your work for Quake 3/Quake Live Carmac, always been great events that ran very smooth(unlike 2 failed Quakecons in a row). Hope the same for SC2!
How will this be streamed btw? I know you have a payment model for ESLTV but the sc2 community is used to free HD(ish) live streams.
|
Love the work you guys are doing and love the extended communication towards TL. This is going to be a great event, and everyone who's going don't forget to show up Friday at the TL meet!
|
Nice to see you here Carmac.I'll for sure follow sc2 and especially ql :D rapha fighting~

Free LQ, pay for HQ probably, that's what they've had for Quake. MLG is using the same model and nobody is crying. I think ESL is actually better value because you pay for several months coverage for similar prices as MLGs weekend if I remember correctly.

We will have an ok free stream quality and a much better Premium quality (go to www.facebook.com/IEMtv to get a free ESL TV Premium key this week, btw!).

I'm waiting for this soo badly. This event is going to be awesome

Awesome! I can't wait for this to begin.
|
You want Esports? You have to pay! And I am more than willing to contribute to the launch of SC2's history.
|
Hands up if you read the entire post in Carmac's voice.
|
heh carmac ! make some more interviews with sc2 players!
|
I <3 Carmac.
Here are my complaints about IEM:
- Streams are terribad quality, not up par the current internet streaming websites - Premium stream doesn't have a, "event fee", you have to subscribe X months and it costs around 29$ afaik.I don't want to subscribe, I want a 3-day pass and that's it, I won't use it again in the next 3 months.
You should have a premium stream with good quality for 5~10$ top for the tournament only. That's what I would do and I bet it would bring cash to you. Yep.

Yes, 'Premium' Quality isn't impressive, but it aint terrible.
29€ is for a whole year! You get 30 days for 3,49€ and you can just cancel the subscription + there are one time fees, but they start at 90 days which costs 10€ or something...

Epic post.. definantly deserves the spotlight imo <3
I WILL NOT MISS THIS!
Hoping for alot of video interviews aswell

Honestly, until ESL pays Idra, I think people shout boycott ESL tournaments. If theres 1 thing I cannot stand its the fact that organizations don't pay out the prize money to the players. You might not personally have anything to do with this but ESL should not have any tournaments if they are having financial issues and cannot pay out prize money to the players.
These players live on this money, if you cheat them they have nowhere to go and I think ESL knows that best.
|
This is gonna be sweet!
The “main event” will always be casted by Day[9] and d.Apollo
Such a beastly duo.
|
This sounds awesome :D
I just have one question, im not too sure how these things work but will the event in NYC be open to spectators? I live literally 30-45 minutes outside nyc and would love to get the chance to see this.

You'll be able to spectate without a problem! We also reward people who travel the longest distance in order to spectate our events - show up, show us your ticket proving the distance traveled and if you're in the top 3, you get a prize. You're not that far off, but who knows...? ;-)

According to IdrA, he has not been paid for past ESL victories.
Carmac, as representative of the IEM and ESL, should probably look into this in order to maintain the reputation of the establishment he represents.
Whether to ban IdrA or not is another topic altogether. Tournament organizers obviously have the right to exclude anyone they please.

and you base your assumption on the statement of ONE player? Wouldn't it be kinda illogical by Idra to participate in the Event in Cologne if the ESL never paid his prize money? It may take some time for the ESL to pay (up to one year afaik) but they do at least pay, otherwise no one would participate in their tournaments, especially not on such a global scale with all the traveling expenses involved.

I said that it's an issue Carmac should look into, which does not imply that they are in the wrong. I say this because it is an accusation IdrA has made against the ESL establishment and has already gathered strong "crowd momentum" within the TL community as a strike against ESL's reputation. Consequently, it needs to be addressed if the ESL is to preserve its credibility with many people here, which I'm sure they desire since TL is, after all, the biggest community for professional SC/SC 2.
Also, it's not like unpaid winnings are that rare in eSports. Last I checked, the ESWC has still yet to pay Ted for performances over a year ago.

Only ESL's people in charge can clear this up, but you can't make these random accusations.
Are you guys IdrA's attorneys? Great job filling this thread with nonsense.

I do not know of any outstanding prize money for IdrA, but I am not in the posision to know those details either (he has not won any money in the Intel Extreme Masters so far).
Having said that, if he comes over to me in Cologne and mentions any outstanding prize money with the ESL, then I will gladly help him out to the best of my ability.

I LOVE YOU CARMAC, on a side note is the SC tourney going to be overlapping with the QL tourney? because if so that sucks but I guess cannot be avoided. However if the semis/finals for each tourney overlap I for one will be severely dissapointed.

No, of course not. The two tournaments do not overlap at all. The Quake Live competition has an almost identical day schedule to the SC II one, except it runs in the first half of the day and SC II runs in the second half of the day.
We always run our tournaments in "game blocks" so you don't feel tortured with a CS game in between two SC II matches.

all cool - I will actually be in Cologne for that.

Great job and good luck!

Gonna be sweet. I hope I can make the stint from Berlin, but if not, I'll be all over those streams. This has some serious hype/excitement going for it.

This is 100% sprayworthy!

WHAAT?! He's the best there is by far.

WOW this would be so awesome to see live in person!!!
Anybody know anything more about the briefly mentioned Intel Extreme Masters American Championship in New York City in early October this year??
I would really love to be able to attend, I work for the Delta Airlines and get free flights so I just need to know when and where as early as possible so I can get work off.
I'll be checkin back often for more info!!

sad about brat_ok i think tournament organizers should send some kind of invitation so that players could have a proof to get a visa..

Huge fan of Carmac and nice to see he's running this. Loved his interview with Draco a few years ago. :D

Big fan of ESL and IEM series stuff, absolutely huge. And I'd say theres 15 of the arguably best non-koreans in the gamescon tourny. One person stands out.

Just out of curiosity, with no LAN in SC2 and many of the players coming from the US/Canada/Korea, will ESL be providing EU SC2 accounts for them to play on? How is that going to work?

Someone seriously needs to revise the German visa issuing policies, what's up with not allowing a European/Russian, when you've flooded your country with Turks and I don't know what other walks of earth.

Hmm, I'm not sure how things work exactly, but since we're in the Schengen Area, couldn't he theoretically get a visa to Poland and then travel to Germany as there are no borders? Or would he immediately get his ID/visa checked at the event/elsewhere in Germany?

Keep your racist thoughts for yourself next time, it doesn't belong in this thread, or in TL in general

they will most likely have a dedicated server from blizzard there, like they had in the past for WoW.

Wouldn't he get border checked between Poland/Germany, I know the last time I travelled between the two I had to show my passport etc. Though whether that was before Poland was in the EU I'm not sure.

I believe Brat_OK's team actually considered that idea, maybenexttime. But even that wouldn't work out because there is still a quite high chance that his papers would get checked on the way appearently.

Here you can see the whole schedule. I just updated it so it might take some time to show correctly. TheGunrun from GLHF.tv will cover matches that are not shown on ESL TV by Day[9] & d.Apollo. The replays of the other groupstage matches that are not streamed will be uploaded instantly after each map.

Can't stress how much I'm looking forward to this tournament! Awesome job setting this up Carmac (and all your ESL buddies)!

So i take it that Germany's border security is far superior to what the US has?
With Brat out of the tournament I think Idra has really great chances of taking it all the way.

As a Schengen country your passport (or identity card) is only systematically checked when entering via air or sea, you are not systematically checked when crossing borders between Schengen countries by land/rail
So a visa for e.g. Poland + a Schengen visa I think would have worked, and it's possible/likely that it was tried (I don't know since I wasn't involved), but I guess time was against him, as has been against many other players before

OMG IM SPRAYING CUM EVERYWHERE!!!

Hi Carmac!
This tournament sounds awesome and I'd love to follow it. But... well.
Your post doesn't mention the dates or times the matches are happening. It mentions that they're streaming, and gives a link to the stream, but there's just some guys playing CS there without any kind of narration. There's a link to a schedule buried in the twitter feed on the right, but what I'm trying to see here is what matches have already been played and when I can see them...
Honestly, if all you do is stream these matches when they're going on during the day, I'm at work then. Are you guys putting up VODs? Are you streaming the games again in the evening, or anything?
I tried to get to your website, put "IEM5 Starcraft 2" into Google, but I don't get anything useful. In fact, the top result is this thread on TL. IEM doesn't give any helpful results either. Maybe you guys should get some basic SEO done?
...wait - I found the intelextrememasters.com link deep in your post. I've dug around on there, but there's nothing on the front page about this tournament that's happening now. The menu bar doesn't work in Google Chrome, either. I loaded up Internet Explorer and... it doesn't work there! So it's not a browser issue. I'm guessing this stuff should be under "Europe -> Starcraft 2"? But that link doesn't work.
I'm really interested in this tournament and I'd love to see what's happening. But I can't find details about the matches in this tournament in your post. I can't find anything about this tournament on your main site. Even if I could, I suspect I couldn't watch the live stream if you only stream the games during the day - I can't find any kind of broadcast schedule, though. Are you going to put VODs out? I admit, I kind of assumed you would; had a look this evening hoping to catch up on the past two days of games in place of my usual day[9] fix.
I imagine I'm a typical potential viewer for your stuff. I'd really like to see these games and presumably make your sponsors happier. Please tell me how the heck I'm supposed to, as right now I'm just a bit confused and frustrated.

No matches happened so far, randomnine. The tournament will start in about 16 hours. ESL TV usually provides VODs at the end of the day, on the next day the latest. We will also upload all replays immediately after the matches.
I understand that reading the OP and expecting to get all the necessary information from that is what most people will do but by just skimming through the past five pages I can find the answers to all your questions, I believe. The feature on the Teamliquid's start page is also a great place to find all the necessary information.
Other than that: Wolf gave you all the necessary links.
|
OK, thanks everyone, that's a lot clearer :D
The reference to 'five days' in the OP meant I assumed it was Monday to Friday - the dates weren't mentioned so I figured it'd started already! I'm glad to hear that there'll be VODs put up once the games begin.
I also hope that all this critical information will be put around in the OP and on the website. I know I was whinging a bit, but it really isn't easy to find this stuff at the moment
Here's hoping for a great tournament and many more like it in future.
|
I think most of the info can be found on the first post already if you read carefully.
You will miss some of the matches live (a chunk of group play and two quarterfinals) but we will have two streams from the event just to make sure that the overlapping content is covered. On the upside: you’ll choose which games you won’t miss.
[...]
We will have live matches, live interviews and lots of YouTube stuff.
The name of the tournament is Intel Extreme Masters, and it's pretty easy to Google. This is not an SEO problem, you're just googling the wrong keyword.

I see no booths. Where are the booths? Without, it will be a total failure.
GL with the tournament!
|
cant bloody wait, should be a terrific event!!

Can't wait for the start!!!

when's it start and where can i find the stream ??

Didn't think about this but I seem to remember IEM using helicopter headsets last year for noise cancellation in QL, maybe I'm making this up. Still I'll miss booths .
|
ESL uses helicopter headsets at every live event for stage matches.
|
Feedback:
How do we find where to watch this from and when?
Not having this information available to the viewer is kind of stupid. And telling the viewer to check in each day, at an unspecified time is also just as dumb.

Any post ending with a reference to Casablanca has my vote.
Def gonna be tuning in.

So the site is down for maintenance. I just want to verify that my math is correct.
The first match starts at 14:45 cest. This should be like 7:45 pst right? And that is also when it will be streamed?
|
Seing as the site are down, what clock will the first match be today ?
|
i think 14.45 Sqq.
Shit,i m @ work... WTF.
I'll try to watch this on the phone in the toilet!! :S
|
Lets hope your prizepayouts are quicker than the EPS seasons so people dont get angry ;] Other than that, looking forward to seeing a great event with some great matches;]!
|
Hope the site is up again before the first match :D
|
Does anyone know if the starcraft streams are going? The only thing I'm seeing on either stream is Quake
|
I have tons of respect for Carmac and the ESL. Kudos for being the first to crack into the SC2 scene. Good luck and god speed.
|
Tarson vs marrow is on now
|
Anyone know where the vods can be found? I have to work durring the games... but I'd like to see the games casted by day9 spoiler free if at all possible.
Edit: Also the organizers of this should take a look at GOMTV, the way the present their info is quite clear, with easy to find spoiler free vods from games you miss due to work etc, would be a good idea to take a page from them.
|
|
Warning though, the official VODs are riddled with spoilers.
|
|
Thanks, looked all over and all I could find were replays. Wish they didn't spoil the matches in the vods though
|
This is so far a really awsome event, thanks alot for this ESL!
|
This guy is the worst interviewer ever.
|
They can stop speaking german imo
|
Is it possible to watch the high quality stream without knowing german? I'd like to pay for it, but i cant. I just get an errormessage in german

i am a complete idiot and can't find the location for this damn tournament. i want it watch it live, like, in person.
i can't find the location on their website or on here. asdf i need some coffee. i must go to work. gah
edit - well, i found it! still a retard though. lol

Mad probs for inviting Day 9 to do the commentary! Me and my friends we're in Cologne yesterday and he killed, he was awesome! Considering he got more cheers than the players, I think a lot of people came specifically for him, me included, and you should totally invite him to future events!
|
Carmac do something with this german guy on stage. I know, this is german event, but on stream most people who are watching don't know this order sound language (i don't even know english good :D) and we don't know what he talking about.
