Short History:
The Macro/Micro Tournament originated as an event consisting of players from the practice partner thread located on www.teamliquid.net. Every US player with a post that played SC2 at a platinum or lower level could enter. Our First two events were very impromptu; set up and run over the course of a single night. Both events though had a great show of support, attendance retention, and participation. You can find the brackets and results from our First two tournaments, here and here.
Due to these two successes and lots of support from participants for Future tournaments, I've decided to go the next step and make this an "official" as well as larger tournament rather than the "out-of-thin-air" 16 man 1v1 tournaments I have organized before.
The Tournament Name:
The name “Macro/Micro Tournament” was used as the event title in consideration of learning these basic principles of the Game, while also giving a feel of what it is like to play under pressure in a tournament setting. Which overall, is what the practice thread and the event(s) were/are all about.
Round of 32: Group A - Friday, June 4th, 5:00pm PST. Group B - Friday, June 4th, 6:45pm PST Group C - Friday, June 4th, 8:30pm PST Group D - Friday, June 4th, 10:15pm PST
Round of 16: Group A - Saturday, June 5th, 3:00pm PST Group B - Saturday, June 5th, 5:00pm PST
-Players must be no higher than platinum in league. Exceptions MaY be given, on a case by case basis.
-All participants are required to have access to the North American server of Bnet2.0.
-All games must be played on the North American Bnet2.0 server.
- Cannot play the same map more than once in a best of 3 or best of 5.
- A tournament administrator must be present for your match as a referee.
-Check-in times are no later than the times described above in the "When" section of this post.
-Check-in is made via messaging myself or another tournament administrator (TBA) on Battle Net at the appointed time, and receiving a response in the affirmative.
-There is no guarantee that upon checking in that you will immediately be playing your match(s). Due to scheduling restraints and the "nature-of-the-beast" this is unavoidable. You MaY receive a revised check-in time upon checking in at the original time.
-Disconnecting during a Game results in a loss. Bnet2.0 has issues, everyone knows this, unfortunately though there is very little way to distinguise, legitimately, between a intentional disconnect and one due to a Game bug.
-Being more than 15 minutes late results in a forfeit of your match/series.
-Match observers/casters are allowed, at the player(s) discretion. If a player has issues with observers, observers will be removed. With the exception of the tourney referee.
-Chat is allowed in-game between players. But if someone asks you to be quiet, you shut the hell up. No BM allowed.
-All referee decisions and/or judgement calls are final. Referee decisions are not limited by this ruleset.
StewTV High video quality provided by Stewker. Great commentary provided by BSOS, Butterfly, and crew. Hard to get any better than that.

Name: Storm Daley Email: Storm327@gmail.com Bnet ID: Storm League/Rank/Rating: Diamond(just moved up, losing all my diamond games)/can't check rank or rating now, Bnet is being lame.
Name: Kyle Email: Will PM it to you along with the rest of this information. Just making the post here so i'm sure you see it Bnet ID: Kyle Previously went by the name Pyramid.Pyramid League/Rank/Rating: Platinum, 50ish something, barely any rating. Have been playing mostly custom, but I will bring the pain.
Excuse me but what's the point of restricting this to Plat and below? It's not like diamond league has some sort of huge skill gap that you cross when you get into it, the majority of players there are just as bad as in any other league.
With this restrictions it seems you're making this into a D- only tournament. It's not like you can even enforce the rule, since people will just lose placement matches on purpose and then smurf and smash the wow players.
Basically any D+ player from iccup could get into diamond and by implementing this restriction, all you're doing is ensuring that the majority of TL will not be able to participate and will not care about this.
Everyone that has posted so far and followed the format, has been added! Welcome aboard. Remember if you have any questions, please, do not hesitate to contact me.
There are only 13 slots remaining! Make sure to sign-up fast, as these slots are not going to last long. Once we reach 32 players we will continue to take sign-ups but only on a stand-by basis. Sign-ups close Thursday night.

Thanks for the feedback.
The first rule states that diamond players may be allowed on a case by case basis but its just not encouraged. The Macro/Micro is a tournament where people who may of not ever been in a tournament will be able to. Most tournaments are restricted to high level gamers, this one is purposely not. Perhaps their experience in this tournament will lead them to try getting better in order to join more tournaments. More tournaments = bigger projection of e-sports = good thing.
There IS a big difference between a 200 rating Diamond player and a 1000 rating Diamond Player. Especially when you take out the people that constantly cheese.
The comment with smurfing. It's called honesty and integrity, some people still have it. I hope they show it by not signing up if all they plan to do is smurf. There is no money prize pool in this tournament and unless you consider smurfing to be fun (I consider it mean and dishonest in this case) you are just wasting your time.
As for your comment about the majority of TL. That is flat out wrong, the majority of SC2 TL, especially these days, are not Diamond Players. Especially not high rated Diamond.
I could give a shit if someone doesn't care about this tournament, all I care about is that it's fun for the participants (of which we will have plenty) and any viewers that will want to watch the stream(s). If it's fun for the participants, then it's a job well done in my book.

-People that have yet to put down their information and would still like a chance to play, you may add your information to this thread and you will be added to the list of alternates.
-New Map has been added to the pool. Fighting Spirit. It is the new series opener for the final and is available in the map pool starting with the round of 8. Thank you to prodiG, the creator, for bringing the map to my attention. It's a great conversion of the SC1 favorite.
-Update: Everyone that has a spot in the brackets located within the OP, should of had a friend request sent to them through Bnet. If you have NOT received a friend request from Stewker (Jake Stewart), please send me a PM via team liquid.
Did everybody post their email addresses associated with their B.Net accounts? If not, there's no way to friend them with the weird non-unique naming system.
I don't get why wasn't I added to the 32 player start list when I signed up before the dudes like Rastaban, WTF. I had a feeling I'd get skipped since my luck's always shit and this is too good to happen to me, anyways gl and hf.
Very sorry you did not get in XothermeK. You are on the alternate list though, and as these things go, people will likely cancel or not show up, especially for the initial round of 32. Do no give up hope yet! I would suggest making sure to be online on Friday, in case there are no-shows. Of which there likely will be.

Tonight I'll be hosting a map preview session. We'll be playing some practice/showmatch games on Destination, Chupung Ryeong and Fighting Spirit.
If you are on the tourney roster and have yet to check out the new maps (Destination, Chupung Ryeong, and Fighting Spirit), be online tonight at 8pm PST. It'll be a good way to familiarize yourself with the maps before this weekend. Also, hope to have the creator of Fighting Spirit (SC2 Version) in the lobby with us, to give any insight into his map that he wishes.

I'll show up to this if I can get all of my homework done in time T_T
The second OP, the post below the first one of this thread, has been updated with some clarifications concerning how to know what group you are in and the map preview session.
Update (06/03/10):
- To know what group you are in, for Round 1 and Round 2, look at the brackets located in the OP.
Round 1: Players 1-8 : Group A Players 9-16 : Group B Players 17-24 : Group C Players 25-32 : Group D
Round 2: Players 1-8 : Group A Players 9-16: Group B
- Map Preview Session. Online tonight (Thursday) @ 8pm PST. We'll be going over the new maps that are in the tournament's map pool. Destination, Chupung Ryeong, and Fighting Spirit.
-Since we have a wipe incoming apparently, and friends list is included in that, going to post up my email so that tourney players can add me to their friend's list, in case of that happening. My bnet email is jbsbz12@aol.com.

Change of plans, looks like I'll be able to make it after all
[B]On June 04 2010 10:13 prodiG wrote: Change of plans, looks like I'll be able to make it after all
Will the showmatches be casted or streamed?
Probably neither, unless one of our casters decides to do so on his own. It's not planned for tonight.
EDIT: Bnet2.0 server(s) are currently down. Map preview session is postponed until servers come back up.
EDIT2: Clarification. Like I said, the session is postponed until the servers come back up. Once they come back up, we'll be organizing a session asap thereafter, be it in 30 minutes or 4 hours. If the server(s) are down for more than 4 hours, from the time of this post, and/or the custom maps are wiped, we'll be calling it and the session will be canceled.
We will not be doing any sort of map preview session during anytime mid-day tomorrow, before the start of the round of 32.
In the case of the sc1->sc2 conversion maps not being available after the reset in time for the round of 8, 4, 3rd place, and final, we'll simply revert back to sc2 1v1 ladder maps.
What if the server goes down? 'Cause, you know... It's down...
EDIT: Alright then, later tonight or for tomorrow most likely? I can't play any later tonight, but if we do it tomorrow then I'd love to, truly love to.

Better today than tomorrow when we have to do the actual matches
Fair enough. I was hoping to play my first victim today in a few practices matches, but I guess I'll just have to play it cold. Still looking forward to tomorrow.
If it comes back online sometime soon, I'm sure we can organize something.
I'm wondering if this reset will reset the uploaded maps as well, as it's going to delete all characters, aka map creator accounts. If so, I'll upload Fighting Spirit ASAP, but I don't know about Destination or Chupung Ryeong as they aren't mine.
Tonight's session has been canceled. The recent patch and wipe appears to have wiped the custom map database which includes the maps of Destination, Chupung Ryeong, and Fighting Spirit. It is doubtful all the maps will be uploaded in the next couple of hours in time to do any sort of meaningful preview showmatches.
But, we will continue on the assumption that these maps will be uploaded before the start of the tournament tomorrow.
Also, friends lists have been wiped so I will be re-adding everyone. Remember if you are on the roster and do not receive a friend invite from Stewker (Jake Stewart), please, both send me a PM on TL with your bnet email address and try sending a friend request to jbsbz12@aol.com, my email on bnet.
EDIT: Roger, X. Made the name change to DuPA. EDIT2: Thanks prodiG. Fighting Spirit has been uploaded to Bnet and is confirmed for tomorrow's pool.

Uploading Fighting Spirit as soon as the patch finishes downloading. I'll go ahead and PM nomsayin (destination creator) and see if he can get it up for the tournament tomorrow. I don't know off the top of my head who created Chupung Ryeong (blinn i think it was? idk)
EDIT: it's up, new name is "Fighting Spirit" , no longer fighting spirit bw
Round of 32 is complete! Some great games so far and I'm really excited to see where we go from here, especially with some conversion maps coming up in the Round of 8 tomorrow.
Brackets have been updated and can be found in the OP. To distinguish what group you are in, look at the bracket image. Going from the top, down, the first four matches are group A, and the last four are group B.
Would like to thank some people that really helped out with the first round of the tournament. ReVival for accepting the offer to help host and referee games, while also giving up his tournament slot for someone else, so he could concentrate more on the business end of the tournament. Also would like to thank BSOS and Centerplay for their streams, they were a great addition to StewTV especially since we had multiple matches going at a single time. I look forward to some excellent/fun casting all around as the tournament progresses.
Finally would like to thank everyone that came out tonight. Both the victors and the losers. Out of 32 people we only had the need to replace two, that were no shows. For such an event, that is great! Look forward to seeing the 16 of you that advanced, tomorrow!
Hellsangel vs Lucretain (Postponed. Check-in tomorrow, 11:00am PST) Storm vs Centerplay (Postponed. Check-in tomorrow, 12:00pm PST) BSOS vs Kyle (Postponed. Check-in tomorrow, 1:00pm PST)
Finished Matches:
Rai vs Warriormad, 2-1
Ro16 Comments:
Ro16 is finished and we had some great games! Lots of epic moves and battles all around. Blistering Sands with it's back door and unique layout made for some good matchups, The action is definitely intensifying as we move up the rounds and players continue to get eliminated and we are eagerly awaiting the rest of the Ro8 tomorrow followed by the Ro4 and the finals!
Also, we had some great casting during this round. So want to give a shout out and thank you to those casters and streamers. Guys did a great job I thought and I'm sure those that watched on Ustream and Livestream are looking ahead to tomorrow as well.
Same to you man, I feel kinda bad for the VR's I was aggravated from the first game so I wanted to be a little cheesy. But good game thought you were ahead for a little bit and we both made our mistakes, I think I accidently cancled my CC like twice by accident >_>
Maps: Sin Chupung Ryeong, Loser's choice, Loser's choice
The final Ro8 matches were some of the better SC2 matches I have seen to date, especially from "non-pros". If you are interested in watching the stream for the Ro4, please check out www.ustream.tv/channel/stew-tv. We have some great commentators doing the matches and the stream is doing great. Great quality and consistency. Come spend a lazy Sunday afternoon watching Starcraft 2 players duke it out that some day you may find playing on the pro circuit. You can then say, hey I watched that guy when he was just getting started!
Finals begin in 2 hours! Best of 5 between Kyle and Rai! Starting map is on Fighting Spirit, a classic favorite from Brood War that has been converted for Starcraft 2!
On June 07 2010 06:59 Euphoric wrote: Will Vods be available?
VODS and replays will both be available. Replays will be linked here and VODS will be found on Ustream, after the finals. Should see all that organized and posted in the next day or two.
On June 07 2010 10:52 Wonderballs wrote: Great tourny, will be checking out the finals. Too bad Kyle took me out in Ro32 else it could have been (unlikely) me!
Nice to lose to someone who made it far.
Agreed! it's been great fun thus far.
Hopefully i dont brain fart in the finals. Should be a good time.
I want to apologize to everyone playing and watching the finals. To explain what happend, over the weekend, I was playing with terran wall-ins in the editor to make sure the ramps worked properly, and fighting spirit's lobby was a little bugged. When I went to fix the lobby, i deleted the terran wall-ins and hit publish without saving. The terran wall-ins stayed, and I looked really stupid. I apologize for the confusion and wasted time.
Takes the crown in a epic Zerg vs Zerg final series that went a full 5 games!
Game 1: Fighting Spirit - Kyle wins Game 2: Steppes of War - Kyle wins Game 3: Blistering Sands - Rai wins Game 4: Incineration Zone - Rai wins Game 5: Scrap Station - Kyle wins
Replays should be posted within the next day or two! Along with the post-game interview that Kyle gave! Great set of games fellas and an excellent tournament. Would like to thank the Cybernetic Punk crew for their always "lively" commentary of the games and a big thanks goes out to all the players that decided to participate in the tournament. I trust that all of you had a great time! Also have to give a shout out to the map creators that put the effort into bringing the classic sc1 maps to sc2.
Next tournament is in the planning stages as I type this. Bigger and better. Even though it's going to be hard to top the better part of things, as this tournament was great. More information should be released on it in the next week or two, and is planned to run over the course of the second phase of the beta. Stay tuned!
On June 09 2010 18:11 hellsan631 wrote: yea, i would like to see the vods.
also, a mention of the fact that rai and possibly kyle both cheating during some of there games.
Heh. I'm Kyle, and I certainly wasnt getting information from the stream. If you have a specific part of a game in mind where I do something fishy, i'd be happy to watch the replay and see if I can explain it or point out why I did something. I really don't want accusations of cheating to smudge my winning. I worked very hard to win the games and I absolutely did not cheat. Not sure how I can prove it to you.
With that said though, it was painfully obvious that my opponent in the finals was getting information from the stream. He scouted at 12-13 food on every match until the match I 7 pooled, in which he sent the scout around the same time it would've been clear on the stream that I was doing so. I've been waiting for the VODs to see if that's the case. That's certainly not definite proof, but I'm pretty sure the mistell he had in the fifth game is enough to prove it. Seeing as how I beat him anyway, I figured it wasn't worth taking away from an otherwise awesome tournament by starting a poopstorm.
But again, I certainly did not use the stream to cheat in any way whatsoever. Even the slightest accusation of that is quite upsetting to me because I worked my ass off playing those games. My forearms ached by the end of it and I was getting up between games to wipe my head down with a cold cloth. I had no expectations of winning when i started in the ro32 and doing so has been one of the most satisfying things I've done as a gamer. I earned my wins. If you're going to discredit my hard work with accusations like that, please at least provide some reasoning behind it, don't just throw my name in there.

No, don't think so. I was present in all of the games and remember them pretty well (they were pretty epic). What stands out is that both players were sticking to their respective openings game 1-3. By game 3, the players started to anticipate one another and play accordingly since they realized they keep seeing similar play style. Mirror matches are so easily predictable, seriously come on...

You picked incineration zone, 6-10 pool is very popular in that map. Heck, the commentators predicted one of you were likely to going 6 pool going into the game.

You kind of passed over the other half of that paragraph. I explicitly stated that wasn't proof enough, only an odd deviation in his usual play. He made no attempt to scout early on steppes.
It's hard to articulate, but when you are playing someone you get a feel for them. When i saw that early drone in my base, it felt wrong. I only suspected he was getting info from the stream at that point.
But did you watch game 5? He mistelled into chat asking someone what I had shortly before pushing out and then went dead silent for the rest of the game. It wasn't some sort of joke where he was pretending to watch the stream. It was a legitimate mistype and everyone watching saw it. I don't know what more evidence you need.
Regardless, the tournament is over and it doesn't really matter. It all comes down to personal opinion. I take no pleasure in sticking my neck out and making accusations or trying to prove that he was cheating.

I didn't get far enough for it to matter but this should really be looked at
The Finals VOD have been released. Unfortunately game 1 wasn't recorded due to the issues that were had setting that first game up, but games 2-5 were. You can find them on the Ustream page.
Game 2: 04:10 Game 3: 24:10 Game 4: 32:45 Game 5: 46:10
We also had the chance to interview Kyle, after game 5, and it has been released in VOD form as well. He talks about his map choices, thoughts during the series, getting matched up ZvZ in every match of his trip through the tournament, and his thoughts on, " I didn't expect to get past the first round". You can find it here.
Note: At this time I have no real comment on the accusations of cheating, but to say that any person found to be cheating is banned from further Micro/Macro Tournaments.

Not likely as a VOD, but should have the tournament replays uploaded in their place, soon. I'll have them linked and categorized here by round and player(s).
Also a bit of news, by this weekend or early next week, we will be releasing news of the next tournament. REALLY exited for this next one guys; really going over the top this time. Should be a great way to celebrate things when the beta comes back up in a few weeks.
Video intros, custom brackets, more players, more post-game interviews, more VODS, new maps, more integration with the TL website and possibly a website of our own, new/more commentators, and just maybe, an awesome prize pool.
That was quite the badass trailer, it was also an excellent tournament too bad more people couldnt be there to watch the stream, it really did deserve more viewers. However 128 players just makes me giddy.

It's not entirely certain as blizzard hasn't announced a specific date for the second phase of beta. However with 128 players participating you should be able to find yourself a space to compete.
lol couldn't someone just smurf on a lower rated account? this is the problem with tournaments for only low lvl players. You see, if I wanted to join, I could just ask my brother to play on my account, and he would probably win because he is really good

Absolutely brilliant insight. I have never before witnessed such knowledge on the internet. Can I have your autograph?...
Already been answered and discussed in the thread, not to mention a billion other threads before this one, but thanks for stating the obvious again. The only people that smurf in tournaments, especially low/no prize pool tournaments, are assholes that just like to ruin the fun of others. Are you an asshole?
"It's not like you can even enforce the rule, since people will just lose placement matches on purpose and then smurf and smash the wow players."
"It's called honesty and integrity, some people still have it. I hope they show it by not signing up if all they plan to do is smurf. There is no money prize pool in this tournament and unless you consider smurfing to be fun (I consider it mean and dishonest in this case) you are just wasting your time."
Anyways though, I actually plan to open up the next tournament to any skill level. So this is really an old discussion already.
OFF-TOPIC EDIT: I am slowly adding the tournament replays to the OP. Should have the majority of them up by the end of the night.
EDIT2: Alright that is all of them (that I have). I know I was late getting them out there, but better late than never! Also if you have a copy of a replay that I do not have listed, please let me know via PM! I'll add it. For those that are too lazy to go back to the first page of this thread, here is the list of replays below. Click "Show Spoiler". Enjoy! It took me forever to format that list, the way you see it now, lol.
Sounds good BSOS, was some great commentary last time and looking forward to more of the same in a few weeks. Also about prodiG's map, going to have to get in touch with him about it. Does look like a interesting one.
Finally, new thread will be going up either late tomorrow (US Monday) or on Tuesday. Bigger, better, louder, etc. More players, new maps, no skill limit, and even some money on the line this time. As the trailer says, stay tuned...
its cool to have some of the new maps, the sc1 maps in a tourney, but they aren't balanced for sc2 nor are they a core set of maps that you have played on.
Also, more then just keeping them in the map pool, but making them exclusive will harm the tourney. You should allow players to chose any map from the current blizzard standard of maps that are held on the ladder from phase 1 of the beta.
Also, i think, because of the high profile nature of the tourney, commentary should be reconsidered. "The Cybernetic Punks" did a mediocre job at commentating @ the last 3 micro/macro tournaments. (sound levels were off, they were uninformative, and unprofessional. People randomly starting joining the channel and talking! and having 5 commentators doesn't help in the slightest). I have nothing against their style of commentary (it was decent in some parts, but over all it was lack luster). Camera work could have been a lot better as well. I ask that you try and get a decent stream/commentary for the tournament, in order to legitimize it.
Feedback has been noted, Hells. Even thought it was out of place to give feedback about some of those topics ( in regards to the new tournament) before relevant information has even been released about them. if you will notice, this thread is not being used anymore for any sort of news release and the new thread has nothing as of yet for our streams/commentators.

in reguards to bsos streaming.

This is relevant information.
Now, i noticed specific things haven't been mentioned in thread no. 2, but pulling the meaning from this points towards two facts.
Going to be more BSOS n friends Streaming.
Only User Made Maps in map pool.
both of which i gave feedback about.
Also, i would like to note, that Both Yiff and Kyle were invited back to play. For some reason, you seemed to skip over me... To say the least, i have put forth some effort to play and teach a lot of people, in all of these tournaments. I also won the first one (although did not play in the second). I did better in Yiff in the third, and i am still left out. (Even though my name(ID) was put in the "trailer" without my consent.)
Regardless, i still want to play. However, "[i would appreciate] a little professional courtesy" (John McClane) in regards to the tournament.
Also, to note, its really hard to convey tone while writing on the internet. I don't mean to sound rude or anything, i wanted to just state a few things.
Now i think its cool that you have a bunch of top end people. but i think your missing the entire point of the previous tournaments. It was so the low level players could compete in an environment where they would feel like they had a chance to rise above all others. It was a low ranking, lower skill tournament. Putting this aside, I am going to enjoy some of the games that come out of it. However, in the future, i would like to see the skill bar lowered again. (Perhaps do some sort of silver star coaching thing, much like gosu coaching did.

As the tournament host, I believe it is stewkers prerogative to decide what the 'entire point' of the tournament is. It doesn't say anywhere that he has to mimic previous tournaments for an eternity. Change can be a good thing.
WIth that said, however, I would also like to echo your concerns about the commentating. I mean no disrespect to the guys that commentated the previous tournament, but I'm not sure their style will match up well with the caliber of players that look to be present in the next tournament. I feel that games played by very experienced and professional players are best presented by experienced and professional commentators.
But again, it's all up to the tournament manager's discretion.
Couldn't agree more hells. Yes this thread is suppose to be dead, but since the new thread hasn't had a chance to settle down, I thought I'd post this here. I liked the old layout of the last tourney, and I assume that if I wanted that sort of atmosphere(lower level players battling it out for fun not money) then I'd have to join a group/clan or something, but at this stage and the way BNet has turned out its probably not going to happen in the near future.
It awesome that you got really top tier people to play in the new tourney, but leave us noobs something to feed on lol.
Maybe another set of tourneys ran by someone other than yourself, appointed by yourself of course. Just at the moment I think I'd get stomped on and not really learn anything other than.. Well how to get stomped on, and along with combining some of the other players that go along in this category with high tier players I think neither would have any sort of fun when one is vastly superior to the other.

Since M/M #2 is a higher profile tourney, commentating will be taken much more seriously by the CP staff.
We acknowledge all the mishaps too, and will have them corrected i guarantee it
