Well if you hold this, you can have a really strong counter attack if you did the double upgrade build with mutalisks.

But it a tought build to hold anyway...

Your engage must be clean, with banes focusing the hellbats and the lings attacking after, on the marauders. And then, shift click your queens on the medivacs.

Dont skip your lair tech AA. Eventualy, theyll gather up so many medivacs that zerglings wont do squat, and their drop potential will be so strong that when you get to hive, they have a superior macro lead. Even then, with so many medivacs, they may be able to transition into skyterran if theyre thorzain.
They don't want you to construct additional pylons

Mid/high master zerg. Since this patch I've been playing against zergs who take quick double upgrade and just mass lings off 2 bases while taking a third, while I'm going up to quick mutas. Their 1/1 destroys my 0/0 lings, and mutas don't kill them fast enough to prevent them from sniping stuff. I can't move out with my mutas because he'd just counter and destroy everything - and he has 45 damage spores at home which means I can't engage without losing at least 2 mutas to every single spore. This means he can safely get up to 3 bases while teching to whatever he wants.

What should I do to counter this? In one game, I scouted the evos going down, and after being owned the game before vs some other zerg I quickly threw 2 evos down myself, and got 1/1 - but he hit before my upgrades were done and I died anyway.

Another question:

vs bio-mine I put down my infestation pit and spire at the same time, get 10 mutas, and then go fast ultras. This works quite well, because I have ultras out before his widow mines overwhelm me.

I tried to do this vs MMM+Hellbat, and I got crushed before ultras where out. vs MMMH, do I need to invest less in tech and more in pure ling/bling to crush his push, and then go up to ultras? I could upload a game in which I lost if it would help.

I haven't read through the entire thread, and this has probably already been answered, but with HotS changing so fast, there may be new info on this:

I'm low/mid masters, trying to practice a super-standard macro ZvT style:

  • Muta/ling/bane mid-game; heavy focus on zerglings, only enough mutas to deal with drops, I usually don't get any air upgrades
  • fast melee/carapace upgrades, ideally fast enough to keep up with terran's infantry upgrades
  • Usually transition to ultras when I'm on 4+ bases and my 3-3 upgrades have started
  • Late-game army is max upgraded cracklings and 5-6 ultras, with banelings and infestors as gas will allow
  • Once I get 3 saturated bases, I usually make an extra spine at my 2nd and 3rd bases (so 2 total) just for extra help in defending drops
  • early-game harassment and drops is dealt with combination of spine/spore/queen/zergling as needed (trying to avoid roaches for this); I usually do a 4-queen opening for good creep spread


By far the strategy that I face the most, and have the most trouble with, is MMMM. How do I deal with mid-game and late-game muta/ling/bane vs MMMM? I'm having trouble engaging a terran army, I keep only killing most of the army, but then he floods in more Marines faster than I can re-make units and I eventually fall to massive army of 2-2 marines/medivacs/mines, despite keeping up in upgrades.

Some specific questions:

  • Many terrans go for reaper opening -> add 4-8 hellions -> take 3rd and play defensive when I do this style. I'm not sure how to pressure the 3rd when I go for this style. Is there any way to pressure the terran when I'm only on ling/bane tech? Or should I continue defensive droning and take a 4th? Or something else?
  • What's the best way to engage a large MMMM army when I have my muta/ling/bane army? I usually keep 2 overseers with my muta group, and then try to move in with a group of 3-6 overlords to soak up widow mine damage before sending in my army. The problem is if I don't kill the Terran army, then all the overlords die. What are some tips for engaging? Should I not be using overlords? Should I be making more overseers? Should I avoid engaging when I know he has burrowed mines near his army?


I've read the Blade guide on Zerg v Terran on Liquipedia, and the Zerg HotS thread, but saw little on how to directly engage a MMMM army using muta/ling/bane in the mid-game, and I'm interested to know what I'm doing wrong. I can provide some reps of this style if requested.

What on earth do you do to counter mass widow mines? I have a flock of at least 30 mutas and I'm going to snipe a terrans 3rd yet he has around 8 widow mines on his expo... ~200 gas evaporates my 3000+ gas muta flock instantly with no effort. What do I do?!?

Yeah my guide is missing the engaging a bio/mine army because it wasn't popular at the time when I wrote it. I did do a video on engaging bio/mine with muta/ling/bane located here:

This is a reason why mass muta is less common in ZvT now, widow mines deal with it so well. Try capping your mutas at 12-15 and using them defensively (I keep mine on my side of the map and use them to defend drops). Tech to hive faster and spend the rest of your gas on something more useful against mines, like ultras, infestors, and 3/3/adrenal. I've seen a much higher success rate against Terran this way.

don't fly into mines? you can see the black holes... just fly around and kill everything else o_o if a T is leaving that many mines at their expos like that that's great for Z...

I guess that only works for cloaking. I thought it helped mines too. Raising shaders from low to medium had a noticable effect though.

I faced a situation on a ZvT that I'm not yet sure how to deal with.

I open hatch, pool, gas and use my gas on ling speed and +1/+1 for my lings, then lair. I also make 3 queens for better creep spread. I think all that is pretty standard.

The terran made hellions and killed some creep tumors and then buried a mine on my 3rd location. With no creep down to my 3rd and lair not done yet, I had to wait too much to take my 3rd and ended up losing the game because he got ahead economically.

What should I do on this situation?
- take a much difficult to deffend 3rd? (btw, the map was daybreak, that would be difficult to hold)
- go for a 2/2 ling bane timing with a macro hatch on my main?

Without replay its hard to say. But you should be securing the third by the 6:10-6:30 game time. Therey no way he has mines AT your third after helions.
And if it actually happens you should already have creep there or 1-2 creep tumors maximum away. So no that big of a deal even tough id recommend macro hatch if this happens.

If that ever happens, a fancy trick is to build a hatch beside the mine, cancel it then make a spore crawler. Make sure you make the spore out of range of where you want to build your expo
A bit gimmicky and expensive, so consider other options first.
They don't want you to construct additional pylons

If that ever happens, a fancy trick is to build a hatch beside the mine, cancel it then make a spore crawler. Make sure you make the spore out of range of where you want to build your expo
