banelings are often used in the early stage to blow up larva in zvz. If you have the advantage, killing larva with a baneling will further it. (love the zergs that are helping you with a second hatch at their natural, while not mining there anyway) In other matchups you usually don't reach the larva before it is spend. But it is always good to do aoe attacks from the north, drones will flee over the larva and you can hit both. Works really cool with storm drops. Hellions are naturals when it comes to burning larva, it is really important to keep the larva count low, while you trade hellions on the way to the evil 200 supply mech army.
Some zergs impressed me recently in zvz that chased the drones with banelings over the larva and blew up even though they could have done it a bit earlier for more drone kills. (but busy microing the workers the opponent couldn't spend the 4 injection larva, that then went down, leaving no production alive). Or one that was camping the natural with a baneling.

My problem with attacking drones was addressed in the OP, in late game scenarios, sometimes players will just suck up their drone losses, use the extra supply they have (because of all the dead drones) to pump out more units and just try to overwhelm the opponent with two armies back to back and end the game that way.

I could actually see this working with warp prism archon drops.
Imagine the first internationally streamed pro zerg to have 8k 4k banked and only having like 6 larvae xDDD Zerg would be forced to push out Ultras just to get the most bang for their larvae buck!

And thats why you drop Ultras, to kill larva fast enough! All your larva are belong to CatZ.
