Zerg engagements: how to plan them?

What ways have people seen/done some scouting ahead of an army battle to make sure the engagement is smart and goes as smoothly as possible?

To be more specific, I find myself at a disadvantage when the other two races can scan to view your position, unit composition and plan when to make the best engagement possible. Protoss will simply get a thorough idea of what is going on through observer vision, but as zerg I am struggling to know for sure when to engage.

Sending a ling into the army to have a look is only mildy useful until the first seige tank/collosus shot, and changelings suffer from similar problems (especially vs protoss with observer escorts). How far back does the siege tank spread go? Are there spellcasters further back?

Is there any way to reliably check these things before a battle? Any help is greatly appreciated

If possible, could you provide more information?

What your describing sounds like you're deciding you want to attack someone, literally taking units, and sending them into the dark where you have no vision or scouting in one giant ball and just hoping there's stuff there and that it goes well.

Are you having trouble with knowing when to attack?
Vision?
Scouting?
Knowing what to make when you scout?
Knowing how to send your units in?

Creep spread. Overlords spread out. Holding towers. You don't need to know the exact placement of your opponents units, you just need to know where his ball is at, how spread out he is, if he's moving or if he's stationary. I'm assuming you're talking decently lategame situations, so I would think that sacrificing 1 or 2 overlords to keep track of your opponent is fine.

Try focusing mostly on creep spread, and hitting injects all through out the game. If you get your creep spread really far out, terran armies will be forced to start their push from further back. Give you more time to prepare and make your units later than you would have too, and helps you substantially in the engagement. And does essentially the same thing vs toss, forcing them to make more pylons further back and all that good stuff.

Try burrowing 1 or 2 lings at different areas on the map ( if you don't want to invest in banes ) say to yourself "After burrow finishes, I put one ling at each base he may take, and in ever area is army may go to push me, even having one at his rally location can give you tons of information about his tech switches and unit positioning."

Also changlings, they become more and more bothersome and difficult to keep up with for the opponent the later the game goes on, sooner or later you should have to morph 2-3 overseers late game to protect against DTs, so why not constantly plop changlings down to scout where his army is, when he's transitioning, and how many bases he ha!

I hope this helps! GL!

Solid posts above. Don't even have anything to add ^^ Lings are cheap put a few in spots of interest. Overlords you gotta make em anyway might aswell get some use out of them. Spread that creep it makes your army so much stronger anyway. Faster surround == more dps, higher movespeed is like having more hp since you can retreat fast and have more units survive. In alot of games opponents don't even go hunting for overlords and if they do get them to safety with olspeed they gotta get lucky to kill one or two. Ols can help you spread creep fast aswell. Make those lazy bags of goop work =)
