Hey all,
My last few PvZ games, guys with roaches would stutter step them right into me. Isn't this kinda like the equivalent of me blinking into an army? I was a little confused why this ended up in my losing the battle severely each time this happened. Is this the way you are supposed to use roaches?
So--- am I supposed to stutter step away from them? It makes it hard for me to blink micro when they are super close. I usually keep blinking backwards but I dont know how effective date is. Would a wall of zelaots help? Better sentry use? What must be done in these situations to get my edge back, and what is the primary reason ppl are doing this?

Hey,
You should really post up a replay if you want specific help. All I can provide is general advice.
Against Roaches, what you really need is overall good scouting. That means having an obs tracking their army, and so you can effectively prevent any sort of closing in from roaches with good forcefields. If roaches get close up to your army, their overall strength should crush any Stalkers without blink.

FF would be ideal, you should be cutting his army in half, then backing up so the roaches behind the ff cant attack. and yes stutter stepping back is good if he is stepping in, a well as blinking back.
|
zergs do that so more roaches can hit your stuff. because roaches have short range, moving them next to their targets allows the roaches at the back to attack rather than just runing around and waiting for the front row to die. also because of their short range, the roaches at the back dont actually take extra damage like stalkers would if u blinked them ontop of a group of marines as the roaches would be hit by the stalkers(range 6) and colossi (range 9) in a normal amove engagement anyway. the way to counter this is to not get caught off guard, engage smartly (like a spot where the roaches cant get a full concave) and to use forcefields properly so the backrow fo roaches are cutoff. if u only have blinkstalkers and colossi, stutter the colossi back a good distance then blink all your stalkers back and retreat as you cant fight mass roaches without sentrys. adding immortals into your army also helps alot.

The reason why people stutter step roaches is because roaches have a short range and a long attack cooldown. You want your roaches close so as many as possible can actually attack, and since you can't shoot during cooldown anyway, you can use that time to get them in range.

Roaches > stalkers in a straight up fight. The advantage stalkers have is their range and mobility + blink. The weakness of the roach is that they have short range so when a large group of roaches fights a large group of stalkers they cant all shoot because they are getting in each others way. However if they move in then they can all shoot and you will lose.
As others have said use FF to stop this and fight small groups of roaches at a time.
Replay would also help. Often you dont realise it but they just have more stuff.

Day[9] puti t best when asked wich unit he hates the most. He answered "The Roach" because if you lose to nothing but Roaches your opponent didn't use any cleverness, any sort of cool strategy but just outplayed you, having a ton more shit than you. So. If you lose to Roaches only, you lost before the fight, long before it.
Also losing to Raoches always made me sooo angry -.- now I think it's better since I get early Immortals, Roaches just don't do good vs Immortas
But, if you think it is important to improve upon. Stutterstep back, if he gets to close blink the first row, use forcefields to trap a part of the Roaches and hinder the rest from attacking you.

step away from roaches while blinking the low health ones even further

If you do not have forcefields and your opponent is going mass roach, don't try to risk an engagement with stalkers on creep If the roaches have speed upgrade, you're doomed. The speed of roaches on creep is ridiculous you will barely be able to micro back, not even with blink. Therefore I usually don't mass blink stalkers especially vs roaches. Go for a more mixed army, include sentries and immortals. Mass blink stalkers vs roaches is not really a good tradeoff. Zerg can make almost 2 Roaches for every 1 stalker you make, and a roach beats a stalker in a straight up fight. Blink stalkers work well if you can keep the low hp ones from dying, but if you can't micro them back enough when the roaches are pushing forward, it's totally not cost effective at all. Most of the time, a zerg will definitely have more roaches than your stalkers, without forcefields, you won't be able to fight him outnumbered.
