Also, if you are dividing your guide into several sections, use the spoiler tag to separate things of different topics.

a pretty safe build for a standart game, like reactor hellion expand against zerg A 1 rax expand into 3 rax plus double gas plus factory(s) into siege tank production works quite nicely ir you can hold off any agression, especially on a large map with tight choke into the natural. It will work on almost any map though, but something like Metalopolis.
Or any type of 1 rax addon/ no addon into cc and 2-3 rax preceeding double gas.
There's always 1-1-1 as well.

Or if you like mech, it's 1rax into CC into double gas + factories into tank+ reactor hellions (getting seige asap). This can be tougher to hold though against big seige/medivac elevator-style plays.

Do you have to be nr. 1 in your league to move up, or does a good winning streak with a good MMR do?
|
On February 16 2012 17:53 Gugg wrote: Do you have to be nr. 1 in your league to move up, or does a good winning streak with a good MMR do? MMR is basically all that matters. Your winning streak isn't that important, what is important is that you prove that you are able to maintain your MMR at that level. So if you win like 20 games in a row in bronze, the system may not promote you just yet because it isn't sure if you belong in silver, gold, or possibly higher.
Pay zero attention to league rank with regard to promotions.

Assuming PvZ, FFE opening by toss player and fast third response by zerg:
1. How many overlords would a zerg player have by 7 minutes? 2. (more importantly) what would be the main directions to which a zerg player sends his overlords in a 2 player map / 4 player map? 3. At what time would a normal overlord poke occur?
|
In a TvT, When you go 1-1-1 and if you scouted that your opponent is going Cloaked Banshees, should you get a Raven first or a Viking instead?
In a TvP, when going mech, what unit composition should you get? Should you get Hellions when you scout the toss having lots of Zealots? How do you handle a Zealot heavy army with Immortals during the 15 minute mark when you go Mech?

1. Probably gonna have to find a replay, I don't have one on hand. Zerg would have around 45-55 drones by that point, so around 8 overlords. It will vary immensely on whether he intends to get his gas earlier and roach at 55-60 drones or go the full 70 which is a little later, and a roaching player will have at least 3-4 more overlords (at 7 minutes).
2. Varies immensely. Rather than give an order, I'll just fire out the most important places. Overlord to the closest main or alternatively to the natural if the main isnt safe. Another overlord in position to sac OR within sight range of minerals at the natural to scout mining. An overlord near the third to spot third/creep block it. An overlord hovering over the building FE in the zerg's natural to spot bunkers/cannons. An overlord near the toss's fourth.
3. Between 6-7 minutes, varies by map and player preference.
edit: Grain of salt, a lot of these timings come from my head and they can all be readily obtained from a replay. DRG would be best, but no specific games of his come to mind.

1. Both are probably viable, but 99.9% of top Terrans I see grab the viking and save a scan.
2. Hellions in general are one of the only ways for Terran to punish a protoss with mech. Also they're a great mineral dump which you're gonna have a ton of. Mech compositions vary and it's just something I haven't seen since Diamond.

No. You keep the upgrades that are done researching. If a building is killed while it is in the middle of researching an upgrade, the upgrade does not finish and subsequently you don't have it. Once you already have an upgrade researched it does not go away.
I'd like to expand by saying that if you're researching +2 infantry on an engineering bay, and your armory dies, the research will still finish. What fighter meant is that if the building that is researching dies, the research does not complete.

Optionally if you're in bronze/silver yourself, just contact the people you've played and ask them.

Watch a ton of games and expand your knowledge. Be good at SC2 to take that knowledge and know how it fits into each passing meta game and why. All of the best analytical casters are minimum of masters, which begins the base of understanding high level decision making.

When HOTS comes out, do we have to buy it again, or will it just be like a huge patch? Assuming you only care about the multiplayer aspect of the game.
