zvt mech problem

Basically I felt as though I out macroed the guy I was against, and played fairly well, until he was able to continually attack with 3-4 thors with a small bio force. I kept on using magic boxed mutas and he held him back until I ran out of gas at which point I basically qq'd.

Was going mutas the wrong tech path and should I have gone roaches?

At 12 minutes, you have 2k worth of minerals and gas unspent, and he's been consistently less than 500 in each category. I do not think that you outmacro'd him.

Did you really need 4 spinecrawlers at the beginning there? I think the first two were great, but the second two weren't. Wouldn't you have rather had +1 attack on your lings? I think I definitely would. Only 25 more minerals and you could've had a baneling nest too! (I'm ignoring the gas, you had enough for both of those gas-wise since you only made lings).

At 15 minutes in your mutas popped. That's cool, except he blindly put about 5 turrets between his two mineral lines. Since they're so late at that point and he's already got plenty of marines and turrets, you're almost better off only using the original 5 to try to deny expansions. Maybe pick off supply depots if he leaves them undefended long enough. Perhaps an add-on or two. Once the thors are out it's time for you to get roaches. Magic-box works fine for 1-2 isolated thors. But with more thors and marine support you're just going to get your mutas chewed up.

Roaches against mech is the best. Then tech up to broodlords and gg mech.

Mutas are definetly not the way to go against mech. As soon as u see any considerable number of thors, stop mutas and throw down the roach warren and two evo chambers and start getting upgrades.
Roaches is the only unit that can be mass produced easily that doesnt absolutely die to bio/mech combos. You'll need banelings also based on the amount of bio he has.

People have to learn that outmacroing someone just doesn't mean having more bases and more workers. You need to keep up production, not just making new hatcheries/nexus/CCs.

I have a friend who'll take his 3rd and 4th but still have no tech lab on barracks or have more than 3 brax and 1 fac. Make another hatchery, and another 1-2 queens. Inject new hatch, and spam slings to waste some minerals if you must.

Muta abuse the slowness of the mech army. Try to catch units out of position. Mutas can brute down a thor or two alone, easily.

Once heavy mech is apparent, throw down dual evo chambers, and get to tier3 IMO. Make some broodlords to force vikings, and go roach roach roach heavy!!!
