I'm a zerg player but kinda like terran even though I don't play it on the ladder. After watching a few pro games etc are the following relative approximations to good builds vs what an opponent would be doing?
These would just be for like low to mid diamond or below and adjustments and perfect execution would be the top diamond. Obv there are some people who do it differently but I mean just in the grand scheme of things.
vs Zerg ling/bling to muta: Open hellion marine harrass and continue to thor marauder hellion or thor siege tank marine. Dropping hellions with medivacs and harrassing etc. Could do no thors if u get enough harrass maybe.
roaches to w/e: Earlier marauders and then siege tanks with maybe a bit of banshee harass.
vs Protoss pure gateway build: MMM with +1 dmg and conc, stim, shield upgrade timing push.
with colossi: Throw in a few vikings and prob go tank viking with a bit of MMM with stim and maybe +1 attack.
void ray/phoenix: Anti-air turrets and MMM with viking.
vs Terran viking tank: Either viking tank with more vikings or marauder heavy bio build with banshee viking I guess.
MMM: Tank marine build maybe with stim and +1 dmg. A few vikings for the medivacs.
p.s. the TvT is the one I'm the most iffy on.

I will Answer each question in Italics. These are MY OWN opinions based on my OWN experiences
vs Zerg ling/bling to muta: Open hellion marine harrass and continue to thor marauder hellion or thor siege tank marine. Dropping hellions with medivacs and harrassing etc. Could do no thors if u get enough harrass maybe.
Harassing is always good, you don't want to wait that long to start your harass, 5 marines and 1 hellion straight to their natural works decent. I like to put them in two control groups with the hellion leading the way and getting a few pop shots of on any zerglings that may be produced. With proper micro you should be able to kill enough lings to make it worth your while as the zerg will have to use larva to reproduce lings (which means no drones). I also like to do a 6 marine 1 hellion drop in the main. Its a nice timing and w/ the medivac you can elevator micro. For transition I don't like to get thors anymore, MAYBE ONE at most but most zergs will micro their mutas well enough that thors are ineffective. I prefer marine/ tank / maurader micro with some medivac support.
roaches to w/e: Earlier marauders and then siege tanks with maybe a bit of banshee harass.
In this case i still like to open up w/ harassment. If you notice its a 1 base roach bust then get a bunker or two but still harass. Then transition according to your scouting information
vs Protoss pure gateway build: MMM with +1 dmg and conc, stim, shield upgrade timing push.
I like to do a 2 rax Expand with one reactor one techlab. Chances are if the protoss is going 4 gate he will push you faster then you will get all those upgrades out (correct me if im wrong)
I like to do a 3 Marine/4 Maurader push to the natural to see if they are fast expanding. I may poke a marine up the ramp to see whats going on but chances are there will be a sentry. At this point its time to macro up, make sure you have a bunker or two at natural just in case a 4 gate proxy pylon push comes.
with colossi: Throw in a few vikings and prob go tank viking with a bit of MMM with stim and maybe +1 attack.
Against a colossi build you are deffinatly going to need vikings but dont over commit, after the colossi are gone vikings are useless . I also find that against a colossi build is that you can do a medivac drop with proper scouting. When i drop i like to scan where their main army is to see if he pulls his whole army over to defend the drop, if so there is a nice window to bring your main army in and do some damage at their natural (im assuming they have a natural based on the time a colossi usually pops out.) IN the BIG fight make sure to have several control groups, microing your vikings to focus fire on the Colossi, while spreading out your marines and mauraders in a bigger area. A MMM BALL gets toasted by colossi build, so positioning is important.
void ray/phoenix: Anti-air turrets and MMM with viking.
If they go void rays you will usually see them with a 2/3 gate push as support. This fight just takes alot of micro. That why i always open up w/ a tech lab/ reactor build. If you only have two rax you better hope you have some marines This is becoming more popular and can go either way depending on position. The void ray is one of the main reasons i dont wall in against protoss, as the buildings make it hard to defend.
vs Terran viking tank: Either viking tank with more vikings or marauder heavy bio build with banshee viking I guess.
Tanks are usually a must, if you fall behind early in the viking count i like to just go heavy marine/maurader. In order to get enough tanks out you are going to need to use some of your barracks on marines. A HIGH tech lab based rax build is going to leave you low on gas even on two base.
MMM: Tank marine build maybe with stim and +1 dmg. A few vikings for the medivacs.
This used to be OKAY but against any tank build supported by some marines i suspect you are going to lose in a heads up fight. You will have to do some tricky stuff like drops and making sure you dont fight against the tanks seiged, make the enemy move out of position w/ drops.
A good example of that is currently on Huskys youtube channel. Check out the game called "StarTaleBomber vs NEXON - TvT - Xel'Naga Caverns"
+ Show Spoiler +In this game Nexon does a heavy MMM build and startale does a more standard tank build but gets caught out of position ans nexon does an elevator drop on StarTales main
Disclaimer - I do not proffess to know much about the game these are just my opinions based on my experience.

Ty for the post Perfect, exactly the stuff I was hoping for. U mention some really cool stuff and I'll be sure to try it out
|
This is my first post so go easy on me. =)
Only thing I would like to add to Perfect's post is that for Protoss I also open up with 2Rax FE but I get a ghost to go with my first push. My first push usually happens around the 9min mark with about 4 or 5 maurauders and about 11 or 12 marines with stim and shields and a ghost. I also save one scan for the ramp and emp the sentries if they're clumped together. At which point you've should have either come out on top or traded armies but you have an expansion. I then usually follow up with 3 more raxs and 2 port one with reactor and one with tech lab. I then pump MMM with banshee, vikings (if there are colossus), and ghosts for EMP.
Again I'm not the greatest but I find this to work well.
edit: Typed wrong word

Just to play devils advocate - If you notice a PSY storm build or even maybe immortals I wouldnt get Ghosts. The gas commitment with medivacs/upgrades/and mauraders is to difficult on two base. I would suggest not getting PSY storm unless you see immortals/templar builds.
Again this is just my opinion based on my experiences.

Terran is a fun race if you know how to play (ie not allin every game) TvZ BO: 1-1-1 banshee expand into 2base 3rax 1fact 1port marine tank medivac army Seige expand into 2base tank/mass marine. 2rax expand/allin/4OC TLO mech
TvP: search polt prime timing push or watch any bratK_ok tvp match ( he like teh 2-1-1 one base pushes) 2rax expand (get 2nd rax after OC) 1rax fe
All tvp builds usually go into Marine marauder mix with banshe raven or viking medivac support. Ghost can be added.
TvT 1-1-1 variants 1rax fe TLO did some mech builds Tank/viking/marine
|
I'm all about that Marine tank so: TvZ: Marine Marauder Tank (mostly marines and tanks)
TvT: Marine Marauder Tank (mostly marines and tanks)
TvP: Marine Marauder Tank (mostly marines and tanks)
OR
The 2 Thor push! into Marine Thor or Marine Marauder Tank
|
You don't have to viking tank in TvT. After intial 1-2 for drop or banshee harass, you can get by with constant pressure and marine tank tank pushes.
Upgrade attack on both. I'm 3 pts from 2700, with TvT being my strongest. I got a few reps if you want them, just posted em.
Marine tank + constant scan ahead and abuse cliffs and spots without tanks, drop hard and fast. Abandon things and hit an expo as they clean up their main.
I'd suggest 1-1-1 polt like push vs toss, and 1-1-1 reactor hellion -> expo, swap reactor marines to tank and try and push out hard and early with marine tank medic BEFORE huge muta ball =/

use marines. Trust me im a 2200 Diamond Terran.
