Hey guys,
I find myself having lots of free time lately, and I spend that time of course playing the game we all love. However, I noticed that after an hour or two games I am getting too tired to play. I then swap my office chair for a comfortable lounge chair and spend the rest of the day watching streams or replays. However, I am really frustrated that my mind can't play more than 3-5 games in a row without quitting. How do you go about that? Staying "fit"?
I for one found out that going out of the house into the cold fall air for an hour does wonders. Unfortunately, I live right in the center of the city so I have to drive a bit to get somewhere quiet with clean air.
Lets share and discuss!

I normally just go out and smoke a cigarette and that does the trick, but I think that's more about fresh air and less about a bad habit
Going outside, laying down for a bit and watching TV, or going to hang out with friends for a bit all refresh me...no matter how burnt out I am, if I go do one of those things I always find myself wanting to get in a few more games within an hour or two.

i'm the exact same way, though playing sc2 for me is auctally a full time job. i spend more time watching vod's then auctally playing.
sometimes when i hit a bad loss my nerves get the best of me and i need a break. its better to take this break i feel than not playing at your best. usually i can fit about 3 hours in of playing and about 5-6 of watching vod's and replays a day.
usually i like to grab something to drink and a small snack after the playing sessions to keep myself alert. also taking a short break and coming on here or playing a quick flash game can help me keep myself on for longer periods of time.

10 push ups & 25 crunches in between games. I've done marathon gaming sessions and been sore as hell the next morning from all the working out.
|
When you get angry, just stop playing until you cool down.
|
Celial, Try interspersing your games with streams and replays, so instead of a bunch of games at once, you're playing one then watching a replay/stream - repeat. I do it and I can play for hours.
|
Are you physically in shape? You don't have to be ripped or able to run a marathon, but it does help endurance in almost everything to be in good shape. Hell, I"m no bodybuilder, I work out only about 4-6 hours a week, but it helps a ton with my energy level throughout the day. I can totally tell when I skip a few days.
If you don't take care of your mind and body (yes, sitting in the same position for hours is still using your body) then of course they will get tired faster. If your body is tired, your mind will get tired faster, and vica versa. Sleep, eating slightly better and even minimal (but regular) exercise will help a lot.
If you're a regular Ironman contestant or something similar than ignore everything I just typed
|
Hmm I can play for like 15 hours straight so im wondering if it has something to do with how long you been gaming for? Maybe you just need to PUSH your self and you will soon get used to it, either that or drink some brews!! ( coffee or tea!)

I like to smoke a cigarret each 2 games, but as someone above said i think its more about fresh air and thinking of what you did in those games

lol @ smoking to get fresh air

I played 90 games in a day when i got the game. Just play 4get the other crap
|
if u think: nah don't wonna play anymore, just press the search button and play. after doing that for a while u get used to play long sessions.
most fun solution is to stream your games, that also keeps u motivated for gaming
|
Exercise, watch streams /vods, watch some of you own replays.
One other thing--after a bitter loss (ex. I killed all his lings, then all his mutas all with harassment and macro and he still crushes me?), I'll take a look at replay and then focus on 1 thing for a couple games, such as apm with macro, micro of units, blind army macro, or expanding with pressure. I'll not try to win, just focus on the area for the whole fame.
|
everytime i try to focus on 1 thing and not play for a win, i end up trying to win the game.... happens to me everytime. -.-
|
I chew tobacco while I play. Helps with focus, and nerves at the same time.
|
I usually take a jog, play a UMS watch something on t.v., or cheese the crap out the next couple of people. also doing goofy strats in custom games is fun.
sometimes if your tired, lay down for a bit.
|
Just play depending on your mood. during the week ill probably only practice 1-3 hours a day, then maybe like once every week or two I'll crank out a 15 hour session.
It's a good thing to note if your practice isn't being productive then you should probably just stop. Making bad habits or not playing in the right mindset is sometimes better than not practicing at all.
Also I'll play aoe, war2, bw or war3 when I'm feeling drained of sc2.

x rated websites works well too

I find that keeping my hands warm is important to keep my apm up. I Always watch the replay right after i play a game, doesn't matter if i win or lose.
What I find most exhausting is thinking all the time: check minerals, check supply, build army, scout, check energy levels, scout, minerals, supply etc. My mind can't keep that up constantly, therefore to combat that mental fatigue it is best to take your mind completely off starcraft for like 30 minutes and let what you learned sink in, like doing homework, eat, brush my teeth, water the plants/cats, things like that. Then when i've completely forgotten i'll be like "oh yeah, Starcraft!" And I'm all psyched for it again.

Put some giant gloves on your hands so it feels like a handicap - you know since it makes it a hell of a lot harder to push the keys. Quite fun if u make it a challenge along with being extremely entertaining when you win a game doing this.

Haha I used to play Halo 2 when it was an MLG game and i used to have a barbell next to me and do curls, extensions and flys in between games and then when i switched to WoW Arena I would do the same thing in between matches. It keeps my going and its a decent work out.

I thought i was the only person that spent alot of time thinking about this lol, i find that i can only play in short sessions otherwise my gameplay suffers. ive gone up 200 points on the ladder in the last week by taking breaks between games going for walks def helps

not sure how applicable for your situation, but there is something you can do that makes you play every single minute of your free time:
get married, get 2 kids, work a full time job and relocate to NYC. it usually is around 10-11 when everyone is asleep and I can finally launch SC2 and play and I usually play until 2am without taking a single break.
|
When i get tired after playing 4-5 really good games where im remembering to do everything Starcraft is very mentally tiring. I either go lie down for a bit or play some 3v3 randoms and just mess around with an off race. For me its terran i'll just play a few rounds doing outrageous things like Thor rushing or going nukes only after a game or two i'll be good to go again

This will only work if you relocate to NYC though.

Relocating is not an option, I think :D
However, doing more sports seems a good idea, while I have an subscription to a gym I rarely use it anymore. I used to go with a good friend who recently got his third child. And it's really not that much fun to go alone, before that we were going 3-4 times a week for about 2 hours (cardio and strength).
And hehe, regarding the smoking to get fresh air: I was a heavy smoker a couple months back, but managed to cut back to smoking just every couple days. My last cigarette has been on Saturday :D

Punish yourself! Whether is penalize yourself by doing x push ups and/or sit ups. Or, run around the block x times. Do whatever it is that physical, because you don't want to use your brain anymore, let it rest.

EAT A BANANA***
Playing sc2 can be quite energy consuming; simply stay well fed, and yeah even excercise (NOT with starcraft haha) for your OTHER parts of the body (starcraft only excercizes your hands, heart, and brain xD), will help you have more energy every day. Anything like jogging for a bit each day can help a lot, as it makes your heart stronger.
***Protip: When you're tired, or get that feel that feels as if you're sick, perhaps even slightly dizzy, cold, depressed, etc... EAT A BANANA! No joke. It simply means that your brain/body is low on sugar/energy, and a banana is an easy way to quickly resupply yourself with energy (sugar/energy will start kicking in in about 10 minutes). Also another fun fact is that this is recommended by the Princeton Review books, like for the SAT. They even have a little section giving you the best strategies that will lead to your ability to eat a banana, getting by possible problems such as if the proctor doesn't want to see food in the room.
Wow, isn't it wonderful how useful a cheap banana can be compared to a Stim -- i mean, steroid or other drug?

I drink some water and open the window for a minute to get some fresh air in.
But other than that, alot is about being used to playing for a long time and keeping your focus. Having a good attitude (not getting pissed about losing a game etc.) also helps alot.
