Hi guys, I need some help with strategies in 3v3 while using Terran. I'm currently in platinum for 3v3 random, but I simply feel as if I should not be there because lately I have been losing most of my games. I start out well I believe, and makes marines/thors, yet I have been losing. However, in all these games I have lost, i have been in the top 2 on the score screen. Here is a replay from a recent game I played, but which I lost. I have no idea why I have lost, and therefore I am hoping some of you in this awesome starcraft 2 community can help me! IF you could please glance through the replay and tell me what I have done wrong and what I could do better, it would be greatly appreciated, and if you could give suggestions for strategies, that would be sweet! I'm determined to become a better player, and will implement any good advice!
Here's the replay: http://bit.ly/akJ9pp

Can anyone help??? Please?

3v3 is entirely about thinking of a coherent strategy as a group or assassinating players. the best way to do this as terran are nukes actually. if you get a squad of 10 ghosts or so, and alot of marines you can hold off attacks and as an ally attacks them you waltz in with the ghost and drop 5-6 nukes and try to eliminate a player or two. on the 3v3 map it's good to expand to the far expansions as terran and gain a dominate macro advantage. Also, in the 3v3 map drops (especially the ghosts drops i mentioned) are powerful. Vs alot of zerg mass vikings as they can eliminate overlord and they become stuck. vs alot of toss ghosts + banshees work well. also spotters and tanks dominate the 3v3 map.

I don't have time to watch a replay, perhaps you could ask some general questions?
Score means very little, by the way.
Anyway, what was your build order / overall strategy and midgame army composition? How well did it synergize with your allies?

Something that a lot of people can't quite seem to grasp is that you have to work with your teammates in team games. That's great if you played to your fullest and best and would have challenged White-ra if that were a 1v1, but if your teammates suck, guess what poncho, your team sucks.
Honestly, don't worry about 3v3 and 4v4, those are hardly ever competitive, let alone do they ever get past a cheese/rush fest.
|
At the beginning of every game, MAKE SURE that you and your allies communicate and have a plan. Even if your allies are not that good, if you can get your teammates to attack/respond together, your team will be much more effective.

I'd say that 3v3 and 4v4 are competitive in the right hands.
I've played alot of 4v4 in BW, and I've to say that I experienced quite alot of competitive situations and turn of events.
Now in SC2, what do you have? 1 map for 3v3 and 1 map for 4v4. Both of them are rather small, thus encouraging rushes. Also they just opened up the 3v3 and 4v4. I'm sure that when the game releases and we'll have a ton of maps to chose from, we'll be able to fully tap into the multiplayer experience at a competitive level.

Given no lag and a bunch of good maps, this can be fun and competitive. I played quite a few 4v4's in BW and the difference between that and 1v1 is you have to communicate a lot more. I am not good at communicating in RTS, so this holds the potential of highest gain in my case.
In terms of build and army, I would say if communication is bad, build a mobile army, as your allies may not make it there, but you need to try and help them/backstab/defend your own stuff. I would say ghosts/marines are good, with viking support against the big fliers.
If communication is good, you can try and specialize, for example one dude goes mostly medivac+tanks, another goes mostly antiair etc.

Watching you BM your opponents and even your own teammates disgusts me.
1. Your two partners are zerg on a map where expanding is much harder than any other map I've ever seen. Expect some cute onebase plays from them, and then expect to have to help them defend their vulnerable expos lategame.
2. You didn't need to waste time going extra rax. Your two teammates did the right thing by getting control of the game early with lings, so it was your responsibility to tech ASAP. Ideally you would have gone onerax with tech lab for marauders, and break down the rocks early for you and your partner to expo. All remaining gas goes to factory and starport units and upgrades for now.
3. Don't just break down your set of rocks. Break the other one too. Did you see how long it took his lings?
4. You went thor-heavy. Against a single zerg opponent, and a crippled terran, you didn't need more than one thor in each player's base. Spend more gas on siege tanks/mode.
5. You were directly across from the protoss. Logically, you should be scouting him slightly more, and building an army that counters his a bit better, since you'll be pushing each other more often than not. There were quite a few times where an EMP would have raped him.
6. You left the terran alone. Don't do that. Make some vikings and try to find where he flys off to and kill all his scvs every few minutes, if you can't finish him off outright. You'll force your opponent to split his army defending a helpless teammate.
7. Unless you're actively helping your teammate secure expansions(which you should be), don't just tell them to tech to whatever. They're doing their best with their one base.
8. You should be early teching to something that can hold off your opponents, and then massing up on that while your teammates start their tech. Because you never got to the point where you could pull your entire team out of the fire, they had to dedicate resources to their own defenses rather than droning/expanding/teching.
That's just specific points about this game and team play. There's also the usual macro better, scout better, occupy the watchtowers sort of advice, but those you probably already knew.

There are too many damn combinations of MU's to ask a simple "how do i play 3v3 as T"
What are your teammates? What are your opponents?
That's 3*3*3*3*3 = 243 different combinations.
Any XvX above a 1v1 is heavily reliant on teamwork and scouting.

Thanks for the advice guys, and if I was badmouthing anyone in the replay, it was just out of pure frustration, not really meant as personal attacks against anyone. My bad though! Anyway, my strategy is usually to go marines/tanks/thors, which has worked in numerous games, but not as of late. I will try that nuke strategy that PrinceXizor mentioned, I've seen a lot of Terran do it successfully in 3v3, but also I have seen some of them fail miserably. Any other suggestions to unit combinations/strategies/ways to help my teammates? I realize that once the game is officially released, this will become easier as more maps and more people get involved in 3v3 or 4v4, but I just want to become proficient in 3v3 before the beta runs out! Whats a good unit combination against stalkers/dts/immortals?

When dealing with any Protoss, Ghosts are usually pretty nice to have.
As Terran, you have some of the best units to hold positions. Tanks deal with ground, Vikings deal with armored air, Thors deal with light air, Hellions deal with light ground, and all three Raven skills are absurdly good for the cost. You would do really well just holding positions and defending for your team, and letting your teammates do all the harass without having to worry about their own base.
Alternatively, say you have another teammate who's doing the defending. You would probably want to go with a more proactive, mobile army. Bio is pretty good for hit and run harass, and so is four port banshee, if you think their anti-air is lacking.
