It's been a trend for a long time, but I've seen some people suggest that the 12-worker start was the nail in the coffin. With it, you just can't possibly make sure to get a scout off early enough to hold aggression in PvZ for example. | ||

This argument is one of my biggest pet peeves :/ In addition to what Zig said, there's a couple other things. There's plenty of compositions and common 'strategies' that are balanced around 2p rotationally symmetrical map layouts. The biggest example is to take a TvZ matchup on a rotational 4p map, say, Cactus Valley or Honorgrounds. Both of these 4p maps have a bit of a bulge in the main that reach out towards one of the other spawns. If a Terran player spawns on the bottom right of Cactus Valley, and Zerg in the bottom left, the matchup immediately favors the Terran player by map design, which isn't a good situation to have in a high-$ tournament like say Blizzcon. The reason it favors this player, is due to the large dropping angle that the Terran can abuse through the main. Zerg players also prefer to expand horizontally, as a triangular pattern means it's easy for a Warp Prism or Medivac to hop between it and the main in a short amount of time compared to the Zerg's longer distance to defend. Not only this, but the Terran is expanding towards the Zerg with the natural base, a natural rallying direction. This map has the exact same issue. | ||
