Do you remember Nexus Word Wars? The old top 1 most popular on Battle.net that got banned and disappeared forever? I just decided to play it today. I myself had forgotten how nice it was. After playing 8 games in a row with noobs, I just realized that no one never wrote a "Strategy guide" for NWW. Since I've played more than 200 games and won lots of "pro" games, I'll be the first
NEXUS WORD WARS - STRATEGY HINTS:
- When the game starts, look quickly at the score and try to force field the players with less score to keep them away from your team.
- Increase the speed of the arrow keys, learn the hotkeys, and forgot the mouse! The top ranking NWW players do not touch the mouse the whole game. Move around by using the keyboard arrows.
- Type "-close ranking" to close the ranking on the right and give you more visibility.
- If you have a problem of accidentaly buying stuff, set ctrl+1 on the pylon and ctrl+2 on the nexus and keep looking at the pylon. By looking at the pylon you can know the team income and avoid to buy upgrades by accident.
- Assign positions. Set a player to watch out the top, other player to watch out the bottom, and other player to watch out the front and Annoyling. All players should also watch out for the back and front in case of mass attacks.
- As soon as the fight starts, upgrade mineral income (hotkey M), always. Don't try zergling rush it does only work with really really noobs.
- Get gas income, just once. Twice in a late game. 3 times in a really late game. You won't need more than that. Gas is important for Nexus Repair in a late game because it costs a lot of gas and the only way to get gas is through the Annoyling.
- Kill first the units with big damage like Omegalisks. Then, kill the units closer to the Nexus.
- Stay alert for the items being spawn on the middle. As soon as you see a mineral item, spam zerglings to grab it as fast as you can before the other team grabs it. You should spam around 60 minerals of zerglings (hotkeys BLBLBLBLBLBL...). 60 minerals is enough to grab it, but make sure there's no enemies on the way to the item. If you have speed upgrade, you can spam 50 minerals of zerglings. If you have too much gas or there are enemies nearby, spam medics instead because they spam the periodic table (which is really hard to type) and they don't usually stop to attack enemies. And don't let the opponent get the life item if their team Nexus is damaged.
- In a full house game, the giant baneling (annoyling) will show up. If you got really slow typers in you team, let the annoyling explode in your team nexus right in the beggining of the game. That will keep the annoyling away for a good amount of time and it will only hurt the shield of the nexus (it will be recovered soon). If your team has better typers, upgrade speed to give to the team a slightly advantage over the annoyling.
- Keep getting minerals until you get max mineral income (+10). Don't build cannons unless the enemy units are already harming your team Nexus.
- If the opponent spawns a lot of units, don't get distracted! I've seen many teams losing because all the team players went to the front to type the mass units, and they forget the units attacking by behind. If you see mass units, don't get desperate. If is small units like mass lings, mass zealots, or mass marines, just wait for them to arrive and Psi Storm them! One Psi Storm costs 5 minerals and will kill all of them. If it's big units like Thors or Colossus, set a nuke to the middle of the map and build a machine gun to delay the units while the nuke is coming. If you don't have more nukes, wait the units to come closer and mass banelings. If you have enough minerals, you can counter-attack.
- For late games, you must have Warpgates. Warpgate is the most expensive upgrade. It costs 200 minerals and 20 gas, and you can have only 3 per game. But if you want to win a late game, you must have it because it spawns a Stalker and a Sentry for you periodically until the rest of the game. Once you have warpgates, get shield upgrade. Warpgates also protect the back of the Nexus.
- Once there are math coming already, get 4 cannons to protect all the corners. If the cannon is almost dying, upgrade it fast and use the shield spell, which will recover the cannon shield.
- Don't waste time thinking on the math with precision. 52 or 53? Don't think too much! Just type 50 51 52 53 54 55 and you will get it faster.
- Once the opponent has a lot of warpgates, one player should stay looking at the opponent's pylon and just typing the warping units as fast as he can while they are being warped. This is very efficient, but only when there are lots of units being warped (more than 6 warpgates). I've seen lots of really fast typers losing because of one player was doing that.
Please, help me improving this guide and leave a comment about your strategy. Thank you.
Shame you can't start the map against AI or something. Just wanted to look at the map and a general overview but it's not popular on EU so can't even see the map. (<45mins played)

Sorry for that, but there's no A.I. set to Nexus Word Wars. Try inviting people on several chat channels, it works very well.
This is easily my favorite custom map so I hope it rises back up the popularity list. If anyone ever needs someone for a game on NA, my character is Odor.791
Tips for team games:
The worst thing to do is have multiple players typing the same word because this limits the number of units that can be killed in that time frame. As Rodrigo already mentioned, it's a good idea to assign areas of the map to different players. Keeping that in mind...
If you've already cleared out your region and you notice that a teammate is having trouble with his/hers, help them out! Most players will be attempting to type the units with the longer words (omegalisk, annoyling, thor) or the units that are closer to the nexus so go after the units with shorter words or the units closer to the spawn points first. Your ally will feel less pressure as he types words like "batrachophagous" if there are less other units around.
Many slower typers and inexperienced players may not notice units with math problems because several of them have long range attacks and may be off screen (carrier, colossus). Those are also good targets for helping an ally.
General tips:
Set camera location hotkeys to the spawn points around the map including the enemy's nexus and warp-in pylon as well as your own nexus and warp-in pylon.
When things get hectic, medics are the lowest priority given that they don't attack and have somewhat difficult words.
Memorize words on units that are slow and/or far away from the nexus if you see there is a more immediate threat at another area of the map. Deal with the threat then type your memorized word.
I have been spamming the Teamliquid and Reddit channels for some games. Ran about 5-6 today, and intend on running more later on IT WILL BE RESURRECTED!
I am usually always down for some games, so if you're in the mood you can PM me at gagadisciple.741. I'll be running some more during my 10-game loss streaks on ladder (which is becoming a more frequent occurrence these days), too.
Has it been re-uploaded to NA? It would be awesome if it would make it's way back to SEA too, seeing as it was probably the most played UMS on SEA during its lifespan.
The "offensive" words were manually removed, and the map was reuploaded months ago. Unfortunately, it's been stuck in page 10+ custom map hell since then.
To find it, search for "Nexus Word Wars". You may find some players in the channel "debates" or in the thread dedicated to NWW players.
