I think it's mostly publicity. They want their name to be known more (IIRC, they already support e-sports in general?) in Europe etc. If you watch all the vods you can hear "Razer" so many times it's not funny lol. Basically this is going to get them more customers just for being the sponsor. Just look in the general section for a thread where people said they'll buy more razer gear etc.

Yeah i think it can pay out very well for razer. They are supporting esport everywhere and if they continue doing that, there is a high possibilty that gaming mice are direclty associated with razer, and thats what every company wants.
Like if you think of a soft drink you will probably think of coca cola, that kind of association is big.

publicity and rep mostly.

for instance, with players, i didnt know who the fuck BRAT was. but because he was one of few terrans to advance into the TSL, and for his play against strong players, he became recognized.

sponsors can capitalize on that the same way

I was going to buy a Logitech mouse. But after TSL i decided to buy a Razer. Many friends here in Bolivia already did. How's that for a reason to sponsor something?

For a lot of people- specially in the gaming industry- attitude matters a lot with sales. I know a lot of gamers who refuse to buy from certain stores, companies, or even entire genres because of one betrayal. Hell, I'm one of them. The reverse is also true. If you treat us good we will love you to death, buy all your products, talk about your unceasingly. Jerk us around and your dead to us. Razer gets their name out, and probably gains a large amount of loyal customers.
Can you dig it?

Razer = gaming related products
TSL = e-sports

It only makes sense.......... RTS players go through mice quickly

...

I think it would be safe to say whatever money they put in they got right back from sales and publicity alone. People have been talking about their stuff non-stop and it appears many people purchased equipment because of the TSL alone.

Some ballpark estimates:

$10,000 sponsorship.

$10 profit / mouse

Need extra 1000 mice sold to break even

Exposure to ~10,000 TSL viewers - an estimate for total online/offline viewers

Each viewer would need to be about 10% more likely to buy from Razer for them to break even. Given how little attention has been given to mousing in the RTS community so far, I'd say that's quite possible, especially gauging from the reaction here.

And that's ignoring repeat customers and the snowball effect through word-of-mouth (if I buy a Razer, then friends that I tell about it will also be more likely to). I have no idea how to estimate how big those are, but all-in-all I'm sure they'll turn a profit on this overall.

I think that everyone in TL recognizes the motivation of razer. So I think the normal advertising aim of 'implanting the brand into the subconscious association with products' would be amiss. But I think everyone in TL understands that razer had a big part to play in making the tournament such a big success, and as such we all feel like helping them out- not because we have been mindcontrolled into thinking razer are the only venders of such products.
"Oh no, we've drawn Judge Schneider" "Is that bad?" "Well, he's had it in for me ever since I kinda ran over his dog" "You did?" "Yeah...if you replace the word *kinda* with *repeatedly*...and the word *dog* with son"

In addition to what has been posted, this sponsorship also helps them build an association with Starcraft and RTSs in general as a reliable partner to the genre and the provider of reliable gaming accessories for it. Normally this would be more of an added bonus I think on the whole building customer loyalty thing and their general increase of sales. But in this case, SC2 is really just around the corner, and I think a lot of that credit they have earned will transfer when people who are coming back to the Starcraft world for SC2 decide its time for a new mouse. While 10K viewers is just a fraction of the likely SC2 audience, its still significant and hopefully can spread beyond the original viewers through recommendations, etc.

And just for good measure...

I think there have already been mentioned some very nice points as to why Razer sponsored the TSL.

Sponsoring should raise brand awareness. Ideally, you want to be "top of mind", i.e. the brand that is mentioned first, when thinking about a category or product. I hope it is fairly obvious as to why this is good.

Additionally, factors such as brand likability, image, purchase intent, value perception etc. can be positively affected by sponsoring (as you can experience first hand here in the forums!).
Thanks to the promotional offer with the mouse pad, Razer can even directly find out if there has been a boost in sales resulting from their involvement, which is pretty neat. =)

Razor's benefits are the same as any other sponsorship setup. Although, since Razor has managed to get onboard with the TSL so early, they really do stand to gain not only money but prestige associated with Tl.net events like this if it really takes off in the future. Ie, TSL's for SC2 etc, Razor will always be remembered as the sponsor who got this ball rolling, alongside the efforts of the TSL crew. That's worth paying for.

Yeah. Before I would say my next mouse would be another Logitech Mini Optical, but with the pending release of the Salmosa which should be similar in size and feel and Razer's commitment to eSports I think they're more deserving of my gaming purchases.

To be honest, $13k is nothing to even a small company, it's 1/5th the pay of one employee for one year. Again, it's nothing for the amount of advertising they'd get, which is essentially less than 50c per unique IP advertised? of course that's worth it, they probably made a profit on sheer mouse sales, and that's not even what a company is aiming for, but rather repeat customers and name association.

If you think about it from a corporate perspective, $13k is really nothing at all when the average company is playing entry level employees $30-50k per year, and advertising on TV, radio, etc is exponentially more expensive. Imo $13k is a bargain for what they got.

I'm more impressed and happy that Razer trusts a group of volunteers enough to represent their brand name. $13k is not a big amount to them, but it could be very negative publicity wise if TSL failed horribly or if we did something dumb like swear a lot or steal the money, so the actual decision to let us sponsor was a lot bigger than the dollar amount.

Where'd the last $3k go? Operating/Server costs?

And I just realized that Razer has been trying to go international (Razer Europe online in less than a week. (supposedly) and cn.razer.com is already online) and Starcraft's a really good way to do it. Starcraft has one of the biggest international reaches of any game out there.

A lot more like Nike. Players want the same gear that their favorite pros use, so Razer gets the chance to associate themselves with the pros.

Actually i'm thinking about not picking up a razer mouse.

I prefer non-glitchy underpriced mice.

I'll probably go to the store today, pick up a logitech mini optical for $10, and rape some korean gosus.

on a related note, getting experience sponsoring a Starcraft ladder is a mean to be ahead when SC2 comes around, knowing what works and what not and how things can be done better.

is there any word on whether their sponsorship will carry into the seasons to come?
or was it a one time thing?

i think the sponsorship added the motivation and the level of professionalism to the tournament. it wasn't just a play-around, pat on the back and here's 10$ for winning kinda tourny.

I totally agree with the publicity/image impact that makes this "small" investment worth it, but i think there is an additional thing that makes it even "smaller" for them : it is related to the annual accounts of the firm (hope it's the english word for "bilan comptable").
In fact, when a company makes profits, it will have to pay taxes on those profits, so ideally, a company would like to make almost 0 profit and instead spend them in any kind of useful investment. And sponsoring is a viable investment.
So let's say the tax rate is like 40-50% (i don't know if it's realistic for Razer, but in Europe it's more or less this rate), and if Razer is a profitable company (i hope it is), it did not cost them 13k$ but 7-8k$ in the end.

But anyway, it's awesome that they did it, and i myself have a razer krait mouse which is awesome too. :-))

get the regular standard diamondback. its ideal for sc, it is sensitive enough if u want full blast, and it has no malfunctioning speed, meaning you can move your hand the fastest a human can move a hand sideways and it will keep up. however all other mouses have malfunctioning speeds at bad speeds. idk about the diamondback 3g if its malfunctioning speed is the same as is predecessor.

publicity and rep mostly.

for instance, with players, i didnt know who the fuck BRAT was. but because he was one of few terrans to advance into the TSL, and for his play against strong players, he became recognized.

sponsors can capitalize on that the same way

a bit funny though considering he has been known for years but it seems like alot of people didn't know about him. weird

it's good that we have sponsors like razer or other gaming releated company, they help to bring gaming to another level than the hardcore-only.

btw, i won't buy a razer mouse. they are technically excellent, but i don't like the shape of any of their mice. i prefer logitech =)

And I just realized that Razer has been trying to go international (Razer Europe online in less than a week. (supposedly) and cn.razer.com is already online) and Starcraft's a really good way to do it. Starcraft has one of the biggest international reaches of any game out there.

This is very true. I'm living in the UK at the moment and had no idea who Razer was or that they even existed before the TSL. My first though at seeing their website, though, was that it was a shame they didn't have a European distribution office and, at the same time, that the TSL would probably be an amazing opportunity for them to expand internationally. Seems they're one step ahead, though!

preceding the release of the most popular RTS game in history,
who better to try get promoting your product than the most hardcore, skilled and dedicated player base?

(which also happens to use english as a primary or alternative language).

sc players are a great asset in terms of marketing. Once we players realise this and show this to companies, i expect an increase of sponsorship in sc until sc2 release
