I'm also an avid chess club player. There is a lot of discussion whether Starcraft is like chess. To me it is like speed chess, chess with low time controls. There, it's also a frenzy of tactics, strategy and fast thinking.

I'm studying Cognitive Science, the study of the mind, from multiple disciplines. There is a lot of research there that shows that Starcraft 2 makes you more flexible cognitively (thinking-wise), improves multitasking, and keeps your brain fit in general.
So go play SC2! (=
