I believe in freedoms, including that of speech (don't quote me TL's 10 commandments please: I'm not talking about natural rights), so I am in favor of light moderation, as it were. Therefore I think that TL is slightly over-moderated, but for the most part the mods are reasonable men.

Off-topic, I always daydreamed that if I ever ran a forum (not going to happen) I would implement two versions of the site: moderated and unmoderated. The two versions would be exactly the same except for moderated posts/posts by banned users, which would appear only in the unmoderated versions. I suppose I would have to put some thought into how to deal with replies to posts by banned users, and so forth (the forums I was reading at that time were mostly threaded, which makes that bit of it easier).

Which version you saw as the default could be a setting in the user-profile or something. It might be an interesting social experiment to see what people did with that sort of option.

There always will be idiots and assholes but moderation shuts them up.

I think the moderation is where it should be. There are occasions where i think the moderation isnt enough, but the vast majority of the time it is great.

Slightly under-moderated, but it gives leeway for more epic lulz without crossing the line (because if they do, they are b&d)

Anyway, frankly speaking, I love teamliquid's moderation the best so far (besides sudden random closing of threads for which some are quite legit)

Slightly under-moderated, in my opinion. Sadly, as is typical for large communities, flame wars are not unheard of on TeamLiquid.

i voted moderately moderated because it sounded funny, but on reflection, that's what i would've voted anyway. there's basically zero posts 24 hours after they were posted that make me go "what the fuck was this guy thinking", they all end up in the closed section (which makes for some funny readings). on the other hand, there isn't really an iron fist on a lot of issues either that u might see on other forums like random photoshopping or post-an-image threads.

so yeah

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a person who thinks that these forums need more or less moderation.

Team Liquid has a great balance.

Moderately moderated. They weed out the bad trolls, flamers, idiots who don't contribute or who purposefully derail with no comic merit, etc, but some decisions are questionable imo. I can live with it.

Moderately moderated for sure. Any more and it wouldn't be TL, any less and it would be gosugamers.net!

Once upon a time, there was a poster named G0ldie_l0x, and she came across three forums. Looking in a thread on the first forum, it was too moderated, everyone was afraid to post anything for fear of being banned. Looking in the next forum, it was too undermoderated, the forum was effectively content-free. Then she came to the last forum, it was juuuuuuuuuuust right. She settled down and became active at Teamliquid.net.

TL follows "common sense" moderation

there wasn't an option for that in the poll but that's what i think

>> also lol at "moderately moderated" haha

>> and i also have always agreed with mani that the future of TL relies most on the average user setting a proper example for new posters

I get the feeling that sometimes if you post something that contradicts or just counter-argue with a mod you would get banned.

Like this case (I dunno if he got banned, but he certainly got flamed)

Game 1: Sim-city mistake, what the hell Jangbi, not even B teamers do this kind of mistakes, with lingrunby he killed 8 probes and the forge once again. Jangbi still was in that, til he decided is fun to send a ctrl group of units in lurkers sunkens spores lings and whatnot at Lux's natural
Game 2: What a letdown, Luxury opened very strong teching hive, having presence on the map, and when Jangbi moves out instead of denieing the next expo or flanking the mian army he sends 2 groups of cracklings to die for nothing..
Game 3 ling runby, you cant blame Jangbi, that was nice, but than with 7-8 lings he barely killed any probes. Ok, he done the dmg, but the best ZvP player should rape the probes with that many lings. Jangbi tought he's smart and gone 2 stargate, gg
Game 4 Nicely done really, this was beautiful, Luxury played it perfect, jangbi didnt but that's not Lux's fault

other than that, very nicely done, pity it's this late

It's pretty good. Sometimes I wish there were more moderation, but that only goes so far. It comes down to long-time posters setting a good example IMO. What annoys me most is not when newcomers show up and act like idiots, but rather when long-standing community members act like idiots in a detrimental way. (Funny, lighthearted flaming =/= constantly being abrasive and annoying.)

edit: Voted "very under-moderated" because my mouse is screwing up on this surface =P

Most of the TeamLiquid community are all good enough to keep discussion on topic relevant to its thread.

Things like [H] tags missing and failing to provide a replay gets the moderators attention fast, they are over bearing at lot of the time

IMO slightly under-moderated. Seems a little less stricter than when I joined... some useless threads get closed very fast, which is good, and others will stay there, open, ripe for our trolling pleasure.
But, thank you mods, I know you're doing all you can! I love you <3!

gg.net doesn't need as much moderation as this forum. Its a fact. TL moderates way more than gg.net. I'm happy with both tho. Got smth to do with the average age of the members I suppose.

I guess theres no W. T. Snacks here.

Moderating the 10 commandments?
If so, i would say this site is very well self moderated with a couple exceptions from new posters/ moody posters here and there.

i voted slightly over moderated. I love the site and i understand there has to be some order but some times i don't even feel comfortable posting in fear i might get banned or some thing. The internet is a weird thing when your reading words some body typed it is difficult to show emotion thru them. basicly what im sayin is people interpret differently how some body ment to say something. Slightly under-moderated. There's a fair amount of spam, name-calling and trash-talking, but overall it's quite civilized in comparison to a lot of forums on the internet. I frequent one other forum besides tl.net, and that one is much more heavily moderated, which has resulted in the threads and posters being a lot nicer and the quality of posts higher, but the users are older as well.
If the mods were a bit more keen on stating the rules when there's transgressions, I think more posters would behave.

I got banned for calling an ugly girl ugly. I don't see how that deserves a ban, maybe a warning but that's it imho.

You are of course entitled to your opinion and it's fine that you feel it's slightly over-moderated, but I don't understand your reasoning.

There is nothing to be afraid of. Personally I have been a member on a number of internet forums since I started using the web in 1998, some still exist and some don't. Several of them are (or were) more heavily moderated than TL and yet I have never been banned (or temp banned) anywhere.
Once I received a PM from Beyonder (a mod) commenting on a post of mine (which I believe I had even edited by the time I read the PM, not 100% sure on this though) years ago, before I became staff and a warning for calling out/flaming a (now ex-)mod on broodwar.de. Both of them were probably deserved (although I still think that guy is stupid -.-). That's the closest I have ever gotten to a forum ban in 11 years on the web.

I know this is may seem easy to say with the rather protected status of being a moderator, but my honest opinion is that it is actually pretty hard to get banned from TL (or any other forum I have visited for that matter), if one applies the slightest amount of common sense when posting.

I'm very happy with the TL.net moderation. Sometimes a bit too much flaming considering players skill but it feels like if it's less recently.

The moderation will be tested for real however once SC2 get released. The amount of new people flooding in will bring lots of retards and a lot more work. I hope TL will keep the ban hammer ready.

I don't have a problem with the level of moderation, if you like to run a tight ship around here that is ok.

What I do dislike is that it seems like if a post is something that staff members don't like or don't agree with(not necessarily against any rules) they take up an attitude and post something totally nasty in response. It just seems a little excessive and not setting a good example for the members. I feel it could be a much happier place overall.

well, slightly over-moderated to me, but only slightly

Since im a stater here on teamliquid (and noob on SC) i have some dumb questions even after reading the Recomended Threads and playing some games, but after some closed threads in strategy section i admit i have some fear to post there

Sometimes i wish to just ask, "hey i keep dying to 3 hatch hydra-lurker, why?" or "He did a 9 pool but crushed me with hydras, how can i defend this?" without doing a lenght post.
You know, is not that im lazy, sometimes you just want to ask a quick question and get a quick answer and thats all. And ocasionally the search function take you to some difficult to understand threads, especially to starters.

Perhaps a space in the site dedicated to quick question-quick answers, or a small box with a live chat can help (or even a noob questions section). This can be good since SC2 is coming, and i imagine a huge amount of noobs will come to try teamliquid (i can only sorry for the moderators when this happen , lot of work is coming ).

Besides all, this is the best moderated forum ive ever frequented and wish that dont change
(ok perhaps just a little bit more forgiving to respectful starters)

Someone in the thread wanted a comment from a frequent gg.net poster.

Well, I think tl.net is moderate. This is easily one of the best, if not the best, forum I've visited and I got my share of experience to back that statement up.

Based on the ideal of "This is our site, not yours, and you are here as a guest until you are here as a friend until you are hear as family" the moderation fits that idea perfectly imo.

Nobody's perfect and I'm sure tl.net admins fuck up once in a while too, but the moderation policies and the ideals of the site are fair. Don't behave like an idiot, think before you post and respect other users. Not saying the forum policies haven't lead to any problems, but you can never get perfect. You need to find a good balance. I think TL.net has it.

The reason why gg.net and other forums are behind TL.net is not because of moderation policies though. So please don't compare the sites solely on moderation ideals. But that is a completely different issue.

Of course, and we would never claim to be perfect.

The active moderators usually keep a pretty good track of who is banned by other moderators and not so clear bans or discussed pretty regularly.

I'm sure most people here know the banlist in the Closed Forum. The same list exists in the Men In Red Forum (aka staff forum). It actually existed in MiR before Meat put a copy of it in the Closed Forum. If I skip the posts in the MiR-banlist that were made before there was a public banlist in the Closed Forum, I count 236 pages for the staff only banlist and 154 pages for the public banlist, so there are some 80 pages made by mods and other staff in it.

Now of course some of these posts will be like "oh yeah that guy should've been banned a while ago", or "good riddance", or staff member who doesn't have moderator access will point out a user who could use a warning or ban, but I think this shows that we exercise a pretty healthy internal self-control regarding bans.

Yes. I'm aware of this and trying to fix it.

A good example is this thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=93291

My initial reaction was to close it, but after rereading it you can it asks a very specific question that could generate discussion.

Sometimes it's hard to draw the line that perfectly separates bad from good, so I'd ask that people just PM me if they feel I've made a wrong decision.

slightly over moderated, although not by too much. It mostly depends on who gets promoted, and who is doing the banning at the time.

also, @danieldrsa - In general, the recommended threads do a pretty good job. I think that this game is so hard for new people to get into that writing anything definitive is difficult about the game, especially if you want it to last longer than the current map pool.

Also depends on what way you look at it. A question might be perfectly viable from the user's perspective, ie he can't get the info as far as he knows in any other way. But it might still be a lower quality op than the average.

It's reasonable, from the user's perspective, to keep it open. However from the admin's and forum's perspective it's not a good idea as it will dilute the quality of the site.

I tried to solve that over at gg.net by creating a "Short Question Thread" in the strategic forum, which I believe had some good results.

And the opinions are always on the side of the players. I'm no lover of Kespa, but I'm still pointing out that it's not fair to them.

the rule says its up to the referee to make a decision

everyone is pissed off because the rule was stupid when it happened to Leta, but then it was changed to be less stupid, but the same thing happened in an equally stupid situation last night even though the rules have been changed

i mean this is just clarification for the thread, risingdragoon can't respond because i banned himfor calling someone a 'remedial kid' and basically saying stupid more than i've said stupid in this here post, but to a bunch of people. mind your manners man, come on

"and basically saying stupid more than i've said stupid in this here post"
In his twelve posts in that thread, he said stupid once. The last time I checked, 1 is less than 5. And, by the way, I fully agree with your ban because calling someone a "remedial kid" is like the equivalent of fucking someone's mother with a inverted vagina donkey dildo, jizzing all over his mother's forehead while dancing in circles singing Stacey's Mom by Fountains of Wayne, impregnating her, and returning four months later to FALCON PUNCH her uterus aborting the baby in the process. Damn that is harsh, he should be banned 4 life dude.

"Cry out the dumb" and calling someone a "crying baby" (in the first spoiler tag of my post) is a little hypocritical in light of your other post, don't you think?

You know how some people can't fucking drive and everyone knows that they shouldn't be on the road? And yet they still get driver's licenses and constantly piss off everyone who is unfortunate enough to be on the road with them? Well, the same goes for moderators with the privilege to ban users, because some clearly shouldn't be given the power to do it.

Nonetheless, I will vote slightly over-moderated rather than very over-moderated, because every mod - other than a certain one here - normally displays the capacity to moderate well. In fact, I think most of the mods here are doing an awesome job!

I think slightly under, but that is understandable because even with the 20 mods or whatever not everyone is always active and the ones who are have lives outside of TL ofc.

and PS ofc the poll will be biased towards overmoderated because we have the banned users and lurkers who are gonna vote on that out of spite.

I don't like the idea of banning people for creating stupid threads though I can see the reasoning behind it. People should sort what content is worth looking at and what isn't by themselves in my view. It does make the forum clean and tidy, but I just can't agree with this rule personally. Besides that, great job, moderators. I voted "slightly over-moderated".

Can I change my vote to very under-moderated?

Have a moderate day. - Chill

EDIT: In seriousness, sometimes I think under, and usually around then someone is modded and it's back to normal.
Their are four errors in this sentance.

I feel TL is slightly over-moderated compared to most sites online. The mods do an awesome job with keeping the good stuff open though.

this site is psycho over moderated.
but does that make it bad? i didnt say that

so ya i voted for very over moderated- but just maybe its necessary. sometimes i think the over attention given to trolls and the uber warnings given out make people wanna get attention. but who knows. i come here every day so its certainly not a terrible thing.

The reason why gg.net and other forums are behind TL.net is not because of moderation policies though. So please don't compare the sites solely on moderation ideals. But that is a completely different issue.

Very moderate imo, because the temp bans are very generous. On many forums , it is just ban. So there's really no excuse when people get perm banned.
Nothing witty here atm
