Our friends at SC:Legacy just released the most ridiculous fan project I've ever seen. LoA gave me a sneak peak about a week ago and it took everything in my power not to spam the link all over the internet.... I won't say any more. Just look at it for yourself.
Normally we post community releases "in the spotlight" but this is simply too good to miss.
- I didn't embed for a reason...appreciate the work on SC:L's site please.
The StarCraft Community, despite being mature, is on the brink of undergoing a major expansion. StarCraft: Legacy is poised to harness that new energy, that new influx of fresh blood, but at the same time we are at the forefront of leveraging both the resources and the varied talents that already exist within the community. And we hope we can still inspire some awe - deliver something that isn't normally produced or created for the community, by members of the community. For the past several months, there have been scheduled and unscheduled meetings, hundreds of emails, critiques, improvements, redesigns, and lots of laughter - because we've been doing what we enjoy the most - creating something for the community for no reason other than to produce something exclusive for you - our members, whether you've been with us the for the whole journey or if you just stumbled upon us today. With this high-quality fan-cinematic we have sought to bridge the gap between professionalism and the traditional fan-created fare, between the lore and our imaginations, and between our vision and reality.
Wow that was an awesome video. Reading the comments on the guy who created it was really interesting too. I wouldn't've guessed it took that much time to create 2:30 long video, but I guess when you have to start from scratch with custom creation it isn't an easy process.
Nice. I see they went with the game-faithful 8 interceptors per carrier. I always saw that as just a game restriction though and envisioned Protoss Carriers actually housing a proper fleet of them.

It took us months to make :p we loved making it and there are tenative plans for more - Thanks so much *bow*
Our gfx artist will really appreciate this.

Any chance of any more videos coming LoA? :D Not trying to be greedy! Since you have some characters already made would it be easier to make more videos?
Just saw this and..........Holy Crap, it was pretty awesome, Really Liked it Prop to the person that took the time and effort to make this. Really fucking awesome

We're exploring our options - more is a definite possibility but they take a long time to make. We're currently discussing our next choice of scene.

We gave our artist one.
On July 01 2009 12:55 StarBrift wrote: WAIT. This video was only a trailer? This is going to be like a fanmade movie?
More like a series if anything - we don't have the time or resources to make a full movie. This is supposed to compliment the holes in the original SC cinematics.
Wow, this is so impressive. Everything was amazing, I think it was almost Blizzard quality. It would be very cool to see more, but even this is enough by itself. Honestly, this is the best quality fan-made video I have ever seen.
On July 01 2009 13:04 scwizard wrote: Whoever worked on this will have an amazing resume holy shit.
Blizzard should hire these people.
Never mind, I just read about how they want to strike out on their own.
On July 01 2009 13:10 Ftrunkz wrote: WOW, you could pass that off as an official blizz cinimatic and i dont think anyone would argue it, lol. Amazingly well done, please make more! .
Btw - I'm too lazy to read through the whole interview and stuff, was that the actual voice actor of tassadar? Cos it sounded really spot on :|.
Well, it's much better quality than the original Starcraft cinematic. But to give Blizzard some credit, those were made ten years ago
Seriously though, if you compare the "hell it's about time" video, to this, there's very little difference in quality.
this is seriously the most amazing thing i've seen since i figured out the runes in the enigma set on my, accidentally. Soooo epic... they should make a feature length movie or something.
Awesome job, so many brilliant minds that are fans of SC. Did SCLegacy throw you a couple bones? They used to in the past for amazing contributions as such.
woaaaaaah that's really sick...everything was just soooooo WOW. i was hoping it would be much longer. i really duno how a carrier could take out 3 battle cruisers tho and what was that? a carrier laser beam??

I'm guessing the rendering took the most time?
That's correct.
Just to clarify - this is not a teaser. It is a total and complete project. It's meant to supplement and fill in the holes of the original SC cinematics. We haven't ruled out the possibility of doing more in the future but they'll likely cover holes and be semi-short!
Thanks to everyone that liked it - we're incredibly proud of it and your great comments will inspire us to continue to produce projects such as this. :D
I originally thought Kennigit being ironic. While watching, I started thinking to myself...hm, the intro text might be lame - well, it's actually quite ok. Rich sound, much depth, cool. The space panaroma, not bad at all, with movement, good effect. There comes a carrier, not bad, either...the distortion of drive - holy crap!
From there on I was speechless and nearly wet my pants when the Ganthritor blew up the first BC (and several times more).
I have seen numerous commercial cinematics that were, in comparison, well pretty noob.
Take that puny terrans, muhahahah. Protoss will clean the galaxy ! Very nice video, great quality and story. It could be little longer but its great non the less. gj
It is a good thing it so short because my eyes could not behold more of this awesomeness without being damaged. And I actually saw my HD TV have an orgasm.
Seriously, EVERYTHING is great, from beginning to end. The Yamato animation is awesome, the Recall looks gorgeous, the BC's explosions are brilliant, Tassadar looks badass as he should (and the blurring effect in his background looks ridiculously good), but what left me speechless was the quality and detail of the canyon's and smoke cloud's textures, with the image slightly shaking from the explosions. My only regret is that in the last scene, the Carriers' laser beams look cheap (at least compared to the rest of the video). Anyway, it is always good to see Terrans being owned by a great recall!
I hope there will be more vids to come. Congratulations and many thanks to everyone involved in this project !
Really great! Watched it twice. Just one minor thing...+ Show Spoiler +
[linguist]I wasn't crazy about the final voice-over. "All legends have a beginning, but a legacy lasts forever" is a jarring use of "but"--there's no contrast between having a beginning and lasting forever (especially in the case of legacies, which often do have beginnings), which is what licenses "but" instead of "and." Something like "Legends can die out, but a legacy lasts forever" would be better English, although possibly inaccurate.[/linguist] Aaaanyway, still an excellent video with incredible production values. You guys rock!
As someone who once studied 3d animation at university, this took a ridiculously long time to make. My only complaint is that it focuses on cool effects (which are done VERY VERY well), and doesn't have much in the way of characters. The difference between professional animation and good amateur animation is the stuff that sets pixar apart. Your characters need to have souls, and these two just kind of stood there. Of course, this takes a lot more time and skill to do right

Actually I know the original voice-actor but we were unable to secure him to do this. This is a different voice actor and our animator did an awesome job to match it to the original sound.

REALLY? WHY NO INTERVIEW?
Sadly, no. But keep watching SC:L if you're interested. I know the original voice actor, Michael Gough, and we will be doing an interview with him.

But the effects and models were great!
We were already months into the project and the Freespace our animator's specialty is inorganic stuff so we leveraged that to the fullest. We've tossed around the idea of doing a very special character driven scene that isn't shown in SC but we're not sure about it yet.
As always thanks to everyone for the great comments! We appreciate it!!! :D :D

I would drag my dick through a minefield riddled with broken glass just to hear him talk in the Tassadar voice in person.
Lol, while these guys are at it, they might as well nag Blizz for licensing. Both the fan creators and Blizz itself could get a crapload of money; benefits on both sides, right? .
Why the hell we dont have a StarCraft movie yet, when some fans are capable of doing such an amazing clip for free?
Come on Blizzard, it doesnt even have to be good in the script side, i just want to see some Terran and Protoss fleets giving it to each other and the Zerg owning stuff in the ground.
outstanding work fakkerdefak that was good imagin pixar or whoever, becoming intrested in making a starcraft movie that would be dope. and these sort of things just might trigger it, i BOW back!!

Need a little more character animation for movies, which, as LoA said, was played down in this video to focus on the animator's strengths.
Simply stunning. Blizzard should offer this lad a fat pay check to join their team,as this is the first CGI movie I've seen that compares or goes above and beyond the blizzard cut scenes. Excellent.
I realize the website is called starcraft legacy and everything... but the last line is fucking stupid.
"All legends have a beginning, but a legacy lasts forever"??? are you fucking serious? Do they even know what a legacy is? thats my only complaint about the movie.
the only definition they could POSSIBLY use would be: legacy: anything handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor: Eg. the legacy of ancient Rome.
but that doesn't even make sense in the context they are using it.
On July 02 2009 12:40 Abydos1 wrote: Very awesome but very anticlimactic, its all "omg the planets going to blow up" then just cuts to black :/
The planet doesn't blow up - the Protoss just purify the surface. Jeez lol guys no one knows the lore and hence you have all these complaints about imba and stuff... :p But this is really more via the lore side (like most cinematics) rather than the mp balance.
OMFG this was unbelievable. Watched it 7 times, linked it to friends that are not even into Starcraft. It got under 70.000 views on youtube, should be 700.000 in my opinion. I hope after SC2 conquer the world, hollywood would finally make that SC movie I want to watch. Mad respect to Freespace, SC Legacy, and TractorMedia
