Update 19/04/09: Week long delay One of the players did not show up at the arranged time to play the series. After waiting over an hour for this player to show up we made the decision to reschedule the match. In an effort to avoid drama this person will not be named, and the reason as to why they did not show up is not yet known. Obviously, seeing as this is a show match we can't simply hand out DQ wins so we went about setting up another time to play. Because kOs has Proleague commitments in the evening and F91 has commitments during the day, they will be unable to play out the series before the announced air time, hence the series has been delayed.
We apologize for this delay. The new air time for Liquibition is tentatively set for Saturday 25th at 2pm EST pending caster and player availability.
Update 17.04.09
Prize pool Thanks to the user jpavel, the Liquibition prize pool has been increased with the payout as follows; - $175 to the winner - $50 to the loser
Thanks jpavel for your donation to Liquibition! I'm sure the players will appreciate the extra prize up for grabs
After the conclusion of Liquibition #29, the Liquibition staff went out and celebrated a great season. We were on holiday, and it was good to take a breather before committing ourselves to further projects. Or so we thought. From the depths of the eSTRO dungeon came a request from kOs to be able to play in Liquibition. With this rare opportunity to connect with the Korean scene on the table, we agreed in an instant. The preparations for Liquibition #30 had begun!
Liquibition #30 - Encore will indeed be the last episode for this season, unless someone like BoxeR decides he wants to play.
F91 remains undefeated in Liquibition and has thus far amassed himself a small fortune off Liquibition. So far he has beaten IefNaij, Strelok and NonY in Liquibition - earning him a cool $300. In addition to that he also won the first Broodsport; which earned him $225. To date, he has earned $525 over the past 2 months. That's quite impressive compared to the top tournament prizes these days (~$700 for first prize). So
F91 should be very happy with the money that he's made so far.
However, he has another opportunity to test himself and make some money along the way. kOs represents a challenge on par with that of Gundam in 2004, and arguably an even greater challenge than IdrA. One of the best things about this series is that there should be no lag - meaning that these games should be of the highest quality.
F91 has proven himself already against the foreign Terrans; but can he take on the Koreans?
I should probably stop right now, and begin talking about kOs because I'm sure the majority of the newer users have no clue whatsoever about him. Back in the early days of Brood War there were two really major teams; Ideal Space (IS) and Hanbit Stars. Both had a host of great players; IS having BoxeR, NaDa, YellOw and IntoTheRainBOw while Hanbit had the likes of H.O.T-Forever, Sync, Kingdom and Reach. You can check out one of their confrontations here. At this time kOs was a member of the IS team.
In SKY2002 OSL Hanbit_Reach defeated IS_Boxer in one of the defining finals of the early days of Brood War. BoxeR's father blamed IS's lack of strong protoss players for BoxeR to practice against for his sons loss. It wasn't long until BoxeR left Ideal Space and started up his own Progaming team. After all, he had the charisma to do so. So he began the selection process for his new team. Amongst his first recruits were the likes of Zerglee, IntoTheRainBOw and iloveoov. Shortly after Kingdom left Hanbit and joined up, and then kOs left IS and joined up. The IS team went into turmoil, and the remaining members left and went to other teams (e.g. NaDa and YellOw to KTF iirc).
During his time on IS kOs was hailed as the next big Terran and one of the soundest mechanical Terrans in all of Korea. His raw mechanical power lead him to many successes in KPGA (now the MSL) and some great victories on the way. In early January 2003 he defeated JinNam to place third in the 4th KPGA league and narrowly missed out on making the semifinals in the KPGA masters held shortly after that. kOs was always known for his enormous potential in the game.
Then he got a girlfriend.
And so, kOs's career as a progamer was nipped in the bud. All his potential could not be converted to make him a great progamer. It wasn't long before kOs was shipped off to KOR where we lived out the rest of his days as a progamer. He eventually retired in 2005. But his days in Progaming were not over just yet; his talents could be put to use in other fields in the e-sports industry. He was recruited to be the assistant coach at eSTRO under Head Coach Daniel Lee aka superdanielman.
It was here kOs flourished and developed into the most feared Coach in the Korean scene. Why is that you wonder? It is because his depth of knowledge is beyond that of anyone else in the scene. He knows more about the game than the vast majority of the Progaming scene; and that makes him a deadly coaching weapon. After Daniel Lee left to run scforall in 2008, he assumed the Head Coach position of eSTRO and has turned the team into a strong bunch of up and coming gamers.
It may be weird that we are inviting a Coach to participate in Liquibition, but he still boasts A rank iCCup skill. He is a worthy adversary for
F91, and indeed will be
F91's biggest challenge yet.
The map pool for this series was decided by the staff working on Liquibition and game are as follows;
Some small notes: - Ideal Space became Plus which eventually became Lecaf OZ - Hanbit Stars became Woongjin Stars - KOR became OnGameNet Sparkyz (Hite Sparkyz) - You can find some sick Battle Reports about kOs's games in the KPGA here (vs Jinnam) and here (vs Reach) - There are some VODs of kOs smashing Coach Park (SKT1 Coach, former MBC) 2-0 on Youtube
aaaa thats really nice but i still think F91 will win.. he is able to beat some of best koreans so kos is like C progamer so i definetly think he will win again

There *was* plenty of vods of kOs lying about, however most have been deleted and not hosted online. (This was before the youtube age). He also has plenty of reps lying around. Most progamers did back in the day.. most had 100+
kOs was always pretty good, but honestly like AZ said I don't view him as a big threat right now unless he was practicing as much as the rest of the estro house.
With that said, kOs is like the Terran equivalent of a Backho in his own time.

Um, no, if we look at it without biases, f91 < B lvl progamer, one example of proof being amateur korean player (sumadream) 8-0'ing CHinese all star team which included F91 but surely he can takes games off of progamers, im not denying that
Anyhow, not sure how the liquibition will turn out, since kOs is a coach, not an active player, and ive been very impressed with f91's performance.
was that bo 1? so i can say that F91 can beat S progamer because he beated Nada and stork once.... i really think F91 will destroy him... i dont know if i remember corectly but in Nony korea movie wasnt there something like kos said to nony: Nony beat me or nony goes home?

Great writeup Plexa, you really pumped me up for this.
So glad Liquibition is back so fast, this is going to be a nice series. Even if I'm not sure kOs will win, I'm rooting for him because I don't really nice F91's style. Going to be interesting nonetheless.

back in 2002-03-04 every pro gamer had tons of replays online , some even uploaded them themselves.
k0s had a pretty famous game against yellow on lost temple and some other weird pro gaming map of the time. If I remember correctly he has been over 320 or 350 apm since way way back when.
it may seem like eSTRO is stocked with a GOM TV commentator and an old-skool progamer who was up there with boxer and the rest. but, remember that eSTRO still has no titles. yeah i'm thinking F91 is gonna beat kOs, even if he is a COACH, a KOREAN, and an OLD TIMER
so there is a scenario where TL pays $$$ to the coach of Estro (kOs, no less) for his play in an exhibition match? wow, i wanna hear what nagul has to say about this. this is quite extraordinary, to say the least.
Man, I'm a fan of Idra and Nony but I feel like a bigger fan of Kos just because he is representing Korea in this liquibition. I hope he dominates... Of course it's even more epic because F91 is already just so good...
On April 16 2009 05:57 Athos wrote: I expect kOs to play like members of Air Force ACE; he will display strong strategy, but I think his macro will fail him. :/
Actually, I was quite impressed by Reach`s macro when he played against End. So I think at least some ACE members have managed to adapt to the modern playstyle, which gives them much better chances in the future.
EDIT: Anyway, this is actually not that suprising. After F91 beat some of the strongest foreigner players, it seems like a logical step to introduce a Korean player into the mix. That said, I am not sure how kOs will fare. It entirely depends if he has managed to master the modern playstyle. If not, this should be an easy victory for F91.
Well that was unexpected. kOs? Seriously? Awesome. I was never a "fan" really, but his play was always pretty good and he should be an equal to F91 in the mindgame department. Really looking foward to this.
When I first checked the new Liquibet item, I thought 'F91 vs some no-name noob, F91 autovote'.. But after reading he's the head coach of Estro.. damn! What an epic series this is going to be!
Somehow I think of AranG coming back from nowhere some years ago, and just went ahead and raped SEn - whom imo was top 3 foreigner at that time. There are some differences though; AranGs PvZ was his best, ZvP was SEns weakest, while kOs' weakest was TvZ (naturally because it was mostly a bionic matchup at that time - and kOs was super-mechterran), and F91s ZvT is his best. I think F91 will win, but who knows, maybe he'll surprise us
Thanks to everyone involved with liquibitions, i only found out about them a month ago, have watched all since 24 now. Haven't got to watch one live yet, i'm getting up at 5am on sunday (Aussie) to check this one out. This is a fantastic site, great replays, forums etc..
The interesting thing to note is that kOs approached TeamLiquid to participate in Liquibition, not the other way around. I guess F91 is making a name for himself even among Korean players.

Yeah i was blown away by this too when plexa told me. It's going to be a really exciting match!
Western Foreigners? Kinda used up (well Mondragon but that's ZvZ and probabyl Draco if he really is back in shape). Eastern Foreigners? Kinda lack the *stardom* here to make it really exciting and would sort of *unroot* Liquibition completly. What else? Korean B-Teamers? (but this kinda has the same problem like the *Eastern* Foreigners).
props to TL. But, kOs should be able to put a better fight than some people here think. He's a coach, he sure would have something up his sleeve. Since he used to play long ago, he must have a strong foundation for his knowledge of BW. He's also a coach, he would be able to at least somewhat predict F91's play even if he plays unpredictably.
Playing unpredictably is one thing, playing suboptimal builds the other. As Chill pointed out in several of F91's games, that leads to undesired side effects, like stacking minerals or off timings. If there is one thing the koreans mastered, it is optimizing everything beyond recognition. So yes, I believe kOs will win this, although I am rooting for F91 as I'm a big zerg fan. On a sidenote: How about the "Liquibition will become korean" issue... Will the coach stick around to defend his title should he win?

Casters & Time Change Day[9] and Chill will be casting this event at the new time of Sunday 2pm EST (Sunday 8pm CET, Sunday 11am PST, Monday 3am KST). I hope this causes minimal inconvenience for you. The time change is because of all of our casters become busy on Saturday for some bizarre reason.

I'm not backing f91 because he is the favorite. Infact he is a huge huge underdog here. I am backing him because I think he plays on a high enough level to disrupt the playstyle and focus of any non-active progamer. Then again k0s was good in the days of 3 hat lurker style play and there is limited knowledge for f91 and he crew analyse from k0s.
All of you should be betting for k0s if you want to be correct. I'm 100% sure this will be a mech friendly series.
This is going to be the most awesome event on the internet ever! I cant wait! This is going to be so epic, hope the hype doesent kill me before i can watch it
to someone who would know better than me: how do lx and pj do against f91? doesn't at least one of them always place 1st or 2nd in every chinese tourney?

They usually win. Super too, I believe.
Although F91 is the best zerg in China now that Eva doesn't seem to play anymore, he's still not the best overall.

EVA retired. Pity too, he was like my favorite player =[
I think F91 has a winning record against Super, and definitely wins more stuff/places higher than Super in tournaments in general. Lx has a winning record against F91, and Pj's vZ isn't his best match-up (I think?) and is about even with F91, but still wins more than F91.
Chinese Starcraft is fun and all, but it's really depressing considering how it's been like these same people for the past few years =[
you forgot to mention in the newspost how kos destroyed and knocked out our very own Liquid`Nazgul of some tourney back when he was progamer in korea!!

That and how kOs helped nazgul practice before he beat XellOs
Excellent! Two of my three favorite casters!! Throw in Plexa and show us all 7 games and it'll feel just like Xmas! :p
Yeah honestly I'd rather push it back a week than make these guys play dead tired.
Don't worry about that, I think the players will play whenever they please (since their time zones are close anyways), and the live stream we'll be getting will be the comentators watching the replays for the first time. You still get the whole feel of a live match but I guess it just makes it easier to organize. I'll re-read the OP to make sure stuff isn't done differently this time 'round : )

that is just when we see it
if it's live it should be played at 2am or 3am which is unfortunate
Trying to establish a lagfree environment with five people spread all over the world is asking for trouble (hell, oftentimes it's not even perfect with just two people), which is why we gave up on doing live a year ago for high caliber matches (TSL, Liquibition). Only TLA is actually played live, simply due to the nature of things. This will be casted from replays, that should be pretty well known by now. It's still "live" in the sense that it is not prerecorded material, but the games are played beforehand.

Those who thought F91 should go/ should try to go play in Korea is really stupid. think about it: 1, f91 is about 25years old which is quite grandpa among those kor pros . 2, he live better ,earn better , have more fans in China, and family. 3, he play sc for fun not as a way of living. why should he go korea? for his sc dream? oh no i donot think so. It's just better for him in china..

He's probably earned more $ during his Liquibition career than most of the Korean professionals!
the only foreigners that estro wants are white people.
there is absolutely no point in recruiting a chinese player cuz there is no publicity gained at all from it. rather, it might anger the community because im pretty sure the native koreans arent to fond of the chinese...

I've been thinking about this for a while. Liquibition rewards are pretty damn good for these lesser progamers. Don't they usually only get living and food expenses, not even a decent salary?

Regardless of why - the match should be quite entertaining and actually I would miss the live yesterday so I'm kinda relieved though it's not good for others who were waiting for it, but we should see it eventually

Well, this should be a nice game. I am rooting for F91 and i think he can take the win. You could put some of them new maps into the game to see how will F91 do on them. Will you upload replays after the stream is finished? I am not sure if i will be able to watch it on saturday night, i am usually out drinking at that time.
F91 vs kOs -- This is going to be fantastic. I'm glad to see kOs compete and honored he is willing to participate in a foreign event. Looking forward to it.
I'm impressed lately by TeamLiquid's events... Great job! -CreeD
This is going to be my first time watching Liquibition live! It starts at 6am where I live. I knew there would be no way I could wake up at that time so I pulled an all nighter!
