Club Quarters
Round of 16 Conclusion
Round of 8 Week One Preview

The conclusion of the MSL Round of 16 had its dramatic moments, but ultimately it changed nothing, as every player who won the first game in week one went on to win the series. Before we get to the games, I'd like to add my thoughts to a few things outside the MSL:

1. CJay-Z: Encore
In case you haven't seen the CJ vs SKT1 Proleague match last week, go watch it. While Iris and Much both lost convincingly, Savior continued his hot streak with a win over Midas. Yes, it was the Zerg-favored Raid Assault, but MJY is 3-0 in PL and 5-0 since "The Destroyer Proclaimation". Savior winning was great, but I was actually way more excited by EffOrt's play. After steamrolling a generic SKT1 Zerg, EffOrt faced off in the ace match against Oov's golden boy and crushed Fantasy's "revolutionary" valkyrie build as if he was Mao ZeDong reincarnated. I can't wait to watch this kid more. If you want to watch more EffOrt, check out the first game of his GOM series with Hwasin.

P.S. remember when I wrote this last week?
If the [Fantasy vs GGPlay] OSL Semifinal was played over two weeks, I'm certain GGPlay would have won. GGPlay would have gone home after game two, pored over the new fantasy build with his coach and teammates, and practiced a counter for 12 hours a day until he had all the timings right
EffOrt's lings came out at the absolute perfect timing (obviously practiced). Silly Fantasy, you won't trick CJ twice with the same build. Especially since their Terrans are better than you at doing mech.

2. Voodoo Bird
Hey Stork fans, way to start a billion "Stork for triple crown!" threads before he even wins one title. Even Plexa titled his newspost "Coronation". Could you possibly jinx him more? I doubt it. Somewhere, the Brood War Gods are laughing at your foolish optimism. When Fantasy rolls over him, Samsung should try to get Silver to come out of retirement. (I know these Stork jokes are getting old. But it dawned on me that this may be the last week we can still make fun of him for it. As of now, I have decided to jinx Stork as much as possible).

Note: Plexa and I have a bet on who can write the longest newspost. Be warned. This is a LONG newspost. There were a lot of games to cover. You probably should get a drink before reading this.

Please Sir, You May Advance
(P)Kal 2-1 (T)Iris

Two young men stand in front of the door to the Ro8:
Kal: You may enter.
Iris: After you.
Kal: No no, after you.
Iris: I insist, after you.

Neither of these two played well, and only through sheer luck and the boneheadedness of his opponent did Kal manage to advance.

(Kal up 1-0 from last week)

Game Two @ Destination
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Despite the 2-Fac trend on Destination, Iris opted for a 1-fac expand. Kal did no significant damage with his reaver and settled in for a macro game. When Iris slowpushed to the center, Kal didn't have legspeed until after all his probes are dead at his third, even though the slowpush could be seen coming a mile away.

Kal proceeded to lose all his probes before getting legspeed:

After this happened, Kal inexplicably attack moved into a stantionary, well-mined tank line.

Even the Club Day logo in the top right knew not to attack, turning into a bright red STOP sign to warn Kal.

Next:
1. Iris kills an expo
2. Kal attack moves into a stationary T army
3. Players trade armies

Repeat these three steps three times and Kal runs out of expansions to lose and armies to trade.

Game Three @ Athena 2
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Iris thought to himself before the third and deciding game:

Okay this guy sucks. He can't stand up to me in a long macro game. He can't harass well, he made several bad attacks with bad unit composition and inferior positioning. Since I'm the better late game player, I should play safe and standard. That sounds easy enough. Easy win. Easy. Hmmm. Maybe a little TOO easy...

It's a two fac rush!

Kal easily repelled the rush with 1-gate range reaver (the safest possible P opening). Iris has turrets and mines around his base that stops the reaver harass, but his nat expo is late. Despite this, Iris' first push looked strong, until this happened:

Iris apparently forgot scanners and is forced to retreat all the way back to his natural. However, Kal refused to win, promptly suiciding two shuttles loaded with DTs and reavers into turrets in Iris' main.

Iris' second attempt at a push (this time with scanners) is considerably weaker relative to Kal's army size. In addition, Iris did not mine properly, so Kal's zealots and DTs ran right up to the tank cluster.

Kal cleaned up after Iris' final desperate push:

Kal advanced despite his best efforts to hand the games to Iris. I'm pessimistic about CJ's Proleague chances after seeing Iris play so terribly. What an ugly set of games.

Fake-Yellow! Type-B! ZvZ! Titty Sambo!
(Z)YellOw[ArnC] 2-1 (Z)type-b

These two, along with Leta, are the reasons why OGN is #2 in the Proleague rankings right now. It's unfortunate they had to play each other, as we could have seen some great ZvT if the brackets had aligned correctly. Instead, these two play for the right to turtle against Jangbi. MSL bracket maker, you are so cruel.

(Yarnc up 1-0 from last week)

Game Two @ Destination
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Type-b opened overpool into 1-hatch lair while Yarnc went 12-hatch. As a result, type-b's spire was halfway done before Yarnc even started his.

Many dead drones later, Yarnc gg'd.

Game Three @ Medusa
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
This time, Yarnc opened overpool into 1 hatch lair while type-b 12 pooled and placed his second hatch at his expo. After some skirmishes early, Yarnc pulled off the always deadly hide-your-lings-then-run-them-in maneuver:

This delayed mining at type-b's main just enough for Yarnc to gain a decisive air advantage.

Yarnc went to town on type-b's drones, did some slick anti-scourge micro, and advanced to the quarterfinals.

Legend Killer's Legend Killed
(P)free 2-1 (Z)Jaedong

The Jaedong for Bonjwa campaign is officially dead. He's still the best Zerg in world at the moment, but we can now safely say he will never become as dominant as MJY was in his prime (I don't care if his ELO peak is higher). I recognize that Free played well, but Jaedong was nowhere near his peak efficiency in these games. Perhaps the weight of his Proleague schedule is catching up to him? Who knows.

Here is what I wrote about free 12 months ago:
10-11. My Name is Danger
The big names do not want to face Free. On a bad day he beats himself, on a good day he beats anyone. Unfortunately he does not have the nerves or experience to go all the way.
This might be changing. Free even acted like a seasoned veteran by not over-celebrating after his win in game three. He seemed happy but not surprised that he just eliminated the best Zerg in the world. Let me say that again: Jaedong is out of the MSL. Somewhere, Stork opened a bottle of champagne and bought a trophy case.

(Free up 1-0 from last week)

Game Two @ Medusa
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Jaedong opened overpool speed, and spent an eternity trying to kill the first scouting probe to hide that he was going 1-hatch lurker. Really? You have the best ZvP with the best defiler control and the best large scale late game multitask, and ONE HATCH LURKER is the build you decided upon?? Mind boggling.

After scouting the pool-gas, Free built three cannons in addition to a gateway-forge-probe block, but the runby never came. Free scouted lurkers attempting a temple break and threw up cannons everywhere. Jaedong looked dead, just like he did against Stork during the ee-han-timing Katrina game. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

Game Three @ Athena 2
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
After watching game two I had no doubt Jaedong was going to win game three. However, I did not know that between games two and three, Jaedong contracted a case of Savior-itis, a disease that makes a Zerg player drop everything and rush hive. By turtling hard and playing passively, Jaedong succeeded in getting to hive, but allowed Free to take five gas. Jaedong amassed a very scary looking army:

A long time ago, I watched this nature documentary where the host was talking about how elephants were the kings of Africa because they have no natural predators. They just roamed around freely with no fear. It was one of the basic "rules" of the animal kingdom: elephants = autowin.

Usually, a control group of fully upgraded ultralisks are like elephants. They have no natural predators, so they can just run around the map attack-moving into anything they want. This was a basic "rule" of ZvP, if the Z got enough ultras, the P was dead.

Normal ZvP under the Elephant Rule
TurtleZerg: I attack you with 12 elephants.
AverageProtoss: I have no counter for elephants, good game sir.
TurtleZerg: Elephants are AWESOME.

It seemed like as Jaedong's guardians and drops kept failing, he convinced himself that if he only massed enough elephants, he'd be able to just ride them to victory. No matter how long it took or how much time he gave Free, the elephants would win. However, because Jaedong's first attacking units were guardians in the 14th minute of the game, it allowed Free to throw the normal rules of ZvP out the window.

Normal ZvP rules out the window
Jaedong: I attack you with 12 elephants.
Free: I build a time machine.
Jaedong: What?
Free: I travel back in time.
Jaedong: ??
Free: I counter with 40 tyrannosaurs.

What did we learn from this game? Tyrannosaurs have no natural predators.

+ Show Spoiler [True Lesson] +
Even if you are the best late game Z player on earth, its impossible to win if you let your semi-competent opponent macro for 15 minutes off 5 gas.

Become Who You Were Born to Be
(P)Bisu 2-0 (T)Hwasin

Bisu is Viggo from Lord of the Rings. He was this chosen heir who had all these cool abilities, but self-exiled himself before the final against Mind in GomTV4. Now, it seems like he's slowly remembering who he is and what he can do.

Game Two @ Medusa
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
A mark of a true "S-class" player is that they succeed when attempting seemingly stupid strategies that wouldn't work for anyone else. Bisu's elevator on Medusa logically should not have succeeded against Hwasin's 3 rax 1 fac build, but Bisu made it work with immaculate shuttle-reaver control.

Bisu got "surgical" with his reavers:

The reaction shots of Hwasin's face were priceless. He couldn't believe this was happening. Believe it, insurance guy. Bisu is back, and Mordor Samsung should be scared.

Macro Is The Easy Part
(P)JangBi 2-0 (T)Memory
(T)firebathero 2-0 (P)Tempest

Aide from a few notable exceptions (Best, Stork, fOrGG), PvT/TvP macro has equalized across most players. All starleague Ro16 calibre pros can churn out an impressive army at roughly the correct timings. You would expect that in their ten to twelve hours a day of practice, these professionals would know how to use their big shiny armies. Unfortunately, while these four players each displayed competent macro, two of them followed up with shockingly bad large army control and horrendous decision making.

Jangbi vs. Memory Game Two @ Athena 2
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
After a standard opening, Memory won the first fight rather convincingly, preserving his tank count and taking a third in the process.

Memory had a huge group of tanks, and seemed to be slightly in the lead. As he gathered his army to move out, Jangbi countered into his third, and Memory panicked. Instead of patiently retaking his third with a proper spread, he clustered his tanks in an attempt to quickly kill the P army. The battle ended in disaster, and Memory lost a large chunk of his tank count to a group of zealots:

The push threat was gone, and Jangbi was free to take bases and make carriers.

The CJ practice time really showed in Iris' and Memory's macro, but it seemed like they ignored proper push mechanics completely. You guys are supposed to be better than SKT1 at mech! Get it together.

FireBatHero vs. Tempest Game Two @ Athena 2
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
We can skip the mundane early part of this game. Both players fast expanded. FireBatHero made many units. Tempest made many units. FBH tried to do some dropship harass, and it was deflected with minimal damage.

FBH then moved out when Tempest had this army:

A smart Protoss would trade armies and take advantage of the better resupply rate of gateway units. Instead, Tempest danced around the map and slowly bled away his strength relative to FBH's growing push. It was painful to watch.

As FBH rolled over his bases with a giant ball of metal, Tempest could only muster a weak counter that was easily snuffed out.

These two matches were essentially given away. Memory and Tempest rolled over while the Samsung boys barely broke a sweat.

FireBatHero danced for a full three minutes before the VOD mercifully cut off. If we end up with a Stork-FBH final, I would honestly rather watch Warcraft III. Okay I didn't mean that. But I would consider boycotting the finals recap. Dear Brood War Gods, I'm not asking for a lot. Savior > FBH ProLeague finals ace match, and no all-Samsung finals. Thanks!

Brilliant and daring all-in move by Nada with perfect timing and execution. Aside from confirming that my Frozean curse worked, this game also showed why Nada is still very dangerous. Can you imagine if he won this MSL? The chances are very low that he goes through Free, Bisu/FBH and Stork, but his fans can dream on (at least for another week).

P.S. - The answer to the question is "not Frozean".

Stork Wins Five Golds!
(P)Stork 2-1 (T)fOrGG

I've seen the error of my ways. Stork is the best Protoss in the history of the game because he will simultaneously win the OSL, MSL, GOM, PL, and WCG all in one season. Stork should book his plane tickets to the StarCraft hall of fame, because there's no doubt this will happen. It's predestined. Preordained. Fated. Guaranteed. After his five wins, Stork will then ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after with his girlfriend. His children will be taught dance by FireBatHero and fashion by Frozean. His house will be cleaned by Bisu and Savior, who were forced to join a maid service to make ends meet.

What will definitely NOT happen is a loss to Fantasy in the OSL Finals and an endless spiral downwards into the worst slump of Stork's progaming career. I'd say good luck, but Stork doesn't need it because he's already won.

(Stork up 1-0 from last week)

Game Two @ Athena 2
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Stork was clearly focusing on the OSL Semis against Best, as evidenced by his near-loss in GOM. ForGG warned that Stork had better come prepared. Stork did not come prepared, but who needs preparation to when you've got the always reliable 14-nexus build in your arsenal.

Stork opened 14-nex, defended a bunker rush and almost broke fOrGG's natural:

Four minutes later, fOrGG rolled out with a huge army and crushed Stork.

I'm done trying to explain fOrGG's macro, so I'll just leave it at that.

Game Three @ Medusa
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
The final game of the MSL Ro16 was standard but quite intense. ForGG showed his trademark macro:

However, Stork came out on top by engaging at the right time, just as fOrGG was sieging and before any mines were laid:

Stork traded two rounds of zealots for many tanks, and retreated with his dragoon force largely intact. Arbiters, stasis, and reinforcements off five bases would follow:

ForGG ran out of macro miracles and a visibly tired Stork advanced to the Round of 8.

Still with me? There are two matches to preview before this marathon of a newspost is finally over. Lucky for us, we get the two boring matchups in week one: Stork-Kal and Jangbi-Yarnc.

Bracket by Hot_Bid

(P)Stork vs (P)Kal
+ Show Spoiler [Show Stats] +
Player / Matchup / Last 10 / Last 3 Months / Head-to-Head
(P)Stork / PvP / 7-3 / 12-4 / 1-3
(P)Kal / PvP / 5-5 / 2-3 / 3-1

Stork and Kal met in the Ro32 Group E. They played on Athena, and Stork had a huge advantage, only to squander it by losing a shuttle with two reavers in it. After thrasing BeSt in the OSL Semis, Stork's PvP is now unequivocably the best in the world. Even though he's 1-3 against Kal, I don't see Stork making the same kind of huge mistake he did in Group E, especially not multiple times over the course of a Bo5. This would be an easy 3-0 or 3-1 for Stork under normal circumstances, especially since Kal is on a 3-game PvP losing streak. But given the proximity of this match to the OSL Finals, Stork will likely be practicing PvT all week. If Stork wins that final (which he's guaranteed to win, no doubt about it), he'll want to celebrate. If by some ridiculous fluke Stork loses the OSL Final, the loss might demoralize him enough to impact this series. Even with those handicaps, Stork's PvP is still too strong. I predict Stork to win in a close one, 3-2.

HUK?? How great would it have been if Iris beat Kal? stork is 8-7 against Iris and has plenty of history. Instead, Terrans and Zergs are dropping like flies, and this MSL is staring at a PPPP semifinals.

(P)JangBi vs (Z)YellOw[ArnC]
+ Show Spoiler [Show Stats] +
Player / Matchup / Last 10 / Last 3 Months / Head-to-Head
(P)JangBi / PvZ / 9-1 / 6-1 / 5-1
(Z)YellOw[ArnC] / ZvP / 5-5 / 3-5 / 1-5

Yarnc's ZvP style is basically what Jaedong did against Free in games two and three of their series. Except Yarnc's all-ins don't work and his passive style never gets to 12 ultralisks. Yarnc is too aggressive when he's being aggressive and too passive when he's being passive. His ZvP is just straight up bad. Jangbi, on the other hand, is 9-1 in his last 10 PvZs, including FOUR wins over Yarnc. Here is a screenshot of their latest head-to-head, in Proleague on Medusa:

So, easy pick right? On paper, Jangbi should wipe the floor with Yarnc. A smart, logical person who is untainted by bias would predict a 3-0 Jangbi win without thinking twice. I, however, am not that person. I cannot explain or support why I think Yarnc will win, but there comes a time in a man's life when he must go with his instincts. I believe Yarnc's ZvP has a breakthrough in this series. Maybe something clicks when he plays Savior in Proleague tonight. Maybe Luxury sneaks into the booth and plays for him. Maybe I'm too excited about the possibility of Stork finally facing a Zerg opponent this MSL. I'm predicting Yarnc wins 3-2.

And if I'm wrong, I fully expect all of you to forget this prediction within three weeks.

HUK?? What's the record for number of sunkens built during one Bo5? I find it hilarious that Yarnc could build 0 sunkens over five games or 80 sunkens over five games, and I would not be surprised either way.

Next week, I'll recap these two quarterfinals and preview the much more exciting FBH-Bisu and Free-Nada matches. See you then!

Hehe, I remember that FBH victory dance, was kinda clumsy but still pretty fun and entertaining
I just LOVE the MSL opening with that track which I really can't remember. So impressive.

Awesome writeup! I am praying for FBH or NaDa to work their way into the finals against Stork. Stork doesnt have much competition on his side of the bracket unless Kal or Jangbi come up with something really good.

I know, seriously. I hope FBH dies in a hole in a convincing series and I hope the Nada-Free series goes to a full 5 games with the winner deserving his spot in the semi-final.

If Free wins, he could have had one of the hardest MSL roads in history: Jaedong, Nada, Bisu, Stork.

Instead of you and Plexa doing a length contest, a better metric would be the number of comments afterwords.

Nice write up Hot Bid.

Ok I learned a lesson today, you are either:

A. A schoolgirl (that banner is definately too pretty)

B. A voodoo shaman with great powers that hurls lightning with his hands

Whatever it may be I must say that something is definitive: Effort is just paving the way for Savior's return

I think we can place a bit of the blame of Jaedong's losses on the maps... Byzantium is a horrid map for Zerg, statistically 0-9 iirc? There was nothing Jaedong could do. The game on Medusa was a smart strategy by Jaedong. Next we had Athena, which can be a bit controversial - Jaedong could have stopped Free if he had taken more initiative early in the game, but instead he decided to turtle with 9999 sunks and 4 gas. Regardless, his strategy would have worked had the map not been Athena, where every base is a gas base (allowing Free to go mass archon/temp/reaver). The mass archon/temp/reaver is theoretically unbeatable yet is also impossible on most standard maps, but a 5+ gas Protoss can do this. Jaedong really had to deny those bases though instead of mass turtle T_T
