Introduction:
Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town by killing them off at night. Each day will reveal clues pointing to such individuals allowing the town to analyze them and point fingers all they want. Its much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking. As many people sign up as you want and the game is balanced between a group of mafia and a large town with a variety of roles.
This mafia game works slightly different than the normal one (read: Mafia), so I'll explain it a bit more. During the night mafia will collectively decide on and send in their hits to me, who they want dead (its a good idea to discuss them during day so you know ahead of time). Any player with a special role that can act during night must PM me their actions each and every night.
During the day you will see the bloody death of many of your friends with a handful of clues left behind. Clues can be taken from anywhere, so long as I see it relating to the person they are intended for. This means posts, names, sigs, profiles, blogs, things related to names, etc. Emphasis on their profile. Any player with a special role that can act during day must PM it to me so I can set it in motion. The whole town, including the mafia, will meet and discuss this turn of events and everyone will vote for who they want lynched that day.
The game is typically very active and there are usually numerous walls of text to wade through. If you are not a person who likes reading then I highly suggest you don't play the game because it is essential to being informed within the game. I will not compensate for ignorance.
Rules: (they are all subject to change before the start of the game!)
General game rules:
1. Once you are dead you may not post anything at all. People are getting irritated with dead people talking so sorry but dead people are now forbidden from talking during the game. People not playing are advised not to post in the thread also. Moderators please help out with this where you can, if players insist on continuing to post I'll just ban them from playing the game again. 2. Try to keep posting mafia game related, the thread gets hard to read and annoying when there are 12 posts of spam per 1 post of actual content. 3. You must vote. Whether its 'I abstain from voting' or not you must cast a vote. 4. Order of operations matters. Writeups in morning post may not happen in the same order people PM me them but actions will. For example, if a Vigilante kills off a Mafia which would lower their hit count for the night before the Mafia sends out their hits, they will lose that hit. Or if Mafia send out a hit against a Vigilante before the Vigilante sends in their hit then the Vigilante will die without doing anything. This applies only to roles that kill players, it does not affect roles like Paramedic. 5. Unless otherwise stated morning will last approximately 48 hours and night will last 24 hours.
Voting rules, since people always need it spelled out.
1. You must post your vote in this thread. Do not PM or IM it to me. 2. You must clearly declare your vote ie: 'I vote for X'. 3. You can not autochange your vote to the losing or winning bandwagon. 4. You cannot vote for yourself or anyone dead or outside the game. 5. In the event of a tie the person with the most votes first wins over the other person. 6. You may abstain, but must let me know: ie: 'I abstain from voting'.
Signups: Post here to signup I will not take signups through PM or IM. This thread exists for a reason please use it. If I miss or forget your name politely remind me, this thread gets overwhelming sometimes and I may miss something. Remember what clues are based off of: If you don't have much information on the site or relating to you for me to access then don't blame me if people easily find out who you are by my clues.
Signups will close on 3/15/09 and the game will start 3/16/09.

A special note on roles: All roles must be used at night and only the Detective clue check ability and Medic ability may be used on Day 1. Roles may be declared before night but they will not happen until night. Sheriff and Mayor will hide the roles of the elected players so that a Detective role check will show them as Sheriff/Mayor and nothing else.
Roles (you will randomly be given a role via PM once the game starts!)
The Town:
Towny - You are just a normal player. Your goal, with the special roles of the town, is to help bring the Mafia to justice. You get no special powers but the ability to vote during day.
Detective - You may ask if a specific clue points to a specific person or if a specific sentence is a clue and receive a yes or no answer. You may also, four times during the game, ask for the role of a specific player. You may not use both during one day and you may not use more than two role checks consecutively.
Paramedic - You have the ability to prevent one hit on a player of your choice during the night. You must notify me of the player you wish to choose anytime during the day. Each paramedic can only stop one hit and as such if the number of mafia is greater than the number of paramedics on a player then that player will die. You will know if you saved the person. The person will know if he was saved. And the town will know nothing of the event.
Vigilante - You may, only once during the game, kill a player of your choice during the night. A clue will be left behind just like a mafia killing pointing to you. If your hit overlaps with mafia or another vigilante then I will cancel it and they will kill the person instead. In both cases you will not know who caused your hit to be canceled and you will be able to use your hit anytime after that during the game.
Sheriff - You are the primary elected role of the game. You get to, four times during the game, incarcerate a player for one day. You must PM me if you want to incarcerate a player and it will happen the next day. The incarcerated player cannot vote, cannot use his role, and is immune to being lynched or targeted by hits from mafia or vigilante during the night. Once their day is up they are free again and cannot be incarcerated a second time. If mafia are incarcerated it may have the ability to lower their kill count that night.
Mayor - You are the secondary elected role of the game; the runner up to the election. You gain three extra votes for lynch voting. You also, once elected, get to choose the first player to get lynched. You cannot choose the Sheriff.
Bodyguard - Bodyguads are the protectors of the elected roles. As long as they remain alive the Sheriff and Mayor are both immune to all hits during the night. Bodyguards will not know who each other are, the elected roles will not know who they are, and they will be chosen from towny's after the Mayor chooses who to lynch. For all purposes the bodyguards gain no special abilities, they remain nothing but normal towny's and will role check to be normal towny's.
Double Lynch - Usable three times per game, the next day the town lynches two people instead of one. This means everyone gets two votes to distribute between two different people. The double lynch is elected by everyone. The vote must exceed half the number of players voting that day. IE: If there are 40 players voting then the town needs 21 votes to use a double lynch. Double lynches may be used everyday.
Miller - The miller is an outsider to the town. He is just like a regular towny except that when a Detective role checks him he will show up as being Mafia. He has no special abilities and will not know of his role.
The Mafia:
Mafia - Your goal is to eliminate everyone else in the town. Your ability, as a group, is killing off whomever you decide on at night and knowing the role of each other player in the mafia. You may not kill other mafia. Mafia killing power is decided after signups are closed and will be shown next to the mafia count in the player count lists.
Godfather - The Godfather has the ability to decide what role he will appear to be when a Detective role checks him. It must be any role but Bodyguard and must be chosen day one or he will default to towny role. After your role is chosen you may not change it after that, decisions are final for the whole game.
There are many roles not listed that may be used in future mafias, but for right now this is what we're working with.

Detective - You have two abilities. You may ask if a specific clue points to a specific person and receive a yes or no answer. Your second is to ask if a specific sentence is a clue and receive a yes or no answer. You may use one of each per day and you may use them every day.

edit: I got a question. Will you make it public that a player has been incarcerated or even name the player? Will this affect a mafia player as in mafia's KP goes down if a player is incarcerated?
